... black, african man...what ever you want to call him standing in a crowd of all white people... everyone same hight and weight and wearing the same clothes... you bring someone over that doesnt know anyone in the group and ask them to pick out the guy who does not belong and ask why doesnt he... do they say because hes black or because hes african

People who are different don't belong? Or are they ok as long as they sit in the back?

At first I was just messing with PharmDFisher... but im starting to think he/she is blatantly white supremacist.

Wow, this thread comes up every single year.

Get the word out... Science has long since proven that race/ethnicity is a purely social construct. It has no basis beyond perception. Incorporate it into your world view.

Pharmacy schools are very interested (most of them anyway) in admitting a diverse group of qualified individuals to each class. The majority of my class is "white", but we have a really large number of students from all sorts of ethnic groups. Their admission statistics are pretty close to the distribution of those groups in the local population. There are two exceptions - Hispanic people and African-American people. Those exceptions are due to fewer qualified applicants.

The University of Colorado makes a huge outreach effort to middle- and high-school students in those groups who want to pursue education in healthcare professions. I think they're still compiling experience and data, so we'll see how it pays out.

This issue is so complicated. Are disparities ethnic, economic, familial or perceptual? It's probably a combination of factors with some factors reinforcing others. How about we work to make sure that everybody who wants an education and can succeed academically is given a chance to get one? Enough pointing fingers. That's just ignorant. If one is ignorant, there are tools for education available. The best tool is experience with a diverse group of people.

ok...that is a stupid question. I would call them black or African still... if someone is from the Congo do can you call them African...no duh Congo is in Africa..

and that guy up there talking about the minorities have less and what not...
whose fault is it they have less? And I'm not going to say there isn't disadvantages of being African or middle eastern, but be black right now in the united states isn't necessarily a good thing but it sure the hell isn't a bad thing. You hear about how Africans have been wronged, I'm sorry I wasn't alive during that era. And for me to pay for something that happened when I wasn't alive is a bit ******ed. Is it my fault that 1 and 3 black men will commit and be charged with a felony by the age of 18. Last time I checked no it wasn't. And to give minorities a racial preference because of hardship and what not, is a big problem. Oh well guess its better to be of a minority than to be smart these days. And know I'm not saying minorities can't be or are not intelligent.

"1 and 3 black men....." Would that be "four?" Four black men will commit and be charged with a felony by the age of 18? Interesting.

However, I am smart enough to determine that you probably intended to say "one in three black men," so I will continue based on that statement, even though it's not what you wrote. Now then- got any empirical evidence, from a peer-reviewed source? In other words, got any legitimate stats? You might want to check the sources of your "statistics" before you quote them. You see, we don't actually know how many of these crimes are committed, or by whom, or the racial/ethnic/gender information on the ones who commit all the crimes.... we only know about the ones that are reported, and the ones that are documented.

Oh..... what if the South African is caucasian? Are they still African? If that person emigrates to the US, does that person become African-American? Why or why not?

I know someone like that. She's from South Africa, and she's of European decent.
There was an "African" spirit day at her school, so she mentioned that she was African. A girl told her that she wasn't African, because she was "white".
She didn't participate in the spirit ceremony, because she didn't want to offend anyone or cause a conflict.

By the way, Caucasians are from the Caucasus Mountains. I'm considered "Caucasian", but shouldn't be because my ancestors are northern European.
So, I consider myself a European American.

Thank you for pointing out my typo, you can look in many places, and get different numbers... heres an easy way to look at it, 40% of the inmates that are in our jails are African decent, and Africans make up 12.1 % of the population of the united states... on the other hand whites make up 74.4 % of the united states population and only make 36% of the inmates in our jails. and where am i getting this from you ask? Try Bureau of Justice Statistics website.

Well they are right and wrong, Caucasian refers to the people from the demographic region of the Caucasus mountains but most of Europe has been accepted under this demographic region. So really you are Caucasian and she is African with Caucasian ancestry.

I am mostly Black, however, I do not think that race matters alot. This is because I know a lot of minorities applied tomy pharmacy school (private) and there are only 3 black people in my class and some others, but still mostly white. Just do your work and let that speak for you. If anything, as being a minority, I feel as if i have to work harder to prove myself. Its just the way the world is. However, I dont gripe about it, because I am a good scientist and will be a good pharmacist. So choose whatever box you identify with and let your academics do the talking.

i'm confused...way back when, "black" was politically incorrect and "african american" was preferred. Now...it's the other way around? What the hey! can someone answer me that? i don't wanna mistakenly say something wrong

Just depends on the person.
I prefer Black. This is because Chinese american, japanese american, AFRICAN AMERICAN, to me means that the persons' families ties are from these places. My family is so far removed from Africa that I couldnt find a person in my geneology actually from Africa for many generations. Since whenever my family arrived in the country, there have been many races introduced into the blood that runs through my veins on my mother's and father's sides. We have kept track with the lineage in my family, which a lot of families have not. However, when the world looks at me they see Black, not any other race. Therefore, I consider people from Africa who live in the US to be African American.

This is just my view and how I identify myself. Black

No, that's a historical error. Some geographer from the late 1800's theorized that all Europeans were linked to the Caucasus Mountains. Many people consider that a myth or very unlikely. Therefore, saying that I'm Caucasian is like saying that people from Russia and India are Chinese just because they are linked to China.
I don't think I'm Caucasian, because my ancestors were never part of that area. Most of my ancestors lived within the Baltic Sea countries.
For all we know, the world could have been one huge mass, and we're all linked.

Once again, you are using statistics that are collected AFTER the police have intervened, AFTER trial AFTER conviction. You are missing the point--- I contend that there are a significant number of equally heinous crime committed by whites, but those "crimes" are overlooked, or not documented, or he jerk gets off because he has a home to maintain or kids in college, or whatever. Maybe it's because when the police caught up to him he was working in an office building, wearing a **** and tie, and not out on the street dressed in a t-shirt and wearing dreadlocks. Regardless of the reasons, the numbers are skewed.

I have a very dark-skinned colleague who HATES the term "African-American" because she is not of African ancestry; she's Cuban/Caribbean. She calls herself Black.

Who cares, skin color is skin color... On your application it doesn't say what color are you does it? no, it ask your race.

lol so now the courts are racist...thats funny, so african american judges, cops, and the rest of the african americans in politics are going against the black population too? the day that there are more african americans or hispanic people in this country.... im going to speed as fast as i want and get a ticket and call the cop a racist.

Your interpretation of the statistics of US inmates lead you to believe that the race is the reason behind crimes committed. And your lack of realization of racial bias of the US judicial system is laughable.

Go study and read more before you spew off your uneducated opinion.

Bahaha.... your an idiot, and a racist. There is not a bias in the judicial system. Just because more African Americans are convicted of a crime, doesn't mean that the judge or the courts are biased against African Americans. Hell one of the supreme court justices is African American. let me guess he hates African Americans too.

I can point out so many psychological studies that prove you wrong. You don't need to look further than a textbook from psych 101. Juries typically sentence black violators with significantly heavier punishments compared to whites committing similar crimes. Your arguments are weak and rely on assumptions. Please look all of this up, I hope it will open your mind instead of relying on faulty correlation-causation logic.

I won't respond.

Thanks.

i have taken psychology 1 and 2 , also taken law studies. Your an idiot because juries don't sentence people... the judge does, jury finds guilty or not guilty. no sentencing in there

My mistake, but that doesn't take in account that you ignored my point. Try not using personal attacks and contemplating what people write and logically responding - is it necessary to call everyone in this thread an idiot? It's a great way to convince other people other than to reinforce your own beliefs - you just might as well try typing out "your" in its correct form.

oh excuse me, thought this was a professional school website, not and english major website. my mistake.

What a trite and typical response; I'm glad you appreciate the irony of your own statement. Now try acting like a professional. But of course, if you enjoy acting like a wise-ass and deflecting every response with some petty remark - by all means, go ahead. The report post button on the bottom left beckons you.

Study: African Americans receive higher interest rates on their home loans than whites. This is even AFTER normalizing for income, credit rating, location, and type of property.

Yes, but juries can recommend certain types of sentencing. It happens all the time in murder trials. The jury can be lenient or want the death penalty.
I used to watch CourtTV and A&E obsessively. I didn't renew my cable tv, because I needed to stop watching those channels.
Oh, another thing is that judges take into account jury recommendations, so the jury can significantly affect the outcome of sentencing.

Let's keep it civil please. Spirited debate is permitted, but personal attacks are not.

Good Point....

Nonetheless... PharmDFisher you are an idiot... a racist idiot.

There are many ways to argue your point that there is not a widespread mainstream bias in the judicial system without demeaning yourself as blatantly bigoted yet your own ignorance blinds you from expressing yourself logically or accurately.
For example, using Justice Thomas as an example of a black judge to prove a lack of bias... the US Supreme Court doesnt rule on criminal cases. Using shady statistics to prove your assertions when better accurate stats are likely available is another foolish manifestation of your incompetency to even post.

Finally the whole logic is flawed.

Is there a larger percentage of black/African americans in the US prison system? Perhaps... Is it related to skin color? No.

As a student of science you should recognize the plethora of additional variables you are neglecting in your vast racial experiment here. Being raised in a single parent home has a much more reasonable relationtionship with prison statistics than skin color. Also childhood abuse can be related to the inmate population. Being raised in poverty is another possible source for a study of inmate demography. There are so many other variables that you ignore and instead focus on skin color as your absolute cause!

I also find the claim of a mainstream judicial bias dubious. I will admit that in some instances and locations there are probably judges/juries that posses a racial bias. However, I cannot neglect to also admit that there are judges/juries in some instances and locations that out of fear of seeming biased acquit criminals (ie OJ).
