total comedy thread of blunders

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I am so slow to respond to threads that actually interest me. Ya'll have already covered my points and opinions. I guess my post really has no purpose then.

Word!

I actually had a high PCAT but my GPA was on the low side due to Ds and Fs in the Organic Chem series.

How are you managing to pass Med Chem then?

As far as an average student from a well-respected school vs. a go-getter from a new, unproven school, I agree. Most places would take the go-getter from the new school. However, the majority of students from any school are simply average. The average student from UCSF will always beat out the average student from NEOUCOP (wherever the hell that is).

this is blossoming into a school bashing thread. I really think that school is what you make of it. If you want to count by 5's, you will do that no matter where you get in and there are people like that no matter where you go.

now granted, more established schools usually have a better education.

here's another award winning post....

Does this remind anybody of the old HICP posters? I wonder whatever happened to mr Ha Hasan...

I don't want to rain on your parade but my gen chem and organistry were taught in a team learning format. My undergrad school is well respected and all my classmates went on to post-graduate education.

Team Learning is an interesting concept and for some classes I think it works. Its not some quack scheme and its been used for years. Its not new. But I dont think that it is meant for every class.

Outside of that, school sounds like a risk. I wouldn't go there, I just don't think people should necessarily discredit team learning

I never said I have a problem with the problem based learning approach...its the general attitude and tone of some of these people that talk like they have the inside scoop of schools, especially if they attend the school, when in reality, they dont know jack.

So which is closer to the truth...the dilution of the pharmacist pool will make us look better and more desirable...or it will just make wages go down and the powers that be won't care that some guy graduated from Jim Bob's School of Pharmacy?

Well, I retook Organic Chem to get an A and a B, but PharmCAS counts all grades in their GPA calculations, lucky for me, in 2008 Touro did not use PharmCAS, so my GPA was 3.1 instead of 2.8.

I actually understand Medicinal Chem. Its the Biochem that I am effin clueless about because I never took that in undergrad.

I think retail wages could be driven down. Retail is controlled by corporations, and corporations only care about profit. They would love to eliminate the pharmacist altogether and replace them with cashier if they could. The top execs will do anything to increase profits, make wall street investors happy, and bring home their bigger bonus. If there is a surplus of pharmacists, pharmacists coming out of school with 150K in debt, they'll be forced to take anything to start paying off the loan sharks, and retail will be able to hire the worst quality rph willing to take the lowest wage.

Hospital positions will probably stagnate, but I don't think they'll be driven down. I don't think any DOPs would like to deal with incompetent workers coming from questionable educational systems, they **** everything up.

Don't fake the funk - we are diluting your gene pool - what I believe will happen is the formation of a tier system. At the same time, you will so the requirements for residency / fellowship become mandatory for hospital clinical service positions. We are already seeing this happen - but I think it is going to become more paramount.

ASHP has been really pushing for mandatory residencies this year - it won't fly because the infrastructure just isn't there - but even APhA members are acting on it - which means it wont be long...

Now THIS is interesting...apparently the husband of the dean over at the SoP works graveyard at Walgreens in Morgantown. I'm sick as a dog right now and the wifey went and got me some drugs. They started talking...apparently the view from academia is similar to the view in this thread. For example, the view of the Charleston School of Pharmacy (opened like 3 years ago or something) isn't exactly of the highest degree. Apparently their dean bailed on them for no reason and they are becoming a laughing stock. They had a long, laugh-filled conversation about the debacle that was HICP. He knows more about the situation than the people on here do, apparently. I'm seriously going to go back some time and have a pow-wow with him. I want to know more dirt on Hasan, Monroe, Criswell, etc.

From what I got second-hand from the encounter...these new schools will be looked down upon by the academics. The tier system MIGHT have already started unofficially...because it looks like the established schools are resentful towards these little private, for-profit, me too schools essentially diluting the quality of the professionals available.

Interesting...for real...

I'd seriously like to go talk to the dean about all of this just for the whole gossipy soap opera aspect of it all, but she threatened to kick me out of school once...got a feeling she doesn't like me.

Where's the nearest indy pharmacy to you? Didn't you mention that you did a rotation at one, with a great pharmacist, who took the time to get to know the patient, counsel, etc, etc....?

There are for-profit pharmacy schools? Good lord, I had no idea. Rocky Mountain Vista is the first medical school (it's a D.O. school though) in the western world to be for-profit in god knows how long and it's already a pretty big laughing stock. They are a plague for students in the health professions.

And when you find one open at 2:30AM, tell me. Actually, the nearest Indy is about 15 minutes away in Cheat Lake. The one I rotated at was 45 minutes away.

speaking of medical school, i swear our professors from the medical college forget we're pharmacy students sometimes. we'll get random things popping up on our lectures like "review MCAT level organic chemistry" or some random comment about the USMLE.

It's like that part in Fight Club where he splices in the single frame of porn into the movie. You kinda scratch your head and wonder if they really said/put that. :luck:

probably because they recycle their powerpoints. 😉

oh they do...and written notes, and syllabus...but i mean even in lecture, i'll randomly hear things. but then again, i'm usually half paying attention/half posting on SDN.

MCAT level organic chemistry? Hah you pharmacy suckers, enjoy your Diels-Alder reactions and all that nonsense! I've got a pelvic exam to perform. :meanie:

Haha, well apparently this is the same crap the med students got in their biochemistry/molecular course.

Yeah, stay away from my prostate....very....far....away.

Well to be honest I did apply to a lot of those non-accredited schools just in case I don't get into an accredited school. Luckily I did get into one that is fully accredited and interviewed at my top school. I realize now that I applied to way too many, but I just didn't want to go through the process of applying again (this is already my second time because first time I only applied to a few).

I do think for hospital pharmacy and residency/fellowship, the school you go to does make a difference. I hear that good schools attract companies that offer jobs to P4 students. Also in cases where more than one new pharmacy grad fighting for a spot, school can matter. Then the school you go to depreciates in importance as experience, recommendation, seniority, etc will outweigh importance of school name and much of it will depend on how good of a pharmacist you are which is the most important thing.
