Top DO schools for research?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Many do schools have research but if its your top priority go MD.

MSU, OSU, OUCOM, VCOM (VT next door), TCOM, Rowan

The problem is rowan, TCOM, OUCOM, and OSU all have varying levels of in state bias. MSU has arguably one of the top research opportunities available (couple dudes there have like CURED several diseases). But they indirectly favor in state applicants by charging $80k for tuition for out of state students. However their DO/phd program is top notch I hear and that obviously takes care of tuition.

I assume KCUMB, PCOM, DMU..what are the other notables?
Those schools are not particularly strong in research. The stronger ones are the public institutions: Rowan, MSUCOM, OSUCOM (mainly for forensics) and TCOM. You can, however, do research in neighboring universities. PCOM has a strong relationship with University of the Sciences in Philadelphia, although the institution is not as prestigious. However, obtaining a position as a volunteer at UPenn, which is blocks away, is very attainable. Touro-CA has strong partnership with UC Berkeley and UCSF, but both universities require some driving (30 mins). WesternU has many basic science faculty members and many UC schools within driving distance. Marian has a strong relationship with University of Indiana that's next door.

Contrary to AlbinoHawk's stance that KCUMB isn't strong in research, amongst DO school's not affiliated with a public university like MSU, they are quite strong and only getting stronger. KCUMB has a new president and dean who are making some great changes.

In fact, there are Heme-Onc fellows at Children's Mercy who are actively working on KCUMB's campus on various bench research projects.

If you are going to a DO school, I would highly recommend attending one near major research institutions if research is something you're interested in.

Regardless of school, I suggest reaching out to major MD programs with PIs that you know are going to be publishing. It's not worth doing low-impact and potentially unpublishable research in medical school. Also, keep in mind that clinical research is easier to publish and doesn't tie you to a lab.
