Hey everyone!

Currently, I just finished my freshman year at Chandler-Gilbert Community College in Arizona. I plan to finish my sophomore year there and then transfer to Arizona State University. I am now having second thoughts on continuing my second year at CGCC and was wondering if I should just transfer to ASU now.

Reasons why:
1. Want to be part of the Pre-Health Honors Society @ ASU which requires different community hours, meeting credits before I can even apply, so I can be a full member for at least starting by junior year.

2.Get familiar with the pre-health advisor and other organizations and groups, who will help me with this process they are also going through and can help me find research internships. Also, if I just start junior year, I think I would be behind compared to other pre-med students who were there from the beginning.

3. Community college does not have 1 & 2.

4. Want to get familiar and build good relationships with professors, especially relating to letters of recommendation. By junior year, I should already know professors well enough for them to write letters: hard to do if academic career is split between two institutions.

Reasons why not:

1. Currently on the Presidents' Scholarship that pays for my tuition and fees; plus CGCC's rates are frozen at $70 per credit hour, so cheaper if I want to take extra summer courses.

2. Don't want to leave my General Chem 1 professor because he is great and will be teaching me Chem 2 in the Fall '10.

3. I want to be a part of the Barrett Honors College there, but my chances will severely dwindle if I transfer now because I can get my GPA higher, still working on building rapports with professors (need three letters of recommendation) and just started my volunteer/community work.

Thank you so much for reading this long explanation! 😍
I can elaborate on anything that needs clarification or additional info

I believe the President's Scholarship transfers to ASU. I had the President's scholarship when I went to ASU. As for getting to know professors, it will be extremely hard to do so at ASU since even the pre-health classes are massive. The labs are taught by TAs, not professors like at the CC. From what I understand, they just expanded the Barrett Honor's College- I think it is actually easier to get in now and they obviously give preference to their own students. If you go to ASU and do well, you will have a good chance of getting in. The LOR can still come from your chem prof at the CC. Also, you can still take summer courses at the CC if you want because the CC has an articulation agreement with ASU and the classes transfer over anyway...

Thank you for your help! Yeah that's why I like CC because of the smaller ratio of students to professors. Your insight about ASU is great because I have no clue what's it like over there.
I will have to ask about the President's Scholarship; if it could transfer, that would be great! It's hard getting hold of the transfer advisor though, and the cut-off apply date is June 1, so I will stay this semester, and will then have a much longer time to decide what to do.
Thanks again 🙂

Honestly...the pre-health advisors at ASU aren't going to help you much. I went through the whole application process myself without their help. The only thing you might use them for is mock interviews...but that's about it. They will also store your LORs until you need to apply.

Thanks; that's good to know because I want to get an idea of what I'm getting into at ASU. Though I assume there will be more student there than CGCC I can find going through the samw process, so I know that part will help.

I went to MCC for one semester before I realized that I needed to be at ASU. My top reasons were the stigma of taking pre-reqs at a cc and the lack of resources for pre-medical students. Also, community college just felt like high school to me. There was a lack of social awareness and activism groups among the students. I was hard pressed to find people with similar goals.

The same thing is happening to me. My AP Bio class in high school was more challenging than many of my basic courses I had to take in college. The first really challenging course there was General Chem 1.
Especially when you say this:
There was a lack of social awareness and activism groups among the students. I was hard pressed to find people with similar goals.
And that's a big thing for me, especially in finding other pre-med students.
