Transferring residency...advice needed

Does anyone know how to go about telling your program director you want to transfer to another residency that has an open spot without burning a bridge or making your life miserable in case it doesn't happen?
Any advice is appreciated!

Don't say anything until you're 150% sure it will happen, and you've signed.

The program I've contacted about a spot said they indeed have a spot and pulled my file and said things look good, but can't go any further for ethical reasons until I tell my program director. I'm planning on doing that later when I know more about my husband's situation with his job. It's a tough situation to be in...wondering if anyone has done this?
