Currently, I'm at CC and will transfer to a UC after two years. I want to major in psychology and was wondering if doing Chemistry 1&2 and Biology 1&2 at my CC is ok? I will be taking Organic Chem 1&2, Physics 1&2, Biochemistry, and genetics at a UC. Basically, my question is should I hold off on chemistry and biology until I transfer to a UC or is it ok to do them at my CC? Another question I have is how can I integrate myself into research while at CC? Are there any specific programs you guys recommend? THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME !!!!!

First,
Do your prerequisites at CC because they are usually easier to do given the small class size and less competition with a bunch of other benefits! Doing prerequisites at CC does not keep you out of med school (I did all of my prerequisites except upper div Biochem at my CC). UC lower div (prerequisites courses) are unnecessarily competitive and crowded... you probably don’t want to risk your GPA

Usually people do research at Cc through honors program (most schools have one) or you can look for summer research internship/fellowship with partnered UCs at your campus (I know Santa Monica College has one)!

You can actually also search up the undergraduate research center Website of the UC you want and often time they have programs for community college students (I have heard UCLA has one and likely others as well)

Feel free to PM me if you have more questions 🙂

Perhaps I can chip in 🙂
  • Yes, taking them at CC is fine! And I encourage you to finish them there - they are free. Take advantage of those FREE CLASSES. Get all the pre-reqs out of the way.
  • Take one semester and finish these three: Intro Physics, Intro Chem and Intro Bio. These classes only. These are remedial classes. All you need to do is: get a bit of taste. Don't take General Physics/Chem/Bio YET. See if you can handle this curriculum, as you will enter into college for the first time.
  • Math: take stats at CC. This will be your IGETC ticket. Also take Trig, as they will be helpful in General Physics. Do well in it: Trig is hard. Stats is fun🙂
  • Also, you can do plenty of research when you transfer. But I wouldn't discourage you.
  • >>Take this summer to get CNA certification. Phlebotomy if you have to<<
