Obviously we should be ready to talk about our experiences, motivations, etc.

but what are some "outside" topics to get informed about?

all I can think of is affordable care act and HIPAA. I suppose some subsections of ethics might help too. Any other thoughts to add?

I got a question asking about strengths and weaknesses of our healthcare system.

1) Be able to discuss intelligently and defend your position on ethical issues. This isn't so much something you can prepare for as it is something that just requires logical thought.

2) Understand the BASICS of the healthcare system and how the healthcare systems works at a basic level. Read the Wikipedia article on the US healthcare system for a good primer. I would say that you're not expected to know much more than that.

3) I'd say it's worthwhile to understand the rest of the training process just so you don't seem completely clueless if it comes up. Most pre-meds are familiar with this, but some aren't.

Access to medical care in the US

Physician debt leading to a rush for well-paying specialties, leaving Primary Care undermanned.

Abortion

Euthanasia

Patient confidentiality vs right to know.

Influence of Big Pharma advertising directly to patients affecting the doctor/patient relationship

Influence of genetic testing

I never ask about these, because I expect my interviewees to be well informed, so I freely give them to you for pondering.

Last year, I was asked about
1) obamacare/future of healthcare at every school
2) abortion (this was interesting. even when i stated that I don't have to perform any procedure I am not comfortable in doing both ethically and legally, interviewer insisted otherwise. It was probably a stress test)
3) smoking/obesity
4) patient compliance issues
5) confidentiality issues

ACA. A few schools I've interviewed at, the interviewer said it was a required question and/or part of their recommended questions sheet, and it's come up at every single one of my interviews.

I would prepare a good opinion on it, and make it as bipartisan as possible.
