Tucom 2007!!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Orientation is Wednsday August 6 and classes begin Monday August 11.

Happy Birthday Brenda. Today (15) is my birthday. My wife gave birth to our little girl on April 4. See weighed 6 lbs 15 oz and was 18 inches long.

The giants stadium is one of the best. Every seat is a good seat and there are multiple ways to get to the games without driving.

Justin

Justin: Congrats on the new baby!

All: I haven't heard anything about my financial aid, yet. Think I oughta call or give it another week?

Congratulations Justin! What did you name your daughter?

I hope you had a good birthday, mine was great! When are you moving into the area? We will have to get together once you relocate so that you can meet some of the other 2007's.

Zippy, I would call and make sure that your file is complete. It took about 3-4 weeks for them to process my aid once my file was finished.

may may -
Thanks for the suggestion. I am going to call them this afternoon and make sure.

Thanks again.

Closed for Passover.

Also, for those of you who are interested, I just checked the news page and the housing information for next year is now posted at http://tucom.edu/housing.htm . Hope that's helpful.

So a week ago I had dinner with Jose Cuervo and DrZippy2b, maysqrd, bhambra, SoCal and Devon, Elysium, Rob from Utah, and because I was paying too much attention to Jose I forgot to bring up the subject of old toys... and since i probably won't be writing on this post as a member of the class of 2007 anytime soon, i need to get these toys off my mind because they are taking up precious space... so do you remember:

-Lion-o, Panthro, Cheetara, Tygra, Wilykit, Wilykat, Snarf, Mumm-Raa and the rest of the Thundercats
-Scrooge McDuck, Lauchpad McQuack, GizmoDuck and the rest of the crew of Ducktales (i wish I had enough money to swim in it)
-Pirates of the Dark Water
-Silverhawks
-Captain Planet and the Planeteers
-The weak underwater spinoff of the Smurfs... the Snorks
-Popples
-M.A.S.K.
-the only thing I like better than 1800 with friends... Gummi Berri Juice
-My Pet Monster
-Monchichi, Monchichi, oh so soft and cuddly, with a thumb in the mouth...
-The Wizard starring Fred Savage who got to play Super Mario 2 for the first time
-Stompers
-"i have a great idea, lets take a monster truck and put tiger claws in the wheels.. we'll call it The Animal"
-Small Wonder
-Mr. Belvedere
-Head of the Class
-Silver Spoons
-The Punky Brewster episode that was written by a viewer where Cheri while playing hide and seek locks herself in a refridgerator and Punky performs mouth to mouth on her... moral of the story:always take the door of refridgerators that you throw away and take a CPR class
-Jambi, Cowboy Curtis (aka Morpheus), The King of Cartoons, Ms. Yvonne, Rita the Mail Lady and the rest of the crew of PeeWee's Playhouse (wish?? did I hear somebody say wish?? http://www.geocities.com/Hollywood/Bungalow/5153/jambi.html)

thats it guys.. so in addition to knowing the ins and outs of Touro, I also know a bunch of other garbage.. surprise surprise

have a great rest of the week everyone!

I'm still confused about housing...is it our responsibility to contact Touro or will we receive something in the mail about it?

Justin, thanks for confirmation on the Giants stadium.....I really want to see that field! I don't care what team is playing, I just like sports. Something about the atmosphere that's refreshing. Congrats on daddy-hood. Wow. And Happy Birthday!!!

Hey, where are you guys getting the Fall calendar from? Am I missing something?!

Brian.....oh my goodness, the Punky Brewster episode where that girl got locked in the fridge.....you remember that?!!! I thought I was the ONLY one! It's the only episode that I can remember the plot, but it's always stuck in my head. Even as a kid I was the oddball who was obssessed with "medical" stuff like suffocating in a fridge. Glad to know there are others like me out there! Haha. You're the best. Thanks for the memories.

Happy Passover or Holy Week to all of you🙂

~Teri

...the tequila was good!!

Hi All,

I am so excited!! The next time you will all see me I will have my braces off!   😀

I get them off in three weeks and I CAN"T WAIT! then I can finally eat an apple, popcorn, carrots, celery sticks, tortilla chips, candy, nuts......

We are supposed to use 010142 right?

Maymay: what are you going to eat first?

Teri: I think you should go ahead and contact them. You can never be in the wrong when you are being proactive. Just tell them you saw that it was posted on the web and were wondering what was the next step. The worst they can do is tell you to wait for information to be sent to you. I doubt that would be their response. I continue to be amazed at how responsive the TUCOM staff is to the students.

BTW: Don't know if I mentioned that I dislocated my shoulder a couple weeks back, or not. I just got back the MRI results and **ouch**. They gave me a copy of the reading from the radiologist. Kinda cool, actually. The doc emailed me an "advanced" copy (he knows I'll be headed to school this year) and I had to get out dictionary to figure out what heck those bigs words were. It was interesting, tough, because I did my research and then talked to him about it when I had my appointment. They are planning on erring on the conservative side and seeing what PT can do, but the doc told me that he's going to give it eight weeks and then see about sending me to the orthopaedic surgeons. I told him, that was all fine and good, but I need to be ready to go by Aug 6th. On a side note, I really saw the entire office visit from a different view.

Happy Easter! Hope the Easter Bunny is good to you this year.

Zippy, 010142 is correct. Make sure you didn't use the old E000 code.

As for you shoulder, make sure you ask them how long the rehab would be if you needed to have surgery. My ankle rehab was 9 months and that was the main reason I went straight to surgery instead of going the conservative route (like I had done already for 16 years). I was afraid that if I didn't fix it before going to med school that I would end up hurting it during med school and that would just totally wipe me out of my classes.

I know I made the right decision because after experiencing what I went thru, there is absolutely NO WAY I could have done that while trying to go to school. I was in on crutches for 6-weeks and in a cast for 3 months! The general rule of them is that for every day you're in a cast or restricted from moving your muscles, it will take four days of rehab to get back to where you were before your surgery, both strength AND definately energy wise. Goodluck.

And the first thing I am going to eat is a big red juicy apple!!

We are almost ready for our big move! My husband just found out that he has been hired at the VA on the island, we close this weekend on our house and we will head out May 10th. Do any of you in the area happen to have any kennel recommendations? We will need to kennel our 2 dogs while we are house hunting. I can?t wait to meet all of you!

Terra

We named her Ericka Faye.

Were still deciding when to move. Maybe late June or July.

I submitted my aid back in February but I used the wrong code. They contacted me around the first week of April and said they had received my federal stuff. Now I'm just waiting for them to send something back to me.

Justin

Who are you all choosing as your lender for the Stafford loans? TUCOM's finaincial aid people seem to be partial to the Access Group...they have no origination fee, where most other lenders have the typical 3% fee. Anyone with any more info?

Do you have a website for them?

What about Sallie Mae?

I do have their website...but I have been talking to them rather than using the site....I guess I should check that too. I have heard of Sallie Maye, but they are not on the preffered lender list...which I guess probably does not mean much.

http://www.tulane.edu/~finaid/stafford03-04.shtml

Kenny,
I think that the schools all have their "preferred list" that they have worked with before. I don't think that equates to the best loan deal that's out there for each student. This is a website set up by Tulane that has great links to each of the loan providers. There are some that have no loan origination fees and no garantee fees. I think the most common loan origination fees are about 3% (which is taken from the loan. Example: You take a loan for $100, only $97 is disbursed from the loan, but you still owe on $100 and pay interest on the entire loan amount.)

This is a pretty comprehensive list.

By the way, did you guys get your apt?

Hope the website helps!

Nikki

not sure if any of you have Instant Messenger, but my screen name is Pittsy79

🙂

Thanks Nikki...
Yeah, we got approved for both places...we dont want to move in until the middle of July since we will be traveling around a lot. Have a good day. KEN

Hi guys,

I got my loan package a few weeks ago and they gave me a preferred list for the stafford loans and the private loans.

TUCOM's list includes AAMC, Access Group, BofA, Wells Fargo (which is now called MedCap or something like that), MED Solutions (only for stafford, not for private loans) and Citibank. Many of these are going with no origination fee and no guarantee fee but there may be fees at repayment based on credit rating, etc. You can go with anyone that you choose, this is just the list that the school recommends.

Remember to check the aggregate loan limits with some of these borrowers if you already have undergraduate loans because most financial aid people don't tell you that undergrad loans are usually included in the lifetime aggregate limits!

I went with the Access Group for the private loans that I will need to take out and applied online. My loan was approved in 30 seconds! Yippee, I have enough money to pay my bills next year!!

Here is the list of web addresses:

I know how dangerous assumptions can be, but does everyone else assume that the orientation does not truly begin on Sunday the 3rd, but really Wednesday the 6th?

Thanks, maymay. I talked to Mr. Nolen and they are sending out my information, so I should have all my loan stuff taken care of next week.

Oh, yeah. And we start moving into our condo next Tuesday! I am so excited. I can't wait. Although **looks around to make sure no one is listening** I will secretly miss the kid. 😱

Hello everybody.... School is about to start... I am getting really nervous, but at the same time really excited.. Currently I am busy working my ass off as a car salesman for Fremont Toyota to make some extra money so I can buy you all alcohol on the first day of school... heheheh No I am not a heavy drinker.. I drink occasionally.. So, if any of you or your friends and family need a toyota, please send them my way.. ehhehehe Well, I still have not heard back from the financial aid department yet about my loan package. I am kinda worry.. I dunno.. They took our money and the school don't even exist.. I know there was something wrong with the school when they sent me the acceptance letter.. HHhehehhe Just Kidding. Oh yeah my aim SN is Jimily143 so drop me a line if you want to chat.. Arite talk to all of you later.. bye bye

Hey everyone. It's nice to still see other tucom 2007s posting on this thread. Thanks for the loan link Zippy. Thanks for the schedule link mohody. Hey Jimily143 just beg potential buyers and say "please by this car from me! I need to buy top ramen to get thru school!" The starving student line works a lot.

p.s. Jimily143 and mohody, if you both check back a couple of pages on this thread, you'll see that some of us posted a little backgroud info about ourselves. The floor's open....🙂

has anyone received any information on housing from tucom? they said we would start getting information in march and it is almost may now......

nope, I haven't received anything from housing yet...I'm hoping to get something soon. All I know is that the forms are on-line and they will begin accepting the contract for on-campus housing starting May 5th.

Happy Thursday!

I check the mailbox every day hoping for some kind of correspondence, mainly just to pinch myself so that I will be reminded that it is real and I am really going to med school in August. But from what I remember, TUCOM generally doesn't like to correspond via snail mail. They prefer email and I think that they are just waiting to get our email list-serve up and running for Class of 2007 to be able to start getting us all of our information.

If I am not mistaken, this week or next week should be the last of the interviews and hopefully that will help clear some time for the admissions office to get our email list up and running.

The housing information is available on the housing webpage so everyone can download that right now. The only piece of information that is not listed on the housing contract or handbook is the cost of the meal plan for the dorm students. I called Shantel in housing and asked about the pricing but they don't have a contract yet so until they negotiate a final price with the vendor, they won't be able to pass along that information to us.

Hey everyone! I hope you all don?t mind me barging into your thread, but I wanted to introduce myself to you all because I will be joining the fun with you next year at TUCOM. Before I begin, I just wanted to thank you for all the information and discussions in this thread-they were all very helpful. Here?s my info:

Born: Bombay, India?but raised in Richland, WA and then onto Southern CA. I forgot who's from Seattle but I must say it is one of the coolest cities (although that's when I was 13--it may have changed by now.

Current Residence: Maryland (Grad school brought me to the East Coast and I decided to stick around for another year)

Employment: Post-graduate fellow at the US Army Center for Health Promotion and Preventive Medicine

Hobbies: Watching, playing sports (I?m a big Mariners fan so I?ll be up for an A?s-Mariners game, ahem Maysqrd); playing foosball; I want to pick up golf as well, cooking, etc.

Favorite movie: The Matrix (I?m fired up for the sequels coming out!)

Enough about me though?I noticed some questions about lenders. When I went to grad school I used Total Higher Education (T.H.E.) Loan Program. They didn?t have any initial fees and I don?t believe they had any when it came to repayment (although I may be wrong about the latter). I?m in repayment now and have not been charged any to my knowledge. They have a website: www.northstar.org

Anyways it was nice reading brief descriptions about you all and I look forward to seeing you in August (or corresponding until then)!
😀

TUCOM has setup the TUCOM2007 group at yahoo.com. I guess we should all join.

mohody:

I just checked the site and couldn't find it....I must be looking in the wrong spot. Where did you see the link for 2007?

Thanks!

Can you guys post a link, please? I am on the site and can't find it.

Thanks, Zippy

OK, so I found the sight on yahoo. What are you guys using for screen names?

Just wondering.

Thanks!
Z

Are you guys planning to join AMSA, SOMA, AMA or AOA? If so, which ones and when can we join?

Someone posted concerning certain benefits if you are an AMA member. I was thinking about joining (it's 68 bucks for a four year med student membership). Thoughts?

Have a great Friday!

I think we get a free membership in the AOA as students. I have a copy of a letter from the AOA that was included with my acceptance letter from TUCOM.

BTW, I have the same user name in the yahoo groups: maysqrd

so do people know when we are supposed to submit the housing contract? it really does not say much but it would be nice to know of any strict deadlines. please let me know. thanks.

...hey guys...I signed up for that yahoo thing too, although I am not sure really what it is. My name is mediku07 (something like that) Did anyone figure out what the deal is with the orientation dates? Have a great weekend. KEN`

Kenny TUCOM fixed the date on their website. Orientation is August 6.

Justin

I signed up for the yahoo group also. My ID is lombok22002.

Hey AKS57. I'm the one from Seattle and I must tell you it hasn't changed much. It is a very nice city and I enjoy going to lots of Mariner games at Safeco. Whenever they play the A's, I'll be up for those games.

I'm with UCLA....what deadlines for housing should we follow?
We can download the info. but we can't send anything in until we hear from the school, right?

AKS57....welcome aboard! What's your favorite thing to cook?!

Hey, are any of you interviewing for the NHSC scholarship program?

Zippy, what kinds of benefits come out of AMA membership? Maysqrd is right....we get a free ride into AOA stuff.

Do we still get to order our own scrubs?

~Teri

glorytaker, do you remember (or know) if there are any events during orientation that family members are asked to be a part of?

And for on-campus housing, when is the earliest we can move in?

Thanks!

also, let me point out how we are rockin' this forum....we've had over 3000 views (no other category comes close!) and 159 replies to this post! 😀

glorytaker,

Someone recently posted on the osteopathic forum in response to a post about rotations for 3rd year at Touro that there was a "rumor" that a new contract with a hospital (CPMC?) had been "lost" and left 16 students who had matched with that hospital scrambling for spots. Do you know anything about that situation?

Thanks

Terra

Looks like I am blocked from the Yahoo site from work. So for now, I can't get on. Hopefully I will have internet connection at the house soon, so I can log on there.

Dr. Zippy, I hate to say it but I don't think the yahoo problem is your internet. I am blocked too, and when I tried to rejoin, I was "denied by the moderator." I tell you, this is beginning to turn into a saga! We still have yet to hear from Tucom and now our one source of communication has been busted! I'm sure they will fix it with time, however. (At least I hope so!)

Well, we have made it to May!

glorytaker, is there internet connection in the on-campus housing?
