does anyone know any training program that is official&prepares international students like us to take the practical exam req in the university interviews that we get to attend?bec many of us r here for more than yr so we have lost touch wihtthe pracs &also in some univs they r asking some very complicated stuff like 7/8 crown(usc)esp calif side.gettin in depends more on the handwork&how u do on the skills exam at the interview not the percentage of marks.(i know someone with 85 who got in&someone with 89 who got refused!!)some say there is something of the sort in new york?how many of ull have done it?have ull heard of it?how useful is it?any info on prearing fo rthe practical req in the interviews will be very useful.pls do let me know..thanks a lot in advance!!good luck to all.

Hey toothfairy it's a good question, but I too have the same query on my mind 🙂 ..it's true that we lose touch with clinicals after being in US for 1 or 2 yrs..but I don't know how it worked for others who did their clinical exam interview well!..May be they practiced in their house by buying a compressor & using typodont teeth sets 😕

hey does anyone know where can we buy typodont teeth sets....or is there anyone interested in selling comp/teeth sets and how much will it cost approx?
also people who have given a practical test in universities last year,is it possible that these universities let us rent the instruments and stuff a day before the interview so we can practice?
even i have lost touch now so even i was wondering if there was some practice we could get.....

Maybe you guys should try approaching local dental offices or dental labs. 😕
I doubt schools will allow non students to rent their stuff.
Most people that actually get to practice, do it at home with compressor and instruments. Perhaps you should try to find one of those people and offer to pay for coaching or at least for letting you use their instruments. 😕

Run a search on this forum to find out what does the schools test on their practical interview tests.

:luck: :luck:

thanks meggs,
i did a search on the forum for info abt practical exams of various universities if invited for an interview....ucsf and uop provides applicants with instruments....
any info abt usc, ucla and cwru...do they provide instruments or r we asked to bring our own?
also the link on practical exams offred at usc in links of interest....does not work....so any info from anyone who knows abt the kind of practical test that usc conducts will be helpful....

I'm pretty sure those schools have also been mentioned here, run a search again. OR. I think I posted some links to past threads in the "Links of interest..."

thnaks u guys for replying.i am sure i heard that there is an official kind of prep course for students like us to take i am in the process of contacting the person who may knwo more about it.so once i knwo i will passit on to all.but even if they dont have it,how will we each individually do the practice on ly someone who knows wat they expect will be better to guide us rite 🙄 ?for how do we od onlays&stuff?wat abt complicated crown cutting procs?i am zilcho in this!!dunno wat im gonna do.one side of me keeps sayin shut up&do ur exam.one side keeps sayin think completely 😱 dunoo.....!!say if ull get anymore info pls do post it on this thread?!! 😕 anyway i feel a bunch should get togethr&organise it on some univ where we know someone studyin.but gettin ppl togethr is the tuff part..

hey guys,
the handpiece that we use in india like NSK do they work here?
does anyone have any idea?

Hey Starwars as I have mentioned in my other post that CWRU provides the applicant with instruments. They charge $150 for the bench test.
Its pretty hectic with a two day schedule.

Hi starwars,
U can buy an adapter which converts our 3 hole handpiece to a 4 hole system.
This will cost u around $50 instead of buying a new handpiece.
sree.

Hi guys,
USC does not provide intruments and you can either buy them from your home country or from the USC shop it itself. I strongly suggest that you buy simple instruments from elsewhere or borrow them from friends who have given or are appearing for the californian bords. If you get an adaptor for your handpiece thats the best. As for the typhodont i strongly reccomend buying it from the US. i bought mine from India and it was rejected and i had to buy a new one though both were made by Columbia.
As for the preparations, as Meggs said contact dentists in your locality and practice with them , If any of you are going to your home country and have the opprtunity to practice at a clinic there....you can do that. I ws in India before my USC interview and practised there. Yes amongst all the exams USC and CWRU are tough and i do suggest practising those. if you can get hold of the Duggans tape from a friend, view those too.
i hope this isnt too much info at one time
Giffy

thanks pinktooth, giffy and sree for the info

is there any specific place from where u can buy an adapter?
is it just the normal adapter or is it different from the adapter's that we generally buy from indian stores 😕 ?
also reg typodonts..does anyone have the address where one can place an order for those?or u get it in a dental school store?

Starwars,
you can get Typhodont from th school store. I am sorry cant help you with info about the adaptor
Giffy

Hi starwars..
U can buy the adaptor in the dental stores.I think u will find it in almost all the dental stores associated with schools.
sree.

So, what does the adapter do? do we need to buy a compressor along with that? sorry that I sound ignorant 😳

can one(non dentist)carry dental instruments and handpiece in their luggage from india...
will there be any problem at the entry point in the US?

The adapter converts the end of the handpiece to adapt it to the socket in which it will be mounted. It can make a 3 hole handpiece fit into a 4 hole socket, or a 4 hole to a 5 hole, or a 3 hole to a 2 hole. It all depends on the handpiece and on the area you're going to be using it. It's a rather small piece, so hopefully it isn't that expensive.

No, you don't need to buy a compressor with that. But you do need to make sure that your handpiece can take the pressure of the compressor you'll be using. Excess pressure can ruin a handpiece, as you proabably know.

i am worried about composite preps and fillings,,i basically forgot all about it..
is it required in the admission test too ? especially california schools ?

the problem is no one school is like the other, every test is different, i heard some have written tests like part 2 so what should we do to get ready ??
read the books or practice on typodonts or even carve teeth like loma linda request 😀 😀

Hi gsmm,
you need to prepare a Class III composite and fill it at CWRU..
Its not required at UCSF and UCLa ..I am not sure about the rest..

hi pink tooth..you got accepted there, right?..i was wondering how did you practice, did you try it on typodonts first ..did you use light cured composites?

can anyone (nondentist on F-1 VISA) carry dental instruments and handpiece in their luggage from india?
will there be any problem at the entry point in US?

Hi gsmm,
I had left for US as soon as my internship got over so I had enough practice for light cure composits. But no I didnot practice in the US.

I dont see any restriction in carrying dental instruments to US.It will be better to chek if they match US specs as you dont want to get stuck with wrong instruments.

so inspite of the adapter we still need a compressor to work right?
Thanks meggs 🙂

thanks BBGUN,
i was actually more concerned abt carrying the handpiece than the hand instruments...anyways...even i dont think it shud be much of a problem but i just wanted to reassure myself as i didnt want to put anyone else in trouble....
i will check abt the reqd instruments....
thanks again...
all the best....

hi there!
there isa store in colton, california ,called tricounty dental store,u get all the prac stuff for lesser prices than duggan, only the burs r of a lesser quality, but u can ask them to ship the handpiece, typo, teeth and maybe the compressor too.To learn stuff like crowns and other preps, the best place is duggan!I went there to learn my bench stuff but even though I did not get a chance to take the bench, all that I learnt at duggan was very useful to me at the school practical exams and I think thats also one of the reasons that I got chosen at uop. This is what I think.hope it helps.

Thanks for the info shree 🙂
I wish there are places like dugan to refresh our practical knowledge in other Ustates(other than California) too 🙁

You're welcome. If you want to work at home, yes, you'll need a compressor. But you'll still need an adapter when you take your handpiece to practical tests at schools.

I flew with my handpieces (high and low speed) as part of my luggage. I even took it with my in my carry one luggage.

Although, just read what I just found, scroll down to "Tools":
http://www.tsa.gov/interweb/assetlibrary/Permitted_Prohibited_12_18_2003.pdf

Drills and those types of tools are not allowed in a carry one. I assume dental drills must fall within the same classification. So better stick it in your checked luggage.

hey meggs,
thanks a lot....i'll make sure that they r checked in.....
