Hey guys, I just set up my interview on April 1. Am I too late ? Is anyone else gonna be there on this date? I love the area, and I have tons of relatives who live around the Bay area. How many spots are left?

One more question. I really want to become a surgeon. Do you think this is a good school to prepare me for that? Thanks

You're not too late but your are late. It will affect your admission a little since I assume most of the seats have already been filled. I've got an interview at Midwestern on April 8th and frankly I'm not expecting much from it. Touro-CA doesn't release info on their class status. Touro-CA is a great school but I think for surgery you'd want to look more into allopathic schools as it is very competitive to get such a residency. I'm sure this school can provide all the best education you'd need and of course it's ultimately up to the student; but it's just how the system works.
 
Ok I have another question. Do they require you to absolutely have 2 behavioral science classes? I am invited for an interview even though I don't have any classes that satisfy that category, and I already graduated last year. I am not taking any class right now, and I did not list any future class on my application. Does anyone know anything about this?

If they've already invited you for an interview then your classes were all fine for them and you meet the basic requirements. Basically if you are being interviewed then they find your application good enough to be admitted, but now they want to see how you do under a little bit of stress. At least thats really what I thought the interview was testing. The best thing I can tell you is take an honest look at your application and know what your weaknesses are. You can't really be prepared for this given the random questions they can ask sometimes but try to give concrete examples from your application/or related to it. Smile, relax and be confident in your responses.

Ok another question. How do I find out who the interviewers will be? I want to do a little be research about them before hand.

i got accepted to both western and tucom-ca, i know its all about location location and location, but western was very transparent with their comlex first-time passing rates.

since i am leaning towards tucom, i was wondering if anyone knows their comlex first time passing rate?

I wanted to do the same but only thought of it the weekend before my interview. I would try calling admissions and just politely ask who the interviewers will be.
 
I didn't really like the interview. The whole time I felt like the interviewers were sleepy and not really paying attention to what I was saying. I feel like they already pretty much knew who they wanted before even doing the interviews. Anyway, interviews suck. They can't possibly know what kind of person you are in that brief amount of time. For people who BS it's good, but for people like me who are probably a little too honest it's bad.

my fiance is assyrian. do you have family in modesto like all the other assyrians from chicago? if so, you probably can keep in touch with family and friends in modesto if you go to tucom-ca.
 
I'm pretty sure you guys are starting at the beginning of august with orientation starting around the 4th or 5th of august.

Hey ya'll. I am withdrawing my acceptance at Touro-MI. My fiance and I were both accepted to Western. I hope this helps people on the wait list. Good luck everyone!

**Too bad I can't withdraw the $2K I had to give to Touro to hold my seat. Sigh...**

Have you tried calling the office of admissions? The folks there are really nice. I sort of doubt if anyone here is going to know exactly when they stop interviewing. Good luck!!!

I personally don't like the sound of that. Seems like UCSF is trying to take over, IMHO. This particular quote concerns me:

I thought that since this project is the idea of Touro originally. That means Touro must have qualified staff with good enough license and expertise. And since this will be the first of the kind in the nation who's to say that UCSF people is more qualified than Touro people. If I am wrong, please enlighten me.

I can understand your response to reading that UCSF will take over the clinical operations of this cancer center. However, the fact remains that simply having the idea to build does not necessitate having the resources to take full advantage of the type of research and treatments this new cancer center will open up for the medical community. Again, I'm sure Touro could have staffed the center and ran it, but having a giant like UCSF come in here is a smart move in my opinion and will make the most of the center. This does not lower the status of those who are already a part of Touro, instead, we will now have a chance to first learn and then work along side people who have had the funding to run many other pioneering research projects for decades before TUCOM was even founded. Just as a tid bit, UCSF founded its department of experimental oncology in 1947.

On another note, how did your interview go Chargers, any news yet?

Who is to say that UCSF people are more qualified than Touro people? Well, let's ask a few basic questions about UCSF's and Touro's respective qualifications.

How many oncologists does UCSF currently employ? Hundreds.
Touro? Zero.

How many research publications related to cancer research have UCSF researchers published? Thousands.
Touro? Zero.

How many cancer patients did USCF treat last year? Thousands.
Touro? Zero.

How much NIH & grant money does UCSF's cancer research centers receive each year? Hundreds of millions of dollars.
Touro? Zero. Touro doesn't have a cancer research center. Touro doesn't have an oncology department. Touro doesn't employ an oncologist.

Does that help a bit?

In all fairness, I thought it may be important to say what Touro does bring to the table.

#1 Money - Bernard Lander and his buddies are putting up many millions of private funds to build this thing.

#2 A supportive City & City Council - Huge cancer research centers don't get built without a supportive local political environment. Vallejo really wants this thing.

#3 Land - Mare Island is a big, largely undeveloped place that has languished badly since the Navy left 20+ years ago. The perfect spot for a large research campus in a geographical region (Bay Area) with very little open space left.

I hear you on the suspicion of politics. But, really, UCSF's interest in this project is really a huge plus for Touro, for the center, and everyone. Collaboration is the name of the game in this field.

Consider too that Touro has struggled to place its 3rd and 4th year students in rotation sites within the Bay Area. This is in part because the whole system is controlled by UCSF, who sort of locks Touro students out. This kind of cooperation may relax that a bit, and initiate a relationship that could really benefit Touro students down the road.

If you have ever dealt directly with the admin of Touro, you would have to agree. I'd much rather deal with UCSF politics than Touro politics. Ask any Touro student in their 3rd and 4th year. The Touro admin is a pack of *#$#* thieves. I love Touro students and Touro faculty, but the admin . . . well, don't even get me started.

This relationship can only benefit Touro students and faculty.

Hi Everyone. After completing interviews and being at TUCOM-MI, I really think this is school for me. There is just one catch; I am on the medium waitlist. I am sure its because of my lack of DO connection (as my application is better versed towards allopathic programs or graduate research programs) but I am sure I want DO and TUCOM.

Now I know that you can submit additional information to the admissions office to help increase your position on the list so I am asking for advice on how or what to include when I do.

I am contacting a DO in my area to meet with him and discuss the career further, but I don't know if I can obtain enough shadowing experience in the next month to really impact my applications enough.

Any thoughts on this or anyone who had been waitlisted and move up?

I would LOVE to be in for this fall. If I am not able to make it, I think I might be willing to sit out a year and take a seat in the follow year's class too.

TUCOM just felt like the right school for me.

Agreed. Touro was my second choice, I was amazingly surprised about how much I fit in there. But the thing was, Touro is going to be an amazing school in 5-10 years, but they're not quite there yet.
