Is it totally impossible to transfer after your first year? I know they slap you with a huge (but fair) idiot tax for dropping out of the program, but is it possible that another MD/PhD program or even MD only program would take you? I am aware that transferring in general is pretty difficult, especially when there are no pressing reasons that you must be somewhere else.

Some schools will give you a definite "No", but some consider that on a case-by-case basis. Therefore, it's not totally impossible. Check the websites for schools you're interested in. I suppose you're trying to figure out if it's possible by asking people here if they have been successful in transferring, but their cases will be different from yours and will not increase or decrease your chances in doing so successfully.

Actually I'm not really looking for anecdotal evidence. I think you'll find that once you're actually in a program they are fairly open about their policies. Mine for example, would definitely consider a transfer student before the thesis years if the medical school was willing to accept the transfer. So I was kind of looking for people to point me in the direction of specific programs.

Do you like asking rhetorical questions only to later destroy someone's confidence? I do.
