NAVY DDS 2010

I was just flipping through the channels and came across the National Geographic channel. A show called 'Taboo: Perfect Body' was on. What caught my attention was that in some semi-primative tribe (I didn't see the beginning of the clip to see where they were from), one of the elders was performing an esthetic dental procedure where he was using a wooden block and a machete to chisel all the incisor teeth from the squared look our teeth are to a pointed, canine look without any anesthesia. When the lady smiled, her mouth looked like a pirhana. To the people of this tribe, she now looked beautiful and was fit to be her husband's wife. He happened to be the chief of the tribe.

Anyone interested in becoming a specialist of Tribal Esthetic Dentistry?

That's pretty interesting.

Several years ago at an office where I work, a woman came in wanting a gold star on one of her front teeth (she had dentures). Not quite as interesting as pirhana teeth, but still pretty unique.

I saw a "kid" on the street recently who had multiple piercings, tattoos, and some knobs inserted under his scalp to look as though he were about to grow horns. When he opened his mouth I also noticed that many of his teeth had been ground to points. Probably had a Prince Albert, too...

Why would you use a razor? Scar tissue is generally the same colour as your normal skin tone, but with a different texture. Maybe he wanted the subtle effect, but a tattoo would seem to have been a better idea.

Subtlety, and novelty. Also, some people get simple designs that make you wonder; are those natural?!

Some people gets huge gnarly raised keloids too.

I've seen this episode. It's freaking crazy. And the chicks look really scary after it's done.

I don't know if they still do, but years ago, North Vietnamese women dyed their teeth black to make them more attractive.

I couldn't find any good pictures online of sharpened teeth, but I did come across this fad: eye jewelry.

And I thought this piercing was rather ingenius. Think this would support some flip-up loops?

Are there any pictures online somewhere? I wanna see the pirhana women.

I saw that documentary YEARS ago, way before I decided on a career change in dentistry. I wonder what kind fo problems those women encounter (if any) having their teeth shaved like that. Can you imagine how painful biting your tongue by accident would be?!?! Yikes...
this is the craziest thread i've seen on sdn. :meanie::banana:
