I considered applying to these programs but decided against it because I was considering it more because I loved both peds and psych rather than being definite about wanting to do child psych. It seems very extreme to me to commit to doing child psych from the get-go -- if you were very confident that that child is what you wanted to do, go for it.
On the other hand, I've been very frustrated to find out that many programs don't have exposure to child psych until the third or fourth year. Since I've not ruled that area out, I want to have at least some child experience in the first or second year so that I can apply for fellowships on time. Even worse than not having child exposure until later in residency is the fact that there are many programs where there is no inpatient child and adolescent work for general psych residents.
