TUCOM - CA Discussion thread 2007-2008

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Thanks! That's really helpful info. I was wondering though, because it's a group interview, do they ever ask the same question to all or some of the students? Like "why DO or why medicine"? For instance, would they go down the line and ask the "why DO" question to each candidate? It seems like it might get slightly redundant, but I guess that can happen in a group interview format.

Also, do they give you a chance to ask questions about the school, during the group interview? Or is it strictly interviewers asking questions and we just save the questions for later? How important is it to come with questions, for the interview portion?

They do ask the same questions to a few of interviewees, not all. Don't stress out to much about it, I did in the begining but overall its pretty laid back.

Definitely have some questions ready to ask them. They give you like 5-10 minutes at the end to ask questions.

the tour is before the interview, so you can gather an idea of how things work before your interview and ask them after as dr. shot said. DEF ask questions. mine was actually posed at the student interviewer and her studies at Touro.

Keep in mind the "why DO" thing. in my interview, none of the other interviewees had even shadowed a DO and just from my experience with friends that either graduated from or are attending Touro, it's still a backup for a lot of allopathic and osteopathic CA residents and they know this. So just have something good prepared and you can back this up.

I was speaking to my brother in law's brother in law (does that make sense?) who is a sieman's rep and he was telling me about this machine.

Lol. Yes, it sounds confusing at first, but it makes sense. So what did he say about the combined particle beam?

does anybody know the average price of a 2 bedroom house/apartment to rent in the area?

Try looking on craigslist maybe? It depends on where you want to live. I've heard Vallejo isn't the best of areas, so housing may be cheaper there, but there are also some nicer places not too far away, for example, Napa is only 20-30min, but is likely to be much more expensive.

Cool, I've always wanted to go to Napa. But, I've heard it is the most expensive real estate in the country! I live in Alabama so everything there will seem expensive to me!

Haha nice, well I'm coming from Manhattan, so everything there seems relatively cheap to me, or comparable at the very least. I'm sure with a bit of digging though you'll be able to find somewhere nice that's not too expensive 🙂

Where my homies at? We're so gonna rock on Monday! TUCOM-CA here we come.

can any current touro-CA students talk about how happy the students are in general? just the ambiance? I interviewed there and the campus surroundings were a bit depressing... but the few students i saw seemed very nice and friendly... can anyone shed some more light about the general atmosphere, student happiness etc?

also.. what is your monday-friday schedule like first and second semester?

thanks!

can anyone please tell me what is the main differences between western and touro CA?

pros and cons?

Just relax, the staff members are really nice. Goodluck! 👍

Thanks guys! I'm at the Marriott right now. I just got in. I checked out the school and yes, it is pretty scary and depressing. But, I'm glad I was forewarned by other SDNers, so at least I was prepared. I'm trying to hold off my judgment until my interview tomorrow. It's my first one, so it's nerve-wracking but I'm trying to be in the mindset of "what can this school do for me". Anyway, we'll see how it goes! 😀

The school environment and surrroundings are not as bad as people say they are. Touro-CA is located where an old navy base used to be. I guess it's pretty "scary" because there are some abandoned warehouses, but I don't see what's wrong with those. If anything, there is a rich history and historical landmarks for people to apperciate. Touro University located in Mare Island will be adding a village center for students and the vallejo community to seek medical care, a state-of-the-art and very expensive cancer center with the first combined proton and carbon cancer beam in the States, a hotel for the new medical center, and some other awesome facilities. Plus, the school is near the Pacific Ocean, so it feels pretty breezy. Oh yeah, I heard Touro Univeristy used to be located in San Francisco, but the area limited its ability to expand and grow so that's why they moved it to Mare Island. I think Mare Island is a peaceful and tranquil place to study medicine for the first two years, and then one could move after that if one chose to do so. The bad thing about the school is it's small and pretty pricey with $35,000/year in tuition; however, that's not bad compared to other high priced osteopathic medical schools. The plus side to that is that it's by San Fran, which is an amazing place to visit and enjoy the scenary. Last but not least, there are plenty of research of oppornunities if one chooses to follow that route, which is seldom for an osteopathic school since most osteopathic schools are primary-care based, and it has one of the highest matching results for medical schools (this means most students get their choices of hospitals/medical centers/clinics, and notice I didn't just say osteopathic medical schools to be PC).

I'm fascinated by all of the reviews that make Touro sound like a ghost town. What isn't there to like? The campus has a certain beautiful charm to it. There is a complete lack of any crappy commercial chains around it. Instead, there are a bunch of cool, old historical buildings. Mare Island itself is in the middle of San Pablo Bay. The Marin Headlands are only a short drive away as are the Berkeley Hills. I honestly cannot think of many schools with a better location (especially metropolitan schools). I have to say that I am stoked to be starting at Touro, but maybe it's just Bay-Area bias...

During the interview we were also told about construction at the entrance to the island (not the cancer building) - will that be done anytime soon... or will that take a couple years also?

Interview in the morning.

Anyone else?

🙂

:luck:Go in there and slam dunk the interview! Good Luck!:luck:

the silence is deafening... they meet tomorrow.. i wanna know TOMORROW!

Thanks for the well wishes! The interview went well (I think).

Nobody should EVER be nervous about interviewing there. Everyone is so open and nice. 🙂 Good luck to those of you who are being reviewed tomorrow!

Best of luck everyone!!! The staff and students are so friendly! Have a wonderful day!!!🙂🙂🙂

We had the same interview date. Oh man, I am nervous. Goodluck!

they are making there decisionssss........

You know, I thought applying was the worst thing ever.

It's really not.

It's the waiting.

you guys are serious? the usual 3-4 day turnaround time for touro is the BEST thing about them. Try waiting 6-8 weeks as I have been for other schools!

its definitely a short turn around.. but just knowing that we're going to hear by tomorrow - makes it harder to be patient..

exactly! haha i've been feeling anxious all day. hopefully we'll all get good news 🙂

Hey guys,

As a first year, Touro rocks. I'd like to reiterate the sentiments of others on the website about the area; it's hard to beat. As for the old school buildings, I remember being in your shoes last year and thinking wtf? But to be honest, the little I see of the island (just drive thru), it does have a certain charm to it, as opposed to our strip-mall neighbors to the south. The history is insane as well.

As for living, Napa is a little far. I started looking at property in Napa before matriculating and decided against the drive. As for Vallejo, not even almost. That being said, most students are content (and you can't beat the commute). The nicer areas for consideration are Benicia and Glen Cove (both 15 minutes) area (technically Vallejo but not).

Lastly, as for the cirriculum, I think they've ironed out the kinks (our own classmates should be applauded for this as well) and I am very pleased with how its been going this semester. I wish all of you the best of luck and if you have any questions, feel free to PM me and I'll do my best to answer them.

nearly forgot, my initial intention of responding the pre-osteo forum: Be complementary to your fellow interviewers. Do not underestimate the impression that gives off. Furthermore, send thank you notes. I had one anatomy professor that had a list of people who wrote thank you notes. Not sure what he plans on doing with them....but just to be safe 👍

oh, and relax. You're so money you don't even know it.

hi all,

good news...i am going to cancel my interview which was scheduled to be this coming tuesday Jan 22nd...

hopefully that help one of you guys getting an earlier interview...

before i do that, can anyone please give me a telephone number to call cuz i lost my papers...

Is Touro-CA your top choice?

It's in my top 3.

And yes, I realize the turnaround time is excellent, and I'm certainly grateful for it. It is just VERY nerve wracking, no matter if it's a month or a few days.

i guess its still a bit early on the west coast....

I didn't send a thank you note. because i interviewed on a tuesday and the committee met on a thursday, so either way they would not have even gotten a thank you note until after i had my decision in hand...

That's not the point of a thank you note...

Thank you note does not equal admission, thank you note means thank you. It's a polite, respectful gesture.

its already 2:30... anyone know when previous people have found out...

Im in!!!! 🙂

yay just got the email! i am so excited 😀

Yay!!! I've been accepted! It's my first one! I'm gonna be a doctor! Woohoo!!! :hardy: 😀:biglove:

I got the e-mail on my cell phone while I was stepping out of the disney store on 5th avenue in NYC!

I'M SO EXCITED!

I'm not sure if I'll go there yet, but I know now that I"m GOING to be a doctor and that is SO exciting!

This is my first acceptance! waaaaaaaaaahooooooooooooooooo!

CONGRATULATIONS EVERYBODY!

😍😀😎:horns::banana::biglove:

i have canceled my interview, good luck to you all

Way to go guys! Superfan? We're waiting out here!
Good luck to you!

Congrats to those who got in. I'm SO JEALOUS!

sorry didn't see you were accepted 12/14. thought you were in on last round of interviews...

congrats to you belatedly!🙄:hello:

I wish that we could know more about how successful the Harlem school will be... because I would love to be in NYC. On the flip side, I know how Touro-CA students do, and it seems that they all place well in residency. When I took a tour, we were told that "of all the residency matches 40% get into allopathic residencies".... Any thoughts on this?
