Hi everyone,
I need help in choosing a campus. I got accepted by both Touro and Western University. I live in San Jose; which means 1.5 hour from Touro and 8 hours from Western Univeristy. On the other hand, Touro is not accredited yet. What do you think? Any Opinion or input is appreciated.

Thank you.

I would choose Western because they have been around longer but it is your choice do what is best for you

A fellow SDN told me that with Touro you're pretty safe.. even if Touro does fail accreditation (like UCSD and Loma Linda) current students still reserve the right to take license exam and obtain their PharmD. That's my response if you're scared about that...

Personally.. I would stay close to family. You can always go home and visit your friends.. and you know the area well. Going faraway is just plain scary.. a trip into the unknown. Okay maybe for me since I'm an introvert...

Didn't you see each campus and see each program during the interview? Which one do you like better? I can't say for sure because I haven't been to my Western interview yet.

I'd probably have to think about it, Touro is only 45 mins away from my parents home, but a part of me wants to go to SoCal for pharm school and Western is more established but I already paid the 2k for Touro.. hmm yeah I'm no help 🙄 If I were in your situation I'd probably have to think about it too.

And yes according to the dean of Touro and the APCE website you can still take the boards if you graduate from Touro because they have candidate status now.

If family/friends nearby will help Touro. If they will distract you from studies Western. For me, I have 2 kids and family close by is very handy for things like that. 😉

If you want to improve my chances of getting in at western choose Touro :meanie:

It's obviously a personal choice (family, cost of living, friends, curriculum, etc). But personally, I'd pick Western in a heart beat. It's been around longer, has a MUCH NICER CAMPUS (hell, anything looks nicer than that "island" Touro is on), and nicer weather? 🙂

Pro's of Touro (imo): has 2 yrs in class and 2 yrs outside of class. Less time spent in classes and more real world experience. Near San Francisco and everything the city has to offer. Although not fully accredited yet, I will have no doubt of it doing so in the future. Mare Island campus is one of many Toruo campuses nationwide (NV, NY, etc).

But for me, Vallejo is a poop-hole and Mare Island is a poop-hole. But that's all. It's definitely more of a location issue for me.

Congrats on having options. Good luck with whatever you choose.

I was in similar position last year. While I wanted to stay close to friends and family in the Bay ARea (mainly San Jose), I was truned off by the ghost-town looking campus of Turo. I aslo did not want to take the risk by attending a pharm school that is not accredited yet.

As someone pointed out, staying close to family members might be a big distraction. Trust me you do not want to go home everyweekend. Pharmacy school is alot of work. Make a conservative decision🙂 Best of luck.

I would choose Touro because it's closer to my family. I'm also from the bay area (Fremont). Going back home every weekend for home cooked meals is not a bad idea since I'll be sick of eating out so much.

Thank you so much everyone. It's a tough decision to make, but I haven't make the finalize it yet. I agree, the Touro campus is not too attactive and plus it's on an island. The good thing is that it's in the Bay Area. With that being said, I might land a job after graduation at one of my rotations without having to move. I am leaning toward Touro. But again, I'm so worry about the accreditation. Can a school loose it candidate status? Does anyone know?

Again, Thank you so much everyone.

ttp!!

hey! I talked to you in the Western interview! 😀
Congrats on getting into Western AND Touro.
It'd be nice if you go to Western so that we could be classmates, but I totally understand your dilemma.

To answer your question, any school could lose its accreditation, even if they are already accredited. They do yearly check-ups and see if the pharmacy school meets their current standards.

Hi TTP 🙂

First off, congratulations on your admittance to both Western and Touro! That is quite an accomplishment!

I'm actually a first year Touro student and I don't want to tell you which school to go to, but I think this is something worth considering....

I'm originally from so cal so moving up to the bay area was definitely a big change for me! So, if you've always been close to home, close to your parents and friends, then I think that moving away would be a very rewarding experience. I've grown exponentially in the past 5 months both academically and personally. Although I do miss so cal, I really enjoy being on my own and learning to depend on myself for everything. For me, the biggest challenge isn't pharmacy school, it's breaking away from convenience, placing yourself in the most uncomfortable situations, and learning to overcome those obstacles.

As for the schools itself, I'm totally biased 🙂 I know that Vallejo isn't the most desirable place to live in but it's growing on me 🙂 Honestly, you do not have much free time should you choose to do well in school. School days are long and by the time you get home, you are pooped out. I cook for myself and if you do too, you would know cooking+eating+cleaning can take a good 2 hours. And on the weekends, you're catching up with the past week(s) material.

I honestly think that if you're a happy/content person, you'll be happy anywhere. People complain and bitch about Vallejo or Touro but don't forget, you're here for school, that's it.

In terms of education, I enjoy it because I like to learn. Dr. Yoshizuka who teaches the law portion of Track 3 is awesome! By the end of this year, we'll know enough to take the CA law exam (not that we can, but knowledge wise, we could) He is a pharm D and lawyer so his knowledge is immensely useful! I don't know how many schools that can offer such a course.

Personally, I would rather live in Vallejo over Pomona any day 🙂

hope this helps! Gluck!

Oh and to address the accreditation concern...

It was a big shock to all of us that UCSD and Loma Linda did not receive their full accreditation but according to Dean Knapp (Touro U), there hasn't been a school in history to not receive full accreditation eventually.
