Hello guys,

I am an ex-podiatry student that took a year of courses in medicine and podiatry at Western Univ. I managed to maintain a 3.1ish GPA there, while taking a general medical curriculum with the DOs.

Now my concern is is that I have a 3.88 GPA in undergraduate and my graduate courses will bring it down a lot. I feel as though Dental adcoms won't look at my GPAs separately. The only thing that brings comfort to me is my DAT score, which thankfully got 24 AA and 26 TS on. Had to really prove how serious I was about this career change.

Will schools such as Columbia or UPenn be able to look past my graduate courses?

You could try calling the schools and asking them. I think Upenn will definitely pick up your calls.

Columbia on the other hand is a bit hard to get ahold of.

Most schools could look past it if you have a good explanation for the 3.1 GPA. However, you have to realize that as a Columbia dental student, you would be spending three semesters at one of the world's most rigorous medical schools. From Columbia's perspective, it's not a good sign that you had difficulty with the DO curriculum at Western U. But I suppose the best way to answer your question would be to apply and see what happens.

Tricky situation but yeah applying would be only way to find out. Maybe even call before applying and explain to them your situation and see if they are of any help. But even then, you never know until you apply
