Is it a bad sign if more than half of the faculty at a particular program trained at that program? On the one hand, I guess it means their graduates get academic positions ;) but it seems a little strange. In the particular case I'm thinking of, it may be because the program is in a small town and it's harder to recruit people to a place with fewer than 40,000 people. Or it may not be that uncommon; I've only looked at the faculty lists for a couple of programs so far. Any thoughts? Or any other ideas about how to get an idea of the quality of the faculty (in terms of academics/research, which I know often doesn't correlate with teaching ability) at a specific program?
