i have never been able to remember all the different translocations. i was hoping that those of you who have found a way to remember them (good mnemonic or rationale behind the numbers) please post below!

Well, you do realize that there is no rationale behind the number, that's just the chromosomes that are translocated-- if you want a reason, ask the Big Guy upstairs. As for mneumonics the only one I can think of is 8urkitt's Lymphoma 8:14 (the 8 looks like a B), and 9hiladephia Chromosome 9:22 that causes CML ( the 9 is like backwards p)

I was just wondering the same thing!!!
I thought of follicular lymphoma - t(14,18) and burkitts lymphoma -t (8,14) (since I always get them confused). The B in burkitts comes before F in the alphabet, so the lower number (8) comes before the higher number...
maybe that seems kind of weird though.....

Anybody else have any good mnemonics or suggestions as to how to recall them more easily???????????

Someone posted this earlier in the menmonics thread. Here's a brief synopsis:

Burkitt's - Think Kight Rider (the old TV show)..imagine the car driving at Night (starry sky) the car's name was Kitt, the car had Bucket seats (the 8 kinda looks like a B so Burkits=Buckets)

Mantle Cell - 11:14 all the 1's look like candles so think of candles on a mantle

Follicular 14:18 - think ffffffourteen ffffffolicular

You should be able to remember 9:22

Let me know if you need mnemonics for any others.

It's been almost a year and a half since I took step 1, but I don't remember a single question that required you to know a specific chromosome translation. It's a low-yield subject, if you're unlucky enough to be asked about it at all, it'll probably be on the philadelphia chromosome 9:22.

I believe many of the straight rote-memorizations questions are OVER-HYPED. Most of the molecular bio questions I had dealt with reasoning questions and not specific translocations.

IN fact, I had ZERO on my exam.

Know the following:

Burkitt's 8/14
Follicular 14/18
CML 9/22

And you'll be fine (if not overprepared)!!!

That's good to know! So,I'll just memorize those and move on to more impt. things!
thanks!

follicular lymphoma:

count all the letters = 18 ---> t(14;18)

Burkitt's lymphoma:

count the letters in "Burkitt's" = 8 ---> t(8;14)

Philadelphia Chromosome:

count the all the letters = 22 ---> t(9;22)

In the spirit of Halloween, its kinda spooky. Boo!
😱

This is what I have..works for me

t(9, 22)? Philidelphia chromosome, CML -->think Crappy MetraLine(BUSulfan), bcr-abl (BeCause they are ABLe to imitate (imatinab) NYC pizza
t(8, 14)? Burkitt's lymphoma (c-myc gene)-->Dj B(8)urkitt on c-myc (the mic) from 8pm-14am
t(14, 18)? Follicular lymphomas (bcl-2 activation)-->think ffffffourteen ffffffolicular
t(15, 17)? M3 type of AML (responsive to all-trans retinoic acid)--->I got my license at 16 +/- 1 year for a bmw M3 instead of an ALL aMerican car
t(11, 22)? Ewing sarcoma-->11 is ½ of 22, like a plane is twice as long as its wing (ewing)
t(11, 14)? Mantle cell lymphoma-->think of all the 1's like a candle on a mantle

Well, this thread is 8 years old, but since somebody reactivated it, I thought I'd mention my own mnemonics...

9,22 is important enough to remember, but FA suggests remembering "Philadelphia CreaM cheese" (CML)

I remember 11,22 (Ewing's sarcoma) by thinking that Patrick Ewing used to get about 22 points and 11 rebounds a game... and it happens between ages 11 and 22 (not precisely, of course).

@ 8:14 Burkitt (lymphoma) had breakfast
@ 9:22 he left for Philadelphia (Chromosome - CML)
@ 11:14 he realized he left his speech on the Mantle (Cell Lymphoma)
@ 11:22 he Ewinged it (Ewing's sarcoma)
@ 14:18 they were still follicularing back and forth (Lymphoma)
@ 15:17 they become Promyelblastic (leukemia)
@ 17:22 they toasted the success and affected their neurofibromatosis
