Q: A dog's urine accidents are cleaned up with newpaper followed by harsh discipline. The dog hides under a bed any time the newpaper is brought out to read. The dog's behavior illustrates:

My answer to this question was classical conditioning...but the actual answer was operant learning. I read the explanation given in the solution box but I still don't understand... 🙁

The question doesn't really say anything about the dog's urinating behavior after the harsh discipline...so how are suppose to assume that the discipline acted as a punishment to decrease the behavior???

yeah i was annoyed with this question too - i think it has something to do with the fact that they didn't purposely associate the dog's hiding with the newspaper so they were not trying to condition the hiding response?

top score is really annoying and their solutions are riddled with mistakes and typos that you would think they would iron out since they've been selling the same thing for 50$ a pop for over 10 years (one of their program files is from 1998). It gets worse when they have a no-error guarantee on their site...

i think you just have to get the overall idea here.
operant conditioning relates to a reward or punishment system, and because of the punishment, the dog's behavior changed.

In classical, you are associating between two stimuli.

hmm Isn't it Punishment to Dog for urine accident. and Punishment is one of the categories of reinforcement. Same as Operant Conditioning

I took this test today too and put operant conditioning..

I guess because the dog learns to associate sound of the newspaper with punishment.. its classical.. 2 un-related stimuli.. since they are not using the newspaper to dicispline the dog....

If they said the owner smacked the dog over the head with the newspaper then it would be operant.. because he learns to associate newspaper sound with trial and error (pain) ---> operant..

but still its a little confusing..

I'm pretty sure it's because hiding under the bed ISNT an innate response. In Pavlovs experiment when he rang the bell it triggered a natural reflex in the dog (salivating). Operant conditioning is a learned response to a stimulus by either positive or negative reinforcement. The dog learned to hide under the bed when the newspaper came out because he had his ass beat too many times. I'm pretty sure if it had something like, the dog lifted his tail (innate response to fear?) everytime the newspaper was brought out, it would be considered classical.
