TUCOM - CA Discussion thread 2007-2008

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
this might be slightly off topic..but does anyone know where current students live? on my last visit i wasnt exactly taken with the Vallejo / mare island area...is living in san francisco doable? i only ask because I have some friends that live near Nob Hill and I could probably split an apartment with them...not sure how the commute is though..

I lived in SF for part of my first year. I lived very close to 80, so it was easy to get on Bay Bridge. Took me about 45min-55min in the AM. In the afternoons, I learned to avoid the bridge from 5:30-7:00p, as traffic during that time sucked!

A friend of mine did the ferry for a while. The ferry is a nice, albeit expensive option. You can look at the schedule on-line - (google: Vallejo, Baylink ferry).

Other folks lived on other side of SF, close to Golden Gate and commuted through Marin. This is about 50min, but there's less traffic coming home in afternoon, so it a reliable 50 min.

No matter what you do, it's a substantial commute, but it is possible if you really want to live in SF. Having a carpool makes it much less expensive.

My advice if you really love SF, would be to split the difference, live in Berkeley, Albany or El Cerrito. It's more like a 20-25 min commute to school, and you're only a 15 min drive into SF.

Wow, I really wasn't expecting that... especially after I thought my interview went really well. Anyone know what a Medium waitlist means? What are my chances now, and when do people start getting pulled off it?

THe letter says that ppl start getting pulled off in June and i recall dr. haight saying how most high waitlist candidates get pulled off thewaitlist and sometimes they even go into themedium waitlist as well so theres hope just keep updating them with ur new info and hopefully ull get in somehwere else in the meantime and not even have to worry about touro-ca....good luck

Wow. Does that mean there is no room in the class anymore.

I wouldn't do it. you're easily looking at considerably longer than an hour commute each way, not to mention $8 in bridge toll every day, and $3.50/gallon gas. you're going against traffic, but you still gotta get through the city. that said, there are people that do it. and if you can afford the ferry (something like $300 a month), that would be even better, because it's 2 hours of study time a day!

you don't get much to live on with loans. I live 3 miles from campus and barely get gas twice a month. extra money means more money to do fun things and not sit in traffic!

yay i finally got my invite! the mail was just really slow 🙂

Hey guys/gals. I just confirmed my interview date today, its on Jan 22nd. I really wanted to interview before New Years, hopefully a place will open up. Does anyone know how many seats are filled to date? Also from what I've heard TUCOM interviews 400-425 people and about 280 get accepted, and 130 marticulate, is this accurate?

This is my first choice school and this waiting game is killing me. Good luck to all of you.

is anyone interviewing at all? Seems like the this thread is dead, or is there another one I don't know of?

I just got an interview invite to TOURO-CA today. When I immigrated to the States 12 years ago, I first lived in Albany, California for four years before I moved to Texas. So I would love to go to this school and get in touch with my childhood memories. However, I feel the plane tickets are going to be really expensive since it's pretty close to the holidays.

Another UT guy on here got accepted there. Named "hookem".

Not sure where he decided to go though.

My aunt and uncle live out there (uncle is a microbiologist at Stanford), and they know about the school, and seem to think they do a pretty solid job.

That's really awesome news, thanks alot TT. I read alot of messages and threads, and I think they're wonderful and inspiring. Congrats again on getting into GA-PCOM!! I know it's a really good school.

So I interview on Jan. 29, which is the earliest they have. Is anybody in the same boat?

i got in today! yea!

good luck to everyone waiting =)

anyone know of any cheap hotels in SF? i'm planning to spend a day or two out there before the interview..

Just got an invite for Feb 4 (earliest they had)!

I was up in SF earlier this year for vacation and I stayed at the Mosser Hotel for $69-79/night, which is super cheap for SF. It was on Market & 4th in the Union sq area and the hotel was very clean with ikea-ish decor. The downside? Shared bathroom (but it was clean and we didn't have any sharing problems with anyone!). I highly recommend it if you're on a budget.

I am interviewing on Jan 22, anyone interviewing with me?
is anyone driving up there from LA the night before the interview?
i am still deciding whether to go with the marriot deal or just drive up there the night before:idea:

Is it true that only a few available acceptance spots are open?

I also have an interview on Jan 22nd. I have not decided if I am going to drive (from LA) or just fly to SF. I am looking for an earlier date, so if anyone is going to cancel their interview please let me know.

Are the acceptance spots really getting full? I thought that was around Feb./March ? Anyone who interviewed lately, can you shine some light on this?

Good luck to everyone!

Touro Nevada is now my first choice. I still want to use Mare Island as a backup. If someone wants to decline acceptance at Mare Island, I heard they can switch with someone from the waitlist. Can someone please PM me if this is true, and you want to decline acceptance?

I saw this article about Touro's ambitious plans for the new Particle Therapy Center. Might be of interest to some.

Cool, a combined particle beam therapy using proton beam and heavy carbon ions to treat cancers. If this gets done, I feel Touro-CA will be one of the leading facilities with cutting edge technology cancer resources just like MD Anderson Cancer Center. I hope Touro-CA will start on this project soon.

I guess i will see you there on Jan 22^^ Dr. Shot
i am also deciding on driving up from LA or flying... i think i am going to drive
they already start waitlisting people? are you kidding me =(

This thread is almost dead.

Doing Compressions... *CLEAR* ~shock~ *CLEAR*

I was wondering what kind of questions do they ask at the interview beside the ones that posted on the interview feedbacks. Does anybody have any personal experiences?

The only word to describe Touro interview questions is: RANDOM. It think this is because they really are wanted to have a conversation with you, not to play twenty questions. They want a sense of who you are, in the personal way that you can only get talking facing to face.

Examples:

I see that you went to College at Central Nebraska University. What did you do there when you weren't studying?

Tell me what you like about osteopathic medicine, without using the word "whole."

I see here you spent two months in West Siberia last summer with some kind of program, what was that like?

You grades took a nose drive in the second semester of your Sophomore year of college, what was gong on for you at that time?

I know you've never been here before, but what do you think of Vallejo and Mare Island?

Why medicine? Do you have any area of medicine that you're already leaning towards?

I see you flew all the way from Oklahoma for this interview, how was your flight?

Some say that America is facing an imminent health care crisis of rising costs and 40 million people uninsured. What do you think about this problem and what do you think should be done about it?

These are not necessarily all examples from my own interview, or other classmates I've spoken too, but my point is that you basically have no way of knowing what they are going to ask. There will be very casual, friendly questions mixed with questions that no one has the answer to.

They are trying to get to know you. And get to know you in a specific context. The Interview is a stressful situation, how does this person respond to stress? (Very important in medicine.) How good are your people-skills and ability to communicate (critical in medicine.)

I don't think anyone is trying to make it more stressful, but let's face it, we are all a little nervous. Don't let this get the better of you. Relax. Be confident. Be yourself. It's fine to be passionate & enthusiastic, but don't get emotional. There's no one right answer to these questions. They just want to hear you speak and think. Think of it as a conversation. A somewhat formal, profession conversation. But not an interrogation.

Hope this is helpful.

Bryan

Thanks for the help Bryan. I will definitely take it with every grain of salt.

anyone else interviewing tomorrow? Vallejo is fairly boring, but i'm happy i spent some time in SF this past weekend, it's one of my favorite cities now!

so i'm taking no one else interviewed today? I came into the interview a bit blasse, but can honestly say I was very impressed by the opportunities available at touro. The group interview wasn't daunting at all, a bit interesting .

Hey superfan, I also interviewed at Touro CA on the 11th. Are you the guy who stayed with family in Oakland? Like you, I came into the interview with somewhat of a negative mindset, after seeing all the horrible posts in the interview feedbacks and the idea of a group interview. However, I ended up really liking the school. Our tour guide was really enthusiastic and the campus wasn't nearly as bad as everyone described it to be. Good luck on Friday!

You guys that interview recently, anything to share about the current status of the class size? or any other helpful info? thanks

It's too late. Everyone that has interviews might as well give all hopes and dreams to attending this school.

Did anyone on here interview Dec. 3rd? If so have you heard anything? I am trying to not be obsessively glued to my computer today but I thought we were supposed to hear today! I’m trying to remember that it is still only 8:30 Ca time! Ya for trying to be positive!

I thought you were posting to say you heard something. ugh/

Sorry I got your hopes up superfan. They did say that they would email us today though right? I thought I remembered him saying he had a standing meeting with the dean at like 8am every other friday so I was hoping we would hear sometime this morning.

Congrats! Me too! Hooorraayyyyy. My first acceptance so I am soooo relieved. Have a great weekend everyone 🙂

Yipppeee.....I'm in too guys! This is also my first acceptance....feels great. Congrats to everyone! 😀

there really isn't anything better than your first acceptance....congrats!

Seriously.....but it's been a traumatic day for me. I waited all day until 1pm to get the email, not realizing that it had been sitting in my bulk email all along....since 8am.

really? i was checking like crazy, got up at 7:30 just to see if they sent it, didn't get it till 1PM. Either way, it ended up exactly how I felt at the end of the interview. So, kudos. Are you going to fork out the 2k?

Yup. I am waiting to hear from Touro-NY, should hear from them by Wednesday at the latest. If I get into NY, I also have to fork over an additional 2K....my fiance interviewed at SUNY Upstate (Allopathic) and has not heard back from them and we need to keep all our options open. I am also interviewing at Western COMP on the 20th and that is my #1 school. In the end, I will just put down a deposit for all the schools I get into and decide after I find out where my fiance gets in. This has been a VERY costly application cycle.

Is the $2k deposit refundable? I got the impression that it isn't. I'm going to put it down, but doing that for multiple schools must be expensive!!!😱😱

It's not refundable. 🙁 But my fiance and I need to keep all our options open until we find out where both of us will be going.
