Hi guys,

As the title states I am having an extremely hard time finding shadowing. I have a total of 9 hrs at a pediatrician a office and 8 at a rehab center. I have cold called, walked in, emailed, asked doctors I know and even tried asking med schools including sending them a letter of interest and CV/ resume. It has been 8 months and I am coming back with almost nothing. I want to apply next cycle but at this rate I won't have beans for shadowing. Any advice?

Heck, if you live in the Dallas area and have shadowed pm me who it was with and I'll try with them too.

Thanks!

Thanks Ismet,

I've tried that but he said the same thing I've heard from a bunch of other doctors, that his group wont allow him to for liability and HIPAA reasons. We have three medical schools in the area (2 allo 1 osteo) and they've all been pretty silent except UTSW who used to have a program but discontinued it.

Have you volunteered somewhere? Maybe you can get in touch with your volunteering office and they can set you up with a doctor. Ask your pre-medical advisor, friends, friends of friends, friends of friends of friends if someone knows a doctor you can shadow. Ask your PCP if he he can recommend you someone who will be willing to let you tag along. In the end, you do have SOME shadowing, and if you have other clinical experiences, and you can describe them well, it shall be fine...probably. Good luck, Porter.

Try sending out a bunch of letters with your resume (around 15-20). I would include mainly small practices or individual ones since they are less likely to pull the HIPAA violation BS.

have you called maybe the red cross they may have some places to volunteer to shadow

Just email 100 doctors from academic med centers (the key here is an academic one because the doctors are supposed to be used to having people follow them). That's how I got almost all of my shadowing. At least 2-3 should bite. Also, ask your pre med advisor if they know of anyone. That's how I got one of my shadowing experiences.

Have you tried tapping into your college's alumni network? The alumni office and/or career advising center should be able to connect you with alums in your area who are MDs.
