Would it be dumb to bank on getting a LOR from an away rotation as an M4?

I need one final path LOR and my options are to get it during a rotation at my home institution or during a 3-week away rotation with my top-choice residency program.

I am guaranteed a letter if I stay at home, but then I obviously lose out on any potential benefit from meeting the faculty and residents at my desired program. What should I do? Just play it safe and stay home? Or do the away?

It's a gamble that may not go well for you. I would personally take the known LOR, assuming it's solid, and use the away to decide if you actually want to train there.

ETA, I misread. I would stay home vs the away.
