I am currently PGY1 (Intern) in IM in Los Angeles County Hospital.
Unfortunately my residency program is closing by June 30, 2007.
I have to find PGY2 either IM or Pathology.
Is it possible to transfer PGY2 of Pathology after an Intern year of IM?
Or do I have to apply through match again?

I am xx years old IMG with clinical pathology background (Residency and 8 years Practice in my home country)
Last year I applied both IM and Path.
One program offered me pre-match.
Since I was unmatched in previous year and most programs asked me about passing of Step 3, I accepted pre-match. I passed step 3 June.
Due to my program closure I have to find a training position to become a doctor in California.

Any comments are appreciated in advance.

I don't know the answer to your question, but is your program at Harbor UCLA? Are there other program closures too?

You might be concidered a PGYII for pay purposes (and might not)

But there is NO way you will be a PGYII in pathology. You will have to start as a PGYI Pathology. I don't think the forgein training and practice count for anything official here.
You might not have to match as you are an FMG.

Hospital is King-Drew Medical Center. Trainig institution is Charles Drew University.

My question is wheter Intern year in Internal Medicine can be counted as PGY1 in Pathology.

The answer is no, except for payscale, you will be a PGYI in pathology.
I know DO's who did a clinical internship and they start after that as a 1st year Pathology resident.

OMG. Dude good luck. I think path will be FAR more difficult than something like Family Med tho.

I hope you dont have a family to feed. Any chance you could go back to your home country? The cost of living has to be far less than LA.

And as Borat has shown, even the glorious nation of Kkazastan can be fun.

I need really a good luck.

My husband is taking care of my family. My salary is used for nanny.
I prepared USMLE from 2000 and finally entered a program.
Now I have to find another one. My family crossed pacific ocean and want to stay here.

Is it odd to apply Pathology again after Internship of IM?

...your salary is used solely for a nanny? Why dont you become the nanny and save the money??

Wow, that was an easy solution! I should be a professional career counselor.

A few years ago you could have (when path was a 5 year program), but not anymore.

Isn't Drew affiliated with UCLA? Wouldn't UCLA have to absorb the displaced Drew-King residents?

No wonder they offered you a pre-match contract if they were going to close in a year and just needed bodies. Did you read the contract? I would imagine there would be some sort of stipulation as to what happens if the program closes or whatever. The Tulane program was demolished last year and all the residents were given spots at other places - they didn't have to apply for it. I would talk to a lawyer.

No Tulane programs were demolished last year. Tulane has all residency and fellowship programs that we had before the storm and they are all in the match. Thanks for the kind words, though.

But isnt it hard without faculty?

(There you go Yaah spouting off and offending young residents again...sheesh:laugh: )

I was being somewhat facetious - at the time the hurricane hit, residents were shifted around to other programs without knowing if they would ever be able to come back - and weren't most of them given the opportunity to stay where they were relocated? All I am saying is that no one was just dumped on the sidewalk with their copy of Rosai and told to fend for themselves for the remainder of their residency.
