Hello everybody,

I am lucky enough to have just been accepted to Touro-NY in Harlem! My interview at NYCOM-NYIT went extremely well too so I am hoping for an acceptance there. I am looking for some insight from members of SDN. I hope to one day do my residency and practice in the NYC area. Touro NY is of course located in the city itself, however I have heard the NYIT has more clinical/residency history with the city. Can anyone offer me any advice on which school would make more sense for someone who wants to end up in NYC?

Thanks a lot! I need to get back to Touro very soon (2 weeks) so I appreciate any feedback.

100% both will give you very strong opportunities in the city.

If the cost difference is minimal then go with whichever one you felt happier/more comfortable at.

If the cost difference is large (like 5-10K+ difference) then just go with whichever one is cheaper and dont look back. You will get to the same point from either school; but at least you will have less debt with the cheaper option. Your future self will thank you.

NYCOM is obviously the more expensive one, but it's a bit more on the outskirts of Queens. I feel like if you got an apartment in Queens/Long Island, and go to class, you wouldn't be as distracted. Touro is in Harlem, and buying a car is unreasonable getting into the city. The subway is efficient 75% of the time, but there is always a risk of getting distracted from your studies, so that's a very big factor.

Coming from the stories I've heard from one osteopathic physician that I work for that is a NYCOM alumnus (so obvious bias), NYCOM was the better choice when he was trying to decide which one is best.

Just an FYI, while NYIT has more of a history, Touro is now a member with NYIT in NYCOMEC, which is the hospital and residency affiliation in the greater NYC area for DOs.

Tbh, the hospitals offered in NYCOMEC is actually not going to give yourself the best shot. The hospitals are not as equipped as they should be. I've been to ~75% of them.

..but I'm just another forum guy, so do your research.

Wait really? That's awesome! When did that happen? I recently got into TouroCOM and my only apprehension is the clinical rotation sites. I'm surprised that if TouroCOM gained access to NYCOMEC why wasn't it brought up during my interview day? They only mentioned that they are still trying to secure spots at Harlem Hospital.

It's not rotation sites but "affiliations" as part of an OPTI. It's a post-grade affiliation.

Touro rotations are still what you've heard on interview day.

Agreed, not all are dream hospitals. However, for more competitive specialties as a DO in the NYC area, they are your best bet/only option.

Hi so i was in the same dilemma as you last year, choosing between NYIT and Touro. I ended up choosing NYIT and do not regret my decision at all. First and foremost
Location- Touro is located in harlem, manhattan and NYIT is located in Old Westbury, Long Island. I live in Queens and NYIT is a 30 min drive and 50 min during traffic. Touro would be at least a 45 min train ride for me. So NYIT won in the location category
Rotation Sites- NYIT has rotations throughout the city and LI. During my interview I was told that Touro only has Staten Island hospital as their spot in the city. All other rotation spots are in Pennsylvania, upstate NY etc. NYIT won for me again
Mandatory Attendance- All lectures in NYIT are streamed and as a result lectures are not mandatory. I would only have to come to school 2-3 times a week. I don't remember how the clicker sessions worked but I was pretty sure I would have to be at Touro more often than Touro
So in the end, NYIT was a better fit for me

Just to add. We were given firecracker, pathoma and combank from nyit this year

That's pretty sweet about firecracker and Pathoma...

In my opinion, the mandatory vs non-mandatory attendance component is something to highly weigh.

Just to clarify, Touro has rotations in staten, nyak NY (just north of manhattan), Brooklyn, the vast majority of sites just across the water in NJ (15 minutes from Hoboken to midtown via train), and a handful of spots where the new campus is 60 mins north (incoming class won't have those). You get one of those sites only, you wouldn't be a traveling suitcase until 4th yr. It's completely reasonable to stay in NYC if that's your desire.

I appreciate everyone's input. This will be a tough decision for sure

If you want to live in NYC go with Touro there is nothing like it !!

NYIT more suburban but it is located in a very posh area so cost of living is still expensive !!

Clinicals @ NYIT are better, when I interviewed I didn't find the facilities anything special compared to the newer schools. But, it has a great reputation in this area so you can't go wrong. Touro NY is also well renowned in tri-state area.

@Matrix0992 I continually meet academic physicians at major NYC hospitals/schools that don't even know either school exists. Some of these hospitals are <1 mile (20-50 blocks) away. I wouldn't say "renown" is the right word. Both are great options, but they are not well-known compared to other institutions.

lol Troll :soexcited:

Since everybody seems to know much about both schools, can you guys give me a bit on insight:
What are Touros screening numbers for sgpa, cgpa and mcat?
Does NYIT look for specific things in the application? I don't have research experience, but i have A LOT of volunteer work, DO + MD shadowing, 4 lors etc. bbbut gpa is on the 3.0 borderline. Does that breaknthe application for Touro and NYIT??
