Hello,
I am a curent first year at Southern College of Optometry in Memphis, TN. While the education I am receiving is a dream come true, I feel really really homesick. I want to go home more than I want to become an optometrist right now. The thought that I am going to be stuck in Memphis for another three years makes me nautious. My home is Dallas, TX. Unfortunatley, I remained stuck on the alternate list at UHCO throughout the application cycle. Does anyone know if UHCO accepts transfers willingly? What should my grades at SCO be like to make the tranfer more probable? Transferring to UHCO would be a big help. Thank you for your feedback.

Maybe I'm writing this message at an off-point in my day, but I really don't see why you've posted your concern here rather than addressed it to U.H.C.O. Write to their admissions office (or call, to speak directly with someone); explain your situation and your desire.

Concerning your grades, it goes without saying, the better they are, the better your chances of having this go through. To my knowledge, optometry schools typically disfavor transfers, as colleges' curricula don't always map up (mostly the same things are taught, but both emphasis and timing can vary). Nonetheless, it's nothing that "never happens," and — with adequate grades and a bit of luck — it might work out for you.

Good luck.

Im new to this board, but i have a quick question. would anyone advise transferring schools?

I am finishing up my first year, and i dont know that I am getting, will be getting the best education where I am at.

we dont have many patients come to our clinic, (which is contrary to what I was told before coming). many of the student doctors have only had less than 10 patients this semester, and i am worried that i wont have changed by the time I get there.

I want my clinical experience to be more busy.

I am also worried about our didactic classes, since many of the students are doing sub-par. my fellow students seem very sharp. it makes me wonder if its the teaching style. I'm not about quitting anything, however...on leaving I dont know that I will have been given a quality education for the amount that I am investing.

anyway, im thinking about transferring. would anyone advise it?

has anyone ever transferred and had success...benefited from it?

I feel it's reasonable for you to want to transfer if you feel you're being given a sub-par education where you are, and that there will be no improvements therein, as you proceed farther in your career at the institution. This said, if you don't yet have one, you'll need to develop a strong sense of the college to which you wish to transfer: not only will you want to be as sure as possible that you won't be trading in one problem for another (or for the same, in a different location), but you'll need to demonstrate to the new school why you feel they'd be a better fit for you. As well, of course, your standing at your current college will have to be quite high for the new institution even to consider your transfer.

*Can you say which school you're currently attending?

yes, I can tell you..but i would prefer to do it more private, instead of bashing my school in public, in case there is someone else on here that could somehow get me into trouble...

i have no troubles disclosing what school i am at, if there is a more private method, and if there is genuine concern to help me out.

Get into trouble? Seriously, you're the one writing the five figure checks. They work for you.

lol, more like they're the ones that send me the five figured bills. Ain't NO checks being written. Anywhere. For Anything. I might as well not even have them. So poor. 😛
