First, my apologies to the moderators for an advice question but I'm a long-time member physician in a unique circumstance. Please don't delete the thread but feel free to close it.

To my vet colleagues: I am an American physician working overseas. I have a lab with hip dysplasia in need of at least one if not both hips repalced. He does have two western trained vets who have seen him who say that his is an excellent candidate for THR, but that simply we can't do them here. There are no qualified surgeons within 1000+ miles. As such, I will need to fly him back to the US for treatment.

It is against the policy here to ask for specific advice but I would appreciate any advice, even by private message, for a good center in the US for the procedure. I frankly don't know if the outcomes are better at larger centers or if a local clinic would suffice, but I'm happy to take him wherever needed to try to ensure the best outcome.

Many thanks in advance!

Yup, for a procedure that is like $5000 per hip if not more... You want it done at a teaching hospital or a LARGE referral center that does a good number of them. I know even some boarded surgeons in private practice who don't do hips because they just don't have much experience in them.

i'd get the opinions of multiple surgeons, because i think some people are more gung ho about them than others, and there are certainly quite a few very frustrating and potentially extremely costly complications that come with this surgery. also, know that if you flew him over for surgery, its likely he'd have to stay for months during recovery because flying post-op (even several weeks post-op) could have catestrophic consequences.
