I was fortunate to have been accepted to 2 DO schools so far this cycle - Touro Nevada and NSU-COM. However, I am torn between the 2 schools and the deposit deadline is fast approaching. I was hoping to get some advice into this matter!

First off, I am a Cali resident, and though not likely, I would prefer to practice medicine somewhere on the West Coast in the future. However, as my family does not reside in America, I am open to practicing on either East or West Coast.

NOVA Pros - Reputable, supportive and friendly environment, amazing facilities (gym, etc..), location, great clinical rotation sites, Dual DO/MPH Program which I am interested in, great place to learn OMM

NOVA Cons - expensive, far from home (as somebody who has never been outside of Cali my entire life), huge class size (248), Spanish requirement (may be good or bad?), only 4 to 6 wks of dedicated study time for boards

Touro Pros - Closer to home, cheaper to live (Henderson), easier to match into residency/get a job on West Coast in the future, smaller class size (135), 2.5 mos of dedicated study time for boards

Touro Cons -
Recently established (2004), Concerned about the 2 new MD schools in Nevada and how they may affect residency placement/rotations, extremely small library and gym, campus is basically a huge building with no windows

Any Advice helps, Thanks guys!!!

FWIW only UNLV is matriculating in 2017 with 60 students.

Roseman's future is not looking too bright

Do you have a particular specialty you're gunning for that the school choice would make a difference for?

The Spanish requirement is a joke. It definitely shouldn't be factored into your decision making

As someone who hasn't heard of NSU's Spanish requirement before, what is the requirement?

I really like TUNCOM, but I vote NSU!

Another con for NSU is the higher likelihood of natural disasters (e.g. Matthew..). In Nevada, you might get the occasional earthquake?

In the end, both are great academic options. Maybe the big deciding factor for you might be based on what kind of fun things you can do on the occasional day off you'll have, like Goro mentioned:

Las Vegas casinos/shows vs. Miami clubs/sports (no professional sports teams in Nevada!)
Henderson rock climbing vs. West Palm Beach... beaching... (beach stuff.. you know)
Dry hot Nevada vs. humid hot Florida

And think about the types of people you may encounter in clinical rotations around the schools too. Las Vegas would definitely provide an interesting pallet of individuals to say the least... (I would think)

Also, if you live in Ft. Lauderdale area there are tons of other big cities around you within reasonable driving distance (Orlando, Tampa, Miami, West Palm Beach, all <4 hour drives) whereas Henderson only really has Las Vegas and (if you want to drive 6.5 hours..) Las Angeles, CA.

Isn't your deposit deadline in December? :wideyed:

I'd take a look at their rotation sites.

Raiders are going to Vegas next year and I believe they're trying to get either a MLS or NHL team

Vegas is 100% confirmed to be getting an NHL team in the next year and they just opened the T-Mobile Arena which hosts concerts, sporting events, etc. There are always new things happening in Vegas and Henderson. At the moment they are not likely to get an MLS team.

The "occasional earthquakes" that happen will not be felt by you, they will only be registered.
Vegas has great hiking all over, night clubs, a million bars, diverse food and is a 24-hour city.
Also Henderson (if that is where you choose to live) is only 3 hours and 50 minutes from LA (not 6.5 hrs).

Keep in mind I have only been to Florida once and know basically nothing about their programs.

P.S. if you do choose Touro and you eat at a casino buffet, Las Vegas & Henderson residents will judge you.

Oh wow, I must have had the incorrect city for that drive time or something to LA. Thanks for the correction.

Not especially, I haven't decided which specialty I wanted to go into; I just want to go somewhere that matches students into a variety of specialties!

Yeah, honestly I really liked the campus much better at NOVA! I'm really into sports (Free Miami dolphins home tickets!!), I am perfectly fine with humid weather, and I feel that I will be able to do a wider variety of activities in Florida compared to Nevada. I am also very much looking into the dual DO/MPH program at NOVA. Outside of academics, NOVA >>>>>>>> TUNCOM.

However, I have 2 main concerns about attending NOVA: 1. I have heard you only get 4-5 weeks of dedicated study time for the boards which apparently isn't much. and 2. As a current Cali resident, wouldn't attending NOVA as opposed to Touro Nevada make it infinitely harder for me to practice on the West Coast?

Isn't your deposit deadline in December? :wideyed:

I'd take a look at their rotation sites.

Yes, NOVA's deposit deadline is in December. However TUNCOM's deposit date is 2 weeks after you get accepted, so around November 5th!

I have heard good things about NOVA's rotation sites, and I'd imagine TUNCOM's to be pretty decent as well.

Would you happen to have any specifics into this Spanish requirement?

You do a patient interaction with a "Spanish speaking" patient. It's like 10 minutes long and really easy. Memorize some Spanish sentences. Everyone passes as long as you don't curse in Spanish haha.
