I've heard on this board that a number of osteopathic schools may require traveling for rotations. This may be a dumb question, but how does that work?

I am married, so my husband will obviously be living near whichever school wants to accept me. I would rather not have to live away from him for an extended period....when you do rotations that require travel, do you have to find an apartment (and hence pay two rents), or is housing provided? Is it typically for the entire year or just one specific rotation?

I wanted to find out a little more about this before I go to interviews so that I know what kinds of questions to ask.

Hey Biotech, I am a current M1 at NSU and I was worried about the same issue as both my top choice schools NSU and DMU have many away rotations and I am married. I don't know about DMU for sure, but I have heard that many people just move to the site, because third year you get assigned a site and are there for the year of rotations.

At NSU, we have a lottery for rotation sites, and if you have an extenuating circumstance such as your spouse cannot transfer jobs, then they will accomodate you with a rotation site near school. But I know we are also allowed to, pre-rotations, switch sites with fellow students as well.

So there are options, I guess just make sure that your husband is on board 100% even if that means moving again 2 years after you start and the next year after that. If youre gonna make it and your married youre gonna need all the support you can from your spouse.

My best advice would be to call the schools you like and ask what the policy is for rotations, can you switch sites with a fellow student, do they make exceptions for married students who cannot move spouses or children. Thats always the best way to get info, is straight from the source.

Good Luck! Hope that helped some.

Depends on your school. Some schools take into consideration your family needs, some have housing provided, some have you do your core rotations (like 3rd year) all in one hospital or at least area. Each school is different but yes, some have to relocate for rotations. Especially the bigger schools that might not have affiliated hospitals. Big ones off the top of my head that I know from my friends is KCUMB, DMU, LECOM. They do have some local spots (and they are growing apparently) but the majority of the students I believe go elsewhere for rotations. I know DMU was working on this, I haven't heard much coming out of KCUMB or LECOM. Those are just the big offenders my friends in medical school have complained about and beware some of this info might be dated by a year or so. 🙂 I'm sure there are more or maybe those situations are improving (I hope so!).
