Can anyone explain how residency funding works? Lets say you do half a year of IM residency and resign and now want to apply to another 3 year residency. Do you still have the full 3 years of government funding since you never completed that first year? Or do you have only 2 years of funding left? Thanks in advance.

You have 2 full years left. But I’m going to be honest with you here, the fact that you quit a program halfway through the year, for whatever reason, is going to be a much bigger issue for you going forward.

So what does it mean if a program states that funding will not allow them to take transfer residents? Isn't funding portable?

Without knowing your specific circumstance (whether you're transferring to a program in the same or different specialty, if you got full credit for your time, whether they have an open spot, etc), it is impossible for us to guess what they mean. Read the document and/or watch the video that aPD linked, because your question is not a simple yes/no.

Honestly, it's also possibly their nice way of saying they don't want to take on transfer residents right now.
