I am truly torn between Biomedical Engineering (Or any engineering profession in general) and Pharmacy. The reason I am having such difficulty choosing is because if I apply to Pharmacy I want to have a solid back-up degree to fall back on if I don't succeed in getting accepted into Pharmacy school. But, it seems like some of the degree options are not ones that I would like (such being biology, chemistry, etc..) Has anyone else been in this certain predicament? I am a freshman at University and it is frustrating because I don't want to take lightweight classes while im trying to make this decision...

Why not just major in biomedical engineering while doing the pharmacy pre-requisites? The major/degree you choose usually doesn't matter too much and even still, Biomedical Engineering is still a legit science degree (unlike business for ex). In my opinion, you should choose the major you really want to do because you will probably have more interest in it and therefore you might get a better GPA. But choosing a major like Biology might help you more for the PCAT.

If you pursue a biomedical engineering degree, you could probably still knock out your pharmacy pre-reqs in the first two years (or three) and apply to pharmacy school before completing the degree.

If you get in: no backup degree required!

If you don't get in: Finish the degree and apply again

If you get in this time: Hey, you're in and you have a backup degree!

That's if the classes overlap between the degree plans, of course.

I guess you have to ask yourself how badly you want to go to pharmacy school. If this is something you want, you'll make it happen. Good grades, extracurriculars, shadowing, etc, will make you a competitive applicant, and with the number of schools out there today, there almost has to be at least one school that will take you if you meet all the criteria.
