I am just wondering if there are any dental schools in the US where accept foreign dental students into their DDS/DMD programs. I know that many US dental schools are offering this special program for foreign trained dentists, but i am looking for a transfer admission.

Any reply will be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

Hi,
Most of US dental schools offer 'advanced standing program'. Those are for foreign dentists who graduateted foreign dental schools. They could be transfered to second year or third year of DMD/DDS according to thier situation.
Contanct admission office or serach the web site for details.
Good luck.

Dental International (DI) Student Program
of Tufts University.

TUSDM has an international reputation, attracting scholars from all over the world. Both the University and the Dental School are dedicated to providing the finest education to qualified candidates.

A prime example of this commitment to education is the Dental International (DI) Student Program at the School of Dental Medicine. This program was created for foreign-trained dentists who would like to receive an American dental degree and practice dentistry in the United States. It is comprised of five semesters (two years and three months) of coursework and clinical practice. Included in the curriculum are such innovative courses as implantology, geriatric dentistry, and craniomandibular and TMD pain management.

Upon completion of the Dental International Student Program, graduates receive a D.M.D. degree, and are eligible for licensure to practice dentistry anywhere in the United States.

Application Criteria and Procedures
The enrollment of new students in the Dental International Student Program occurs in late April.
The application deadline for the Dental International Student Program was November 1, 2000. Unfortunately, Tufts will not consider any applications submitted after November 1. A revised application will be available shortly.

Interviews for the program, which are mandatory, will be conducted between August 1, 2000 and December 1, 2000. Candidates selected for interview will be notified in writing beginning in June 2000. The Admissions Committee considers only complete applications. Do not mail your application without notarized copies of National Board Part I and TOEFL examination results. Incomplete applications will be returned unprocessed.

A complete application consists of:
(1) The Dental International Student Program application;
(2) An application fee of $75, check or money order made payable to Trustees of Tufts College;
(3) A notarized, translated diploma demonstrating that the applicant received a dental degree from a recognized dental school and a copy of the original diploma;
(4) A notarized, translated transcript of the grades earned in all subjects in dental school and a copy of the original transcript;
(5) Two letters of recommendation, in English, from two former professors or one former professor and the dean or director at the applicant's dental school. If the applicant is a political refugee, we will accept letters from dentists or physicians attesting to the applicant's character and suitability;
(6) An official copy of the grades the applicant received on the National Board Dental Examinations, Part I. The last available testing date for consideration for this class is July 2000. Preference is given to applicants who score 89 or better on each of the individual sections that constitute the Board, Part I examination. Very strong preference is also given to candidates who successfully complete Part II of the National Dental Boards with a score of 80 or better. (Passing Part II of the National Board is a degree requirement at Tufts, so you may want to plan accordingly and sit for this examination prior to your anticipated enrollment.) Please send the original Board Examination application and examination fee to us with your D.I. program application. We will produce a certifying letter and forward the exam application to the Joint Commission in Chicago;
(7) An official copy of the score the applicant received on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). Preference is given to applicants that score 600 or better on the written examination or 250 or better on the computer based administration of this examination.

Once the application is complete and has been reviewed by the Admissions Committee, the applicant may be asked to come to Boston for an interview. Pending a successful interview, those candidates who are invited to join the Dental International Student Program are required to send a $ 2,500 deposit to hold a place in the class. Four hundred dollars of this deposit is refunded to candidates who choose not to enter the program once accepted, if Tufts is notified by January 15, 2001.

Information on obtaining a student visa will be sent to applicants who place a deposit at Tufts.

Note: Once processed, Tufts does not return application documents (transcripts, scores, letters of recommendation etc.) to the applicant regardless of the status of the application.

Part II

Passing Part II of the National Board Dental Examination is a degree requirement for the Dental International program; applicants may want to take the examination prior to applying for this program since preference is given to candidates who pass this examination with a score of 80 or better. Students may take the examination by computer at a Sylvan Learning Center by scheduling a convenient time.

If you have not taken Part I or Part II of the National Board Dental Examination, we will, upon request, certify eligibility to take the examination.

To receive an application for either test and a Candidate's Guide for National Board Dental Examinations, write to: Joint Commission on National Dental Examinations, 211 East Chicago Avenue, Suite 1846, Chicago, IL 60611, or telephone (312) 440-2678.

Test of English as a Foreign Language

Limited knowledge of English is the greatest barrier to satisfactory academic progress. Therefore, applicants whose native language is not English must take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). This test is given in most countries and registration materials can be obtained from many U.S. Consulates, USLS Centers, and universities. To have your scores sent to Tufts University School of Dental Medicine, use institution code 3902, and department code 38 on the TOEFL registration form.

For more information regarding this test contact: TOEFL Educational Testing Services; Box 6151, Princeton, New Jersey 08541-6151 U.S.A. (609) 771-7760

Financial Aid Programs

The financial aid programs of Tufts University School of Dental Medicine will be discussed during the interview session. Financial aid application packets will be mailed to applicants that place a deposit with Tufts.

Graduation Date and Requirements

Students are expected to attend all lectures, perform all required clinical work, and take and pass all written, oral, and practical examinations. It is mandatory that students maintain high ethical and professional standards and pay all bills on the due dates. Failure to do so constitutes grounds for dismissal from the program.

Assuming satisfactory academic progress, students who matriculate in April 2001 are scheduled to graduate in May 2003.

Before Tufts grants the D.M.D. degree, the Executive Faculty of the School of Dental Medicine recommends students for the degree to the Trustees of Tufts University, who have the sole right to award academic degrees.
