True or false. Nurses and doctors look different.

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
this thread is hilarious. People performing different roles act differently, hence you can tell a nurse from a physician in like 10 seconds. Ohh and the id card also helps a ton.

Must be site specific because IMHO OB and Ortho both tuck in their scrub tops just like GS. Can't say I've ever seen Ophtho actually in the hospital in anything other than a sneer and street clothes.

Everywhere I've rotated, Ortho consists of a bunch of big dudes with untucked scrubs and sneakers. I have yet to spot an Ortho resident wearing clogs of some kind (Dansko, Sanita, etc.).

I can picture that. However, when I was a student the first surgeon to tell me to tuck my scrubs in was an orthopod.

Also, the idea that nurses look 'stupid' is, ironically, stupid in itself. There are certainly dumb nurses out there (usually the ones that try to tell you how to do your job), but there are way more smart ones who are way better at what they do than you ever will be. They learn different things than we do, but they learn those things well. The majority of them are not med school wannabes, and chose a path that is parallel to ours. It's true that we rank higher in the hierarchy than they do, but that does not make us better or smarter or more valuable than them- just different.

This is hilarious in so many ways.

You notice the doctors by the ones dressed up in "nice" clothes instead of blue/pink scrubs + white coat 😛

Especially this month....breast cancer related clothing everywhere 😱

Dude. Why did you post an img of Lizzie Velásquez under the doctors category?
I find it a bit ironic/ offensive that you'd post an img of someone with a rare medical condition as an example. Don't know what point you are trying to make but I think that was post was not very respectable to that patient.

I obviously do not see the world as warm and fuzzy but still. I feel that we, as med students, should put in more of an effort to show respect to others, especially those with such devastating medical conditions.

Sorry if I took your post the wrong way but I just wanted to put it out there.

His entire post was vulgar and indicative of a person who doesn't know where boundaries ought to be.

Referring to the female nurses vs female doctors, they seem to have a very different "look" to them. Even when you are comparing female medical students to female nursing students. I think I would be able to tell them apart, usually, even if they were wearing similar clothes. Anyone else have a similar observation?

Just a random "Friday afternoon with nothing to do" kind of thread.

My point wasn't to insult her. I could've put up ANY image of a person I find unattractive and someone would get offended. Would you rather I put up a picture of something else? Regardless; my post had nothing to do with insulting her but mocking the numerous comments/statements about how there's a "difference" between nurses and doctors in terms of physical appearance.

Do I know about her having a medical condition? No, absolutely not. Do I personally find her ugly? No, I don't. I'm just making fun of how people can be on this site.

I call bull. No way you could have found her pictures without any mention of her condition and it doesn't take a rocket scientist to tell that there is something medically wrong with her

🙄

google image search "ugly women"

And to say there's something wrong w/ a person because of their appearance is presumptive and insulting. Making you the bad guy. Isn't this a fun little circle?

But she's not even a doctor.... what's the point you're trying to make comparing her to hot people in nurse outfits? It's not like she's rocking a white coat and stethoscope listening to someone.

I googled "ugly women" and failed to get that image you posted. Actually, no image of that specific person popped up.

Regarding your point that assuming something is wrong with someone because of their appearance is wrong... Actually, med school has been teaching us that features like webbed neck or microencephaly or flat philtrum or rhinencephaly or asymmetry of face, etc etc might signal an underlying medical problem. Am I missing something?

I feel it is easy to distinguish between someone who looks "different" due to an underlying medical condition from someone who is simply not attractive.

that woman came up 3 times on my google search for ugly women
are you using image search

You have to be kidding me. Most men look like ass when they hit 35...their hairlines tend to recede creating a horror where once there may have been someone boyish and handsome. plenty have trouble with their bellies + chin fat; not to mention the big pores. Sure, there are exceptions but this is the rule. You're just another case of a guy conflating reality to suit what he'd love to believe.

this is true

that is why a handsome man is valued so much more than a beautiful woman. men don't have makeup to hide their imperfections. they can't hide their fat in their butt/thighs, any fat goes straight to the gut. anyone who has had a girl's body fall apart after she takes off her clothes know what i mean.

all those 9 women in the clubs look like 7s in the morning. a 9 man (no homo) will always look like a 9.

But she's not even a doctor.... what's the point you're trying to make comparing her to hot people in nurse outfits? It's not like she's rocking a white coat and stethoscope listening to someone.

Yeah, this. Are those nursing outfits? I mistook them for cheap lingerie.

You're still in the preclinical years, you wouldn't be expected to recognize nursing uniforms just yet. You've got Step I to focus on!

Not to mention, she actually isn't a doctor, so the whole post was completely irrelevant.

My point - I'm mocking. Nothing about what I said was meant to be taken serious. It was blatant mockery. This thread was started on the ridiculous idea that doctors and nurses look different, followed with physical differences, followed with insulting remarks, followed with ignorance and then stupidity. That's why I made that post. Your entire argument is irrelevant to this entire discussion (including my post).

A) You don't know how to google image search
B) Yes, you are. You're looking WAY too much into this. Do you realize how unbelievably stupid you'd sound/look if you used those features as signs of medical problems? We're not diagnosing a problem here. Stop bringing diseases into a discussion that has nothing to do with it.

I feel it is easy to distinguish between someone who looks "different" due to an underlying medical condition from someone who is simply not attractive.

Easy? Really? I didn't know your diagnostic skills were that amazing.👎

Not to mention, she actually isn't a doctor, so the whole post was completely irrelevant.

No, it was relevant to my point. You guys just don't have the common sense to see it.

Physically unattractive? Yes

Ugly? I use that only to insult people. And she doesn't deserve it.

Your usage doesn't define the word, but I do see where you're coming from. Fair enough. I still don't see what you were trying to accomplish with your original post. Mock away, but the avg. nursing student is still more attractive (edit: physically, not once they open their mouth) than the avg. medical student.

And the average dental student is more attractive than both of those combined. Even when we open our mouths 😉

Every girl becomes more attractive when she opens her mouth. As long as she's not talking.

Inb4 lotus/ansto rage - It's a joke, get over it hurr hurr.

I just don't find it a discussion that merits any thought. Nor deserving any respect. You glance through the first couple pages (before my post) and you see how demeaning/insulting people were about other staff members.

I'm not arguing either way. It's just funny that people on here can say "Yeah, I can just look at a persons' face and tell if they're a nurse or a doctor". It's along the same lines as the person that I quoted who could "easily" distinguish someone who's unattractive vs someone with a medical condition. ie; they don't know what they're talking about.

Thank you for making this thread!!!! At my school there was just something about their faces that screamed "nurse"...

Yeah nursing students just look stupid when you look at them. They just have that stupid appearance like they're not intelligent. To be fair, though, there are way more hot nursing students than med students.

However, with the hot med students, they don't have that dumb look to them. They're hot and also look intelligent. I think it has to do with the way they speak, word choice, their interests, and conversation topics. Just the way they carry themselves.

A cute med student is definitely way better than a hot nursing student. An ugly med student is worse than a hotnursing student, though. A hot med student...well obviously they're the best. I can really only say there are maybe 2 hot girls in my med student class, though. There are a few more cute ones but yea.

I definitely with most of this post. One caveat, though, is that I would say that very intelligent girls, even if not conventionally good-looking, nonetheless have a sort of intelligent and interesting look about their face that makes them more attractive than someone who is even conventionally cute. In my experience, native intelligence seems to affect the way one carries one's face. Probably for this reason, I think that smart people tend to be better looking than less intelligent people. This theory also goes a long way in explaining the preponderance of "butta-faces" among the poor (in our modern meritocratic society, people with poor impulse control, inability to delay gratification, poor school performance, terrible decision-making abilities, etc.). Anyone who has lived in a large urban area can tell you how most poor people are straight up ugly.

No actually it's pretty accurate lol. Those are just the most superficial generalizations as possible, though. Obviously tons of exceptions, but as a rule of thumb, yes it's accurate.

I think it's just the way they speak, act, and carry themselves. It becomes a lot more apparent after 3rd year when you realize you're only a med student but know a million times more than a nurse who has been working for 10+ years. It's pretty sad. I think part of it is just knowing how uneducated they are so you automatically think they're stupid in the back of your head. Would I hook up with nurses? Definitely, but I wouldn't marry one because I would just feel the marriage would be too unbalanced. I personally feel you and your spouse need to be on the same intellectual level in order to have a good marriage. I don't think only doctors are smart, but I do think most nurses are stupid either naturally or because they limited themselves in their education. The higher up you can go in education, the more you realize education level unfortunately does matter. I think doctor and most types of grad school are very compatible intellectually, with the exception of maybe something like a masters in social work.

Again, I agree with all of this. The only thing I would add, though, is that I have met (can count on my fingers) a fewnurses who have been scary smart -- basically, nurses who should have / could have been doctors, but chose to become nurses at a young age for whatever reason.

The difference is that Allnurses.com is a much funnier forum than studentdoctor.net.

Oh my god, yes. Just go over there and come back and with a straight face tell us there is no difference. I have passed many hilarious, fun filled hours over there just perusing the forums.

The stuff that's on the front pages of allnurses makes the allo forum look like Shakespeare.

I also love all the threads debating the merits of various online schools....

All this coming from someone who loves and respects nurses! I've met some seriously amazing nurses -- but the thing is, when you meet one, you are like, "HOLY CRAP YOU ARE AN AMAZING NURSE". And THOSE nurses hate all of the other nurses because they have to pick up all the slack -- I've seen it played out on a million different wards.
