Has anyone heard of students transferring schools? I was wondering if it was possible to attend one dental school for a year and then finish the next three years at another school? Would we have to go through another application process?

is the cost too high?

yeah.. incredibly high. but for some personal reasons also concerning my father's health. How can I make them take me seriously? How hard would you think it is to transfer to a california school (im a CA resident)? UCLA/UCSF .. i dont think UOP is possible since they're on an accelerated program.

this is possible? no way. I would kill to be able to go back to Chicago

It's possible to transfer, but it is usually only if you have extenuating circumstances (death in the family, husband is pregnant, etc). The costs of attendance alone do not warrant a transfer in the eyes of the dental school.

I don't think it's possible to transfer into UCLA. I'm not aware of there ever having been a transfer into the program, and there definitely wasn't while I was there. You could call the admissions office to make sure though. I don't know anything about UCSF.

we've had a couple people transfer here (loma linda) into the 2nd year class. i dont know what the requirements are that you'd need to meet, but i know it has happened in the past.

I think dental school would be the least of one's worries if their husband somehow got pregnant. 😱

ever heard of anyone able to transfer in the fourth year due to extreme personal circumstances????😕

If the husband got pregant, there would be no reason to go to d-school. Can you say - National Enquirer, Oprah, The Late Night Show, book deal, etc............ Money up the butt!

-right, cuz we're all in it specifically for the money anyways...

does anyone know the process one must go through? do we have to deal with applications again? or is it just special forms and paperwork from the school..?

A transfer doesn't sound too bad sometimes, I miss home like crazy, the worst part is I could have gone to school 20 miles from home but went across the country, the school I am at is great but if I could transfer back home I'd deffinatly consider it, I never though cooking would suck so bad

Why don't you contact the school directly and ask them about their transfer policy? They can give you a yes or no or all the info right away.

My general feeling is that every school's schedule is very different and that the best time to transfer would be the end of second year, beginning of third year where students end most ditactics classes and start clinic. Though you also have classes during third year. Some programs even start clinic in the second year, I have heard.

You have made a decision to go to dental school, it is a commitment, stick to it. I know family and personal obligations can be certain factors that change things, but unless it is an extreme situation, I would say try not to transfer.

Whatever it is you are going through, hang in there.

I'd say you are right about not being able to transfer into UoP. At least not go straight into 2nd year if you just finished 1st. Maybe they would let you do 1st over again (which no one in their right mind would want to do). We are already working on patients by the beginning of 2nd year.

Good luck.

there's a few transfers into our D'10 class this year at Tufts.

UCLA and UCSF do not accept transfer students. You would have to start over =).

NYU D2 had 1 girl that transferred to Tufts and 1 guy that transferred to a D school in Ontario Canada (obviously he is a canadian). Probably more that I don't know about.

We had some guy who was a dual citizen (Australian/Canadian) who transferred from Sydney to McGill dental school a couple of years ago. I think he had a family reason for doing so though.

Hi...I would love to transfer to LOMA Linda. Do you know what schools the students transferred from?

husband is pregnant????? lol!!! thats sounds like a good one!!!

I think that it is so rare because so many dental schools take classes at different times as well as start clinical training at different times. It is hard to coordinate. In the end, people who want to transfer probably lose some their status.... maybe become freshman again unless they are clinical students. I have known some 3rd years to transfer in, but they were special cases... International dentist needing American training already dentists in their countries.. and how can a student who just wants to go to another school for financial reasons... These guys do not mind paying astronomical fees to get to their goals..

Would it be considered an extenuating circumstance if I want to transfer to a different school so that I can be with my fiance? He's doing his residency training hundreds of miles away so we'd have to be apart for 2+ years if I stay at the school I'm at now.

How do you think schools would look at that as a reason for transferring?

Hello... I recently transferred out of NYU. No reason needed in Canada.
