Total number of electon in an atom

I'm pretty sure thats a typo on Nitrogen.. nitrogen is atomic number 7, atomic mass 14 based on the period table I use so that gives it a proton number of 7 and therefore electron number of 7 in a neutral element . Maybe they just wrote down atomic number 14 or 15 based on their table as the proton/electron number oO

Oxygen is correct atomics number 8 in diatomic form it would be 16 electrons total. So the sum of electrons in this case should be 16+7 = 23.

oh and Nitrogen is in group number 15. maybe they used that instead which is wrong lol.

The total number of electrons represented in a Lewis structure is equal to the sum of the numbers of valence electrons on each individual atom. (Non-valence electrons are not represented in Lewis Structures)

So for NO2, we have 1 N and 2 O. Nitrogen has a valence of 5, oxygen a valence of 6.
N=5
O=6

5 + 6(2) = 17 electrons

*Since there are 17, there will be a free radical - I believe on the Nitrogen atom.

I understand what you are saying but the solution stated what I have above.
 
Hmm so now I realize "total number of electrons in an atom" is what the question is asking for.

In this case, I think Bu2009 is right: you would add Nitrogen's 7 electrons + 8 electrons/oxygen (2 oxygen) = 23 electrons in the NO2 atom.

However, if you were drawing a Lewis structure THEN you would do 5 + 6(2) = 17 electrons as I said in my original post.

I have no idea how/why your solution is getting 31!
