Quick background:
3 years at a state university in NY, leaving with a 2.7 due to a crappy freshman year/4 major changes.
About to spend 2 years at a private school in VT getting my AS in radiography.
Going to spend another 2 years getting my BS in biology after that.
Hoping to get 4.0s in each program but we'll see how that goes.

What I'm asking is... if any prompt or interview question asks to explain bad grades, do you give them a heap of crap about family issues/personal drama/etc, or do you straight up tell them "I was more concerned with partying, my friends and my boyfriend rather than studying and going to class" (because that's what happened to me freshman year), obviously in different wording (😉)?

I think I know my answer but curious as to what the consensus is.

a very wise professor once told me: "tell the truth and you'll have nothing to worry about"

I think it relates here....don't lie and say that you were going through a tough time if you weren't. Show the ADCOMs that you have matured and grown from your mistakes

I wouldn't say "partying." You should be honest, but not THAT honest. You should phrase it in a way that talks about maturing -- which you obviously did/will do.

I said something along the lines of, "I sucked, but then I found medicine and I stopped sucking." But you know, with more fancy language.

You can always be truthful while framing yourself in a positive light. Instead say that you lacked maturity or in my case I would say I lacked proper studying techniques. Honesty is great just make sure to make yourself look the best while being honest.

The more steep your upward trend is, the better your "excuses" will be when the interviewer asks about your low gpa
