Transport Proteins - use ATP or not?

Bit confused on this. Do all transport proteins use ATP? Several sources (I believe Cliff's and Chad) say that they do, whereas wikipedia categorizes carrier proteins as a type of transport protein, and those can use active transport OR facilitated diffusion. So which is it?

i've seen in many questions even on practice ada where they get u to differentiate btwn the carrier protein and the active transport... i don't think all carriers use atp, but many do
 
All you have to know is the TYPES of transport. They're not going to test you on whether you know the exceptions or whatever to using ATP.

So, know simple diffusion is just higher ion to lower ion, know facilitated diffusion uses some type of carrier protein/transport protein (think beta barrels that tunnel through the lipid bilayer to allow usually impermeable solutes to go through), and know that active transport uses ATP.

Some important specific ones you should know are osmosis (simple diffusion), sodium-potassium pump (active transport), and aquaporins (facilitated diffusion).

Thanks aqz, normally I wouldn't press this much detail, but a question from one of Chad's quizzes used ATP-powered to specifically identify transport proteins, so I thought it may be important.

For test purposes, they do not use ATP. Active transport is the answer choice that you should see.
