Hey, Does anyone know how trauma attendings at big trauma centers are compensated? Are they paid a flat salary yearly, regardless of how much money they "bring in" or are they paid just like everyone else ($X for Y procedure)? Thanks.

Highly variable - depends on what compensation they have negotiated. But many have a base salary and additional compensation depending on what they bill for general surgery cases (when they take gen surg call), and there may be additional $$ for teaching or administrative duties.

I just heard from some of our faculty that a paper presented at the recent EAST meeting found that there was a sigificantly higher reimbursement when a trauma group did NOT bill for their CPT codes but rather billed their E&M codes. Don't know what group it was, but still...that says something about trauma and how undervalued it is.
