Thought I'd put out a post to see if anyone knows about the transitional program at Broadlawns Medical Center in Des Moines, Iowa.

Would really appreciate any thoughts or opinions...

My wife and I both interviewed at the Broadlawns program, and both really enjoyed the faculty, facility, and residents. It is a county hospital so the pathology is outstanding. The faculty seemed to genuinely care about the residents and teaching which was echoed by the residents. Also, the residency supplies you with housing--which includes everything except phone and cable. This adds quite a bit to the salary which is evidenced by the fact that all of the residents drive nice automobiles. The close proximity that the residents live to eachother promotes a family atmosphere--everyone seemed to get along well.

The only minus to the program is the vast amount of call. You ARE on call the whole year. This seems outrageous for a transition year program, but it is not as bad as it seems. All of the call is home call, and from what I was told the only trully busy call months are the ones spent on medicine, peds and ER. The rest is fairly benign and most is spent sleeping in your own bed. Also, there is always an attending who shadows your call--you're never left out to dry.

Overall, I was very impressed with the program, and feel as though it would provide a great intern year experience as the pathology is vast and the teaching is exceptional.

Hope this helps.
