yeah-- it was on TLC, too. pretty amazing story, and (all things considered) one lucky guy!
I was wondering if anyone else saw that too. That was crazy. Did you see all those people in the operating room taking pictures. You don't see that every day.
The weird thing is that it only damaged the bladder and missed everything else. It could have been a lot worse.

Actually, that episode was about a year or two old. Pretty damn good, though.
My uncle operated on a guy who had a 16 inch drill bit go in through his eye socket and out the side of his head. The bit obliterated his eye, but didn't affect his brain as it narrowly slid right beside it. Lucky son-of-a-bitch, I tell you.
While it is true that someone got hurt. The fascination and miracle of sorts comes from the fact that it was a medical challenge. That OR was filled with people (student doctors) that wanted to see how to approach such a surgical challenge. The man never suffered a fever despite having his entire abdominal region sliced open and rinsed out with Several liters of H2O to remove most of the saw dust. The guy is a miracle. The only internal injury was some piercing of his omenta and a bladder that was torn.

Why are you being so defensive? You're going to be a future-doctor and you should be fascinated by miracles like this. Every volunteer I work with gets excited when the LifeStar helicopter comes in with a trauma -- it's a chance for doctors to do what they're best at doing -- saving lives. And I think it's exciting and fascinating. I bet most people here do too, or there wouldn't be a thread about it.

I have a feeling that it will start to pick up a bit more. Christian is losing his edge - that concerns me.
Back to more universal relevance, - I can just see the apps skyrocketing for medical school because every yahoo that has taken a bio course wants to instantly start doing breast augs and collecting their Ferrari post graduation.
Hmm...will we see another significant increase akin to the old school "ER" days?

Dam, I miss it one week and I miss a funny episode.
I saw that last night too. He was truly lucky to come out of that situation with only his bladder injured, but I had one quesiton about it. Did the stick actually go through his rectum? Because if it did, wouldn't he have damaged his colon as well since the stick went all the way up close to his heart. I didn't hear the doctors say anything about the large intestine being punctured. Just wonderin.
what i thought was sad was that every member of his family was in another country...can't rememer if it was guatemala or not.....anyway, he had to go through all of this without anyone there to support him....almost made me cry....to be there all alone, scared, with a tree in your anus, and to be recovering without family members to come see you or take care of you...can you imagine what it must have been like for his wife and children back home, hearing about this? and not being able to see him or know how he was doing?
I once saw a guy that had attempted self-circumcision. The really amazing part to me wasn't even that he'd tried to do it himself, but that he stopped partway...and then waited three days before he came into the ED.

Once we had a guy who had jumped/fallen from a 4th floor fire escape (it wasn't a suicide attempt, he was just drunk). When the paramedics called it in we thought they said "17-year-old"...turned out they said "70-year-old". He had one broken ankle and literally not another scratch on him. It was unbelievable. The medics said they wouldn't have believed it was really a fall from the 4th floor except that it was called in by his neighbor from the floor below, who saw it happen. The guy apparently never lost consciousness, just hit the ground and immediately tried to crawl back inside.
Whoever said the gods look after drunks and fools.... 🙄
