Jesus, there are THAT many crappy new third-tier schools out there? God help us all.
 
ok. I hate to say it. I rocked the PCAT. Like made it my bitch. (Although my boyfriend beat me, he got a 99 composite)


I don't know how people get <50. or even in the 60s. It is not a difficult exam. just had to get that off my chest.

Being as though its a percentile-based test...someone has to get <50.

But...yeah...I didn't even know what the hell was going to be on it and I got an 83. I was told the week before that the only test until the next year was that weekend and I took it as a standby with no idea what the hell awaited me. Got a 99 on math. Like a 30 on biology...lol.

So...yeah...no IDEA how people can do worse than me with months of preparation.

There are a bunch of prepharms posting with sub 3.0 gpas. It blows my mind. It has been a few years since a graduated but do these people actually get in?/ WTF man.

I know. I had a 3.4 science GPA and I thought there was no way in hell I'd get accepted...overall was only 3.27 (Too many Cs in the f'n religion courses they made me take...grrr.)

yeah, its extremely hard to believe some of the standards. I am happy to see my former school accept smaller classes to have quality students than crappy students. They take nothing less than a 60 pcat now and 3.2 gpa. (not great, but not bad either...)

I love you guys!! No jk I dont, but you are a lot smarter than the pre-pharmers (mostly). They just do not believe anything you tell them. They still think they are going to get 30k sign on bonuses, they think they can go anywhere in the country and find a job in the nicest town, and they think physicians are just going to move over and let pharmacists expand their roles if they need a job.


There are plenty of students getting in with sub 3.0 gpas. There are also people getting in with sub 50 pcats. BTW, I had a 3.8gpa and 92 pcat, so I'm not too stupid.
You guys should look at my posts in the california northstate thread. They simply do not believe that they could end up paying $600,000 for their pharmd.
 
I'm torn. I had a low GPA (~3.1 pre req, 2.99999999 overall), so my school may have taken a chance on me.

but my PCAT was a 97 composite - so I did have some proof that I'm not a complete *****.

So I have some sympathy, but if you're 20 and have only gone to school full time and you show up with a crappy GPA and a crappy PCAT score, no! you shouldn't get in!

What if you worked 32 hours a week to pay the mortgage before the bank took the only place you lived for 18 years after your momma couldn't work for a few years AND took 21 hours/semester? Cause that was pretty much me...and a few people I knew back in Parkersburg...

I don't think plenty of kids are getting in with sub 3.0 gpas or at least not into the CA schools. Well maybe Northstate. 😛

The sub GPAs and PCATs don't bother me as much as the lax attitude of many schools toward the Bachelor's degree. The more pharm schools are going to let kids in the door by completing all their pre-reqs at a CC the more the profession will suffer in image. I was surprised to find out a BS is actually something that makes you competitive. It should be nothing but an equalizer like the way it's done in dent/med schools.

I worked hard for my degree and I feel as if it was worthless if I could gone straight to a CC after college and probably gotten wasted every night and still managed to pull 4.0.

I said *only* gone to school - I worked 20-40+ hrs/wk as well (a good portion of that was graveyards). I also took some time off because I had no idea what I wanted to do. But for kids who can just go to college and not work, etc, there's no excuse to have GPA like mine was.

In the end, I'm glad things worked out like they did. My parents cut me off financially when my grades were not so great, and I think it helped me get my life together and on track.

I went to a community college...I pretty much had to unless I wanted to abandon my family in a time of need. And I was more prepared than the people that went to big universities, too. I guess it depends on the community college. Because mine was TOUGH. My organic chemistry teacher didn't give anyone an A the entire year. I got a freakin' 63/70 on the ACS organic chemistry class...I blew away the scores of kids in Ivy League schools...yet it still wasn't good enough for that crazy woman. B+...the best grade in the entire class.

Anyway, that's what the PCAT is for. If you really didn't learn anything, that's where it shows up.
 
I just counted 117 pharmacy schools FYI.

I am not saying everyone who attended a CC is unqualified (and you certainly don't have to prove yourself to me) just that if we want to be treated as equals among different professional groups there has to be a change made on some level.

If there are thousands of applicants every year vying for a limited number of spots established schools definitely have the upper-hand in terms of selectivity. The BS should be the norm not the exception.

I went to a top-tier school and there are like two kids from my school that apply to pharm every year. Why? Because my school is a feeder for med schools. My point is that pharmacy is not going to be a popular option for top students as long as the standards are not up to par with other professional schools.

The PCAT is important but it's funny how CA schools could care less about it. There is also discussion here that the PCAT is a joke (and how it's unfathomable to receive a low score on it) so I am not sure what value there is to it in terms of "standardizing" students from different schools.
 
I don't mind the new pharmacy schools but for once, I would like universities like Stanford starting a pharmacy school, where it would be affiliated with a medical school and hospital.

There are many factors that contribute to why people get below 50 or 60s on PCAT composite.

It could be the person barely passed their classes and didn't learn very much. The person might not know how to take standardized exams and don't bother skipping the hard questions and do the easy ones first. English might be the person's second language and that leads to taking more time to understand what a question is asking; even though he or she knows exactly how to solve it when the question is understood.

On the other hand, the PCAT exam is slightly modified. The quantitative section has definitely gotten harder than the PCAT before 2006. I know because I've taken it in 2006 and most recently, in 2009. I believe the exam should raise its standards by making it more difficult. Nevertheless, please realize that the exam has gotten slightly more difficult; especially in the quantitative section. (I'm sure even with the changes to PCAT, most of you can or will say to yourselves that you can still kill this exam).

haha i was in your shoes, it was a stretch even for my new school to accept me. I was 3.06 overall but a 92 PCAT. This is what happens when you expect 18 and 19 year olds to have a firm grasp on what it takes to get into grad school. Shoot, I was partying and chasing tail like it was going out of style.
 
IF ACPE cared about our profesion they would have limited the number of schools opening up, but as long as they are getting paid I am sure they don't care. And they are getting paid.

Why are there so many pharmacy schools opening up?! Do you guys want the PharmD to go the way of the JD? Having a tiered system for pharmacy would be terrible for the profession as a whole.

its hopeful that people around here will have enough time to make a name for themselves after graduation. The shortage should not effect us as long as everyone plays their cards right. 5-6 years from now, I don't really know

It's clear what must be done. We all must fearmonger as best as we can. Scare everyone who is in it for the money off from the profession. Then those of us, like myself, who didn't even know about the benefits of being a pharmacist when we decided it was our future career, will get in, get a good job and be great pharmacists 🙂

I know, I know, it'll never happen. Whatever. Kill my dreams why don't you.

ha! I continued to be like that well into first year!

but I have interviews at 8 of the 10 residency sites I applied to. Some of those being on the "elite" list that we compiled in the residency sub-forum.

I wonder about the ACPE. My school got in trouble with them for failing too many people in the past. Now they will handhold and even give you a flipping piggyback ride to make sure you can get through. ACPE has all of these guidelines for course objectives and making sure that lecture objectives match exams... So because of that, everything is provided on powerpoint. I had no idea I would get to graduate school and never have to take "real" notes again. WTF?
 
I'm glad, note taking is a pain in the ass and results in stupid questions from people. This way the ******s who just want to know what's needed for the test (most people) just stfu and know exactly what to study. Removing the mysteries from what professors want us to know has been awesome for me. Everyone is here to reach a certain objective, the less subjective bull**** we all have to put up with the better.
 
I guess I just have higher expectations. You should know it all.

Every time someone asks "Is this going to be on the test?" I want to kick them in the shin.

and when they ask "Do we have to know the dose" I want to bludgeon them with something heavy. YES YOU HAVE TO KNOW THE DOSE. YOU'RE GOING TO BE A G-D PHARMACIST.

I was talking with one of the medical residents I was on rotation with last month. And he said it kills him when he asks a Pharm.D. student on rounds for a dose and they don't know it - he could just as easily look it up as they can.

Although from talking to our residents who have lectured at my pharmacy school, they said there are more "is that going to be on the test"-type questions here than where they went.

Holy crap, my sentiments exactly. I got tripped up my first few weeks here because I was carrying over what worked as an undergrad for me (direct note taking on a word document). By the time I got to my first midterm set, having .doc notes AND .ppt notes was practically unmanageable. From there on out I just had the ppt running in class and I'd pay attention/peck in random notes, worked like a charm ever since.

No wonder all my professors stress objectives, I always thought that was a formality. But anyway, I kind of miss taking notes, I was pretty good at it. Now I'm sortof a zombie in lecture knowing that I get spoonfed notes. Good thing most of my professors are from USP and from the medical school and put out good notes.

Why does it kill the medical resident? If he doesn't know the dose why would he expect a pharmacy student to know it?
 
Because we should know the drugs. Kill being a euphemism for annoys/exasperates. The members of the pharmacy profession that he encounters during his residency will likely shape the perception and relationship he has with pharmacy for the rest of his career.
 
WOW i hate to break it to you people but no one is perfect. just because someone is going to a "third tier school" doesn't mean that they will make worse pharmacists than anyone else. Belittling someone just because they didn't get an awesome grade on their pcat or a high GPA- thats just messed up. Everyone's lives are different and you don't know what situation people are in so how can u even judge them and call them stupid?

I hope I never have to work with anyone of you egotistical people.

And I just had to get THAT off my chest.

lol, sounds like someone with a low GPA and PCAT score is trying to tell everyone they're actually smart. boohoo.

It's like those idiots with a 20 on the MCAT and a 2.4 GPA thinking they're actually cut out for med school. maybe you should be looking at another line of work? there's plenty of respectable careers out there.

Actually, it does. Third-tier schools have third-rate professors. There's a reason why there aren't hundreds of medical schools around, there just wouldn't be enough good teachers to fill them.

Hate to break it to you, but dozens of brand-new schools with substandard faculty isn't going to do any good for anyone.

Don't worry - The really good jobs will continue to go to the people that are best at what they do and the most experienced. If that is you, there be no need for worry. However, if you are just an average pharmacy student, going to a fancy "tier two" school - better watch out.

My peers from the "no name tier 3" schools are hungry - and motivated - and plan to steal all of your decent paying jobs. You better start your post-graduate education now.

Bottom line, consider your gene pool saturated - and those that go to small schools always look better on paper.

Yes and No. A student from UCSF, UNC, UT-Austin, etc will look better on paper than one from a small school that is yet to establish itself.

At a smaller school there may be more opportunities to be a chairperson of a committee or officer of an organization, and less competition for a research job, but there are schools out there with prestige that are notoriously difficult to get into.
 
plus, I like taking notes. I still take copious notes on printed copies of the powerpoints, but if I didn't take notes I would fall asleep.

OTOH, I got quite good at the daily sudoku and crossword in the school paper.

I guess I wasn't sure what that person meant by "those that go to small school will always look better on paper". I assume they mean there are more opportunities for *stuff* to put on the CV.

I thought a pharmD was a post graduate education. Oh wait, you can get into a program post high school and with out a bachelors, nevermind.
