Hi! I'm currently in my first semester at an island school and considering applying to transfer to a US school. It looks like most of the schools that accept transfers at all require you to complete a full year first, but it looks like some allow you to transfer in for the 2nd semester if there are spots open (unlikely, I know). I'm wondering if this might be worth trying - there are fewer schools to apply to and I know my chances are very slim, but in theory it seems like it might be better academically to transfer sooner rather than later if I did have the opportunity... if anyone here has transferred after the first semester of first year, or has insight related to this, I would really appreciate your thoughts! Thank you!

I've never done a transfer or know anyone who was, so take this with a grain of salt, but from what I've deduced looking online you'll need to have exceptional grades and you may have to retake some classes if you do get in.

Your best bet is to start calling around to specfic programs you're interested in transferring to and talking them directly. I believe there are quite a few island students attempting to transfer back continental each year so there may be competition for any available spots.

I've never met anyone who transferred in the middle of the school year, but that doesn't mean it's impossible. Your best bet is to talk to the schools you're considering and go from there. It is academically competitive, and there may be interviews, essays, etc.

What schools are you considering?

My class had three students transfer in from SGU or Ross between our first and second semester, but I think they’d been students at island schools for more time than that. They were repeating a few classes they’d already taken. But that was also back in 2011 in the dark ages.

My class at Iowa State University had several students transfer into the first year class for the Spring semester and most of them had only started island schools in the fall. The catch though is there’s some classes we took in the first semester that they still had to complete. A couple small ones they did over the summer but they’ve also had an additional class or two (depending on where they transferred from) added onto their second year fall course load. I know we had transfers from both Ross and SGU.
