hello,

i really need help figuring out how to get from new jersey to stamford, ct and for the life of me, i can't seem to find a train, plane, or bus to do this. does anyone have any suggestions?? i've already tried amtrak, njtransit, hotwire, orbitz, etc...

any comments would be greatly appreciated!!
thanks🙂

Depends where in NJ you're coming from....North Jersey could be as little as 1-1.5 hours, South Jersey=more time.

Look it up on Mapquest.com

1.5 - 4 hour drive? That's nuttin, man I was driving all over mid-east to the midwest last year for interviews... I am SO sick of Arby's!

Q, DO

thanks for the mapquest suggestion, however i have no car and am completely new to the northeast and driving would be a total disaster and i would miss or be late to all my interviews so i'm looking for an easier way. i really wish i could plop my ass down on some form of public transportation that could take me from new brunswick, nj to stamford, ct...

as always, suggestions much appreciated 🙂 🙂

A rental car for 2 days is probably going to be the cheapest solution - drive up the afternoon prior to give yourself plenty of time in case you get lost, then drive back afterwards.

Ah - the joys of Arby's...I'm sure I'll be quite familiar with that after my 3wk rental car jaunt along the East Coast: Maine to Florida & all parts in between. 10 interviews in 15 business days - bring it on!

Newark NJ to Stamford CT is approx 1 - 1.5 hr by car at the most...you did manage to make it through med school, I'm sure you'll be able to navigate the tri-state area (leave extra time for ubiquitous traffic)

Alternately, though this may be more of a pain, you can take the PATH train from NJ to Penn Station in NYC and then from there the train to Stamford...an option, but it'll take you longer, and lug all your stuff around

The train line that takes you to Stamford is the Metro North (New Haven Line - red one). You will need to get from Penn Station to Grand Central Station in order to catch it. This can be achieved either through a cab or 2 subway rides (one to get you to 42/Time Square and another to take you across to Grand Central).

Unfortunately I don't know anything about public transportation in NJ. Here is the site for Metro North info. You can get fares and schedules there.

MTA website

I'd agree that it would probably be easiest to just drive. Would take about 3 hours (depending on what time you hit the bridge) but it's pretty much just Route 95 all the way up. But I understand your anxiety about doing that if you've never been here before.

i'd agree with the above posts.

renting a car and driving would be the easiest. mapquest provides great directions.

by the time you take the PATH to NYC (i'm not sure how that works) and switch from PENN station to Grand Central, and then get on the Metro North, with all the connections and timing and lugging stuff around, you'll be exhausted and it'll take probably longer than driving. if you have time to spare, drive up the night before and get familiar with stamford (check out where you're going the next day) and you won't be late. plus, i don't think either new brunswick or stamford have great public transportation so you still have to find a way to/from the train station.

on the east coast -- certain times it pays not to drive (traveling in nyc for instance) but i think your best bet like others have said is to drive.

thanks guys! i appreciate all the input...ugghhh, i hate trying to juggle all these interviews...

Im driving from LA-->Ny for interviews and on the way back im hitting the midwest for more interviews. Its gonna take me 3 weeks with an interview just about qd. So 1.5-2 hrs is nothing to get your panties in a wad about.
And I have taken many a road tip an i found that yahoo directions are way better than mapquest directions.

Yahoo is pretty good, but make sure you take a good atlas/US map along. Most of the internet mapping services only route on Interstates. I cut 150 miles off yahoo's directions from San Antonio to Albuquerque by taking a perfectly good state highway that they ignored.

Crimson, how are you at driving in snow? This could be a factor at any time now in the drive from NJ to CT. I have never driven in snow, personally and that is one reason why planes and trains look more attractive to me.

well, hoptoad, i think i would suck at driving in snow considering i'm from texas and have seen snow maybe twice in my life. i think i'm gonna see if i can take a greyhound bus or something...plus, my interview in ct is the day after my interview in nj, so i won't be able to leave early or anything. ughh 🙂

just so you, i grew up in the west and things are much closer here on the east. you can travel from philadelphia (through new york, connecticut) and into boston in under 6 hours. you would be able to make nj to ct, no problem and get to ct the night before. you may hit bad traffic depending on what time your interview gets out. anyhow, if there is a greyhound it would probalby work as well --

you can actually take a train from new brunswick, nj to stamford, ct without having to switch from penn station to grand central. njtransit (njtransit.com) operates on the amtrak northeast corridor line providing service from new brunswick to new york penn station. amtrak (amtrak.com) then provides the rest of the northeast corridor service from penn station to stamford, ct. while the njtransit fare is relatively cheap (<$10 one-way), the same can't be said for amtrak (~$80-90 range). check out both websites, or you might be able to plan out the whole thing on amtrak instead. hope this helps and good luck.
