Just a bit of humor to start off the New Year. Did I miss any? 😉

1) Should I retake my 38 MCAT?

2) Is DO just as good as MD?

3) Is it too late this year to apply?

4) How do I get a DO letter?

5) How many hours of shadowing/ECs do I need?

6) Does this (insert activity) count as clinical experience?

7) Can I take my pre-reqs at a CC?

8) Can I have kids and a career in medicine, too?

9) Should I apply DO/Caribbean/take a bridge?

10) How do I use the search function?

Anything asking about the best school, or listing a few schools and asking which one other people who you have never met think is best for you.

Is a DO a real doctor? I mean can they be surgeons?

Why can't docs who aren't good enough to pass their boards and get a residency work as pa's?

My family doesn't approve of my this, that and the other thing, what should I do...

SCREW YOUR FAMILY! That's what you should do.

1. I tried using the search function but couldn't find any results so I'm going to ask here - what's a DO and how is it different than MD? Can I be a surgeon?

2. I have a 1.7 GPA and a 1.5 science GPA (including 6 retakes), got a 9 on my MCAT .... I tried applying MD but now it's January and I've gotten no interviews, I just discovered osteopathic medicine and really like its philosophy - is it too late to apply DO?

3. I know DOs are physicians and are the same as MD, but my mom'
s best friend's uncle has a neighbor whose son works as a CNA at a local middle-of-nowhere hospital and he said that DOs can't be surgeons .... OMG!!! Is this true? Someone please tell me that isn't true. Please provide at least 50 examples to disprove what this person is saying.

4. I want to be a DO but my parents know someone from somewhere who without any research or direct knowledge of osteopathic medicine, said something bad about osteopathic medicine. How do I convince my parents that DOs are really doctors and not a janitorial assistant (or janitorial associate)

1. The school I go to isn't ranked in the top 10. Can I still get into medical school?

2. How do you even get rejected from a DO school? (no joke, I had someone ask me this)

3. What's this holistic approach that DO's speak of? Does that mean they prescribe vitamins and other
natural stuff instead of real medications?

4. I have a 2.3 GPA and 19 MCAT, can I get into an MD school? Oh, I refuse to go to the DO route since they aren't real doctors and can't do the things MD's can. What are my chances?

I know but, I have to convince my parents DOs are real doctors or else they won't pay for med school! I've never had to apply for financial aid before...OMG, you guys, how do I take out a loan and use FAFSA!?!? Can you get a loan if you don't have credit? PULLLEEEZZEE I need help! How am I going to be a heart surgeon if my parents don't pay for school and I can't figure out FAFSA!! OMGZ!

Perfect examples of people using SDN as a brace. There are financial aid offices for a reason!

"Idle hands are the devil's workshop."

i am in high school, how can i be a neurosurgeon and how much is the max i could make?

Definitely my current favorite ... I'm 17 and know I wan t to become a reconstructive surgeon etc etc.

I am a 6 guy. Will girls look at me as 10 if I get into medical school??

"I heard that DO's don't get to wear scrubs and only MD's do, Is this true? because that's the real reason I want to be a physician" LOL

I love this thread

As far as getting the DO letter. I never posted that question, but if you don't have connections that can seem nearly impossible (in fact i never managed it so I had to cancel my lecom interviews).

(Do these in order)
-Phone book.
-Look up practicing DOs in your area (or out of your area).
-Call office and ask to come shadow.
-Do this several times until you have a decent relationship with the Doc.
-Ask him/her for a letter to help you become a doctor too.
-Send a thank you letter after they write it for you.

Strangely I tried calling over 30 and they all said no. So i just went to interviews where i didn't need it. I got into the school i wanted most anyways.

I found two D.O. mentors that probably would have written me letters if I had spent more time with them through this website:

http://cf.osteopathic.org/iLearn/home.cfm

The I Learn Mentor Program website (as seen above) lists a bunch of D.O.'s who signed up to be bothered by us-pre-meds.

"Tell me more about foreign med schools. I'd rather go to the Caribbean than be a DO."

"I have this rash on my peep, Will I ever become a Doctor?"

i have a 3.3 GPA and a 25 MCAT and am not getting any DO interviews. I must be overqualified.
as I have a 3.2 GPA and a 25 mcat, I am taking offense to this. especially since I have not gotten any interviews and have been complete at schools since late august early september. However I acknowedge I am significantly undequalified despite my upward trend.

Im just playing with you though. just kind of irnoic you posted up stats that were close to mine

This has nothing to do with the stats. He was saying it was annoying for someone to claim they weren't getting interviews due to being "overqualified". Since you're not claiming to be overqualified, there's no reason to be offended.

I know I stated in the post I was just joking:laugh:

There's a similar phenomenon that I've experience in real life but never on sdn, which is that the person will also refuse to consider being a nurse practitioner or physician assistant.

This is especially laughable in Oregon (where I live) since NP's practice without a physician supervisor.

Anything vaguely related to Rocky Vista... I understand wanting info, but there is a search button.

Now all I can think about is a six year old coming on and saying "I have a 3.99 GPA and it's the end of my first semester of first grade, what are my chances of getting into derm and plastic????"

:claps:I applaud the framework of your post :claps:

me: "so why do u want to go into medicine?"
Other pre-med: "well both my parents are doctors"
me: "ok....and?"
them: "well i just knew i wanted to be since I was a sperm"

i HATE kids who have "wanted to be a doctor" since a young age.

Scientifically speaking, this is not possible nor does it make sense!!!

Also from a feminist perspective, some people could ask WHY NOT AN EGG?

Perhaps just the sperm half wanted to be a physician, the other half wanted to be a nurse.
