TUCOM CA Discussion Thread 2010-2011

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
My prayers go out to you guys. Keep the faith. Hopefully we'll see each other this fall. :xf:

You guys...I didn't get the update letter!😱 I'm not sure what to think about it. I was helping a friend all day and just read your posts. I didn't get any emails today, but did delete some spam stuff. I'm pretty sure the letter wasn't in my spam folder though because I have always received things from TUCOM directly in my inbox. Did anyone receive it in their spam? Is it possible that I deleted it?

Probably not likely if you had received emails from Stephen Davis before. Might be worth adding his email to your allowed recipient list. Don't fret, you really didn't miss much! If they have big news for any of us I'd hope they try phone and email to get us!

Did the update email tell high wait listers what tier they are on?

No. Just the same old stuff. PM me your email and I'll forward it to you if you want.

Did the update email tell high wait listers what tier they are on?

Yeah, basically the same stuff we already know... Does anyone know why they can't release our positions on the waitlist? This point seems to escape me. There must be some reason why, but I can't think of one. It seems that people could make much better decisions about their next four years if they at least knew where they were on the list.

They did tell the mid waitlisters that there is a possibility for them, and that the low waitlisters didn't have much chance. I'm still reading into it as them saying the high waitlisters have a good chance...

That's how I read it too the first time, but he has not asked the adcom to rank the mid waitlist and doesn't plan to until the high list is "exhausted." It worried me that this hasn't been done, because that means that the high list is NOT close to being "exhausted." So, you could read it as the med list is on standby until they figure out if they THINK they will exhaust the high, which at this point they don't THINK that. Whatever... we are all waiting and I hope half the class at Touro gets in somewhere more desireable and drops out so we can take there spots...this stress thing has definitely made us all more then worthy.

Another note... my friend is a 4th year at Touro and she said that on the first day of school they usually have 3 alternates from the waitlist that show up just in case they have students not show for the first day of school. If there are absences they are in. If there are not absences then they are offered guaranteed admin for the following years class. So, if you don't get in off the list soon there is still hope to be an alternate. I don't know if it is STILL like this, but she said they have done this for a few years now

LabLuvr did you call them? You might want to call to make sure you are still on the list and nothing funny happened. OR email the dean personally...

Oh really? The first day of classes or the first day of orientation? That's a great tip!

Another thing to keep in mind with those emails is that after researching the past year or two of posts it is clear that they use a carbon-copy email every year for these updates. Whether or not they did this year is unclear, but if they did then you could expect the wording of the email to not necessarily reflect the exact status of the waitlists. I hope they are close to exhausting our list! They must be, for crying out loud! Right??

Thats a good way to look at it. And its still the first week of July...

The "tip" isn't really a tip. The Adcom/Dean will call 3 people before orientation and let them know they are alternates (or so I have been told).

OHH! You mean, you basically have to be invited? I see...

I was just perusing this post, obsessively, as usual... I may be wrong, but has there really only been one acceptance off the high waitlist since they closed interviews? (at least that posted on SDN)

After reading the letter, I too feel very hopeful for the high wait list people. Although they didn't mention anything (as far as I can remember) about the high wait listers, they did say usually they get to the medium wait list. This makes me feel good about things...just more waiting.

I think you are right, DeadlyWarbler, I have only heard of 1 person directly and 1 person's friend getting pulled so far. I can't believe there are only 2 people who have been taken off the list though. I guess there are more people than we thought that don't post on SDN.

I'm curious to know how many people are holding out for Touro no matter what. I for one am, as I have said previously.

Microscopegal, what are your plans. Are you also planning on holding out for Touro or are you going to take your other acceptance if you don't hear anything by a certain date. I understand if you want to keep it to yourself, but I am just curious what others are thinking.

The way I see it, we have 3 more weeks from tomorrow to find out. If we don't hear anything by 3 pm Friday, July 29, then I guess we aren't in the class of 2015 or invited to be alternate that day. I hope it doesn't come to take, but man...that would be a rough day for me!

I want to hold out....its worth it for me to hold out but I can't hold forever. My MCATs are expired, this is my third time applying and I am not getting any younger. I don't really have much of a choice. I just don't want to start school away from my family on this crazy 1 week cross country road trip without any time for relaxation or preparation. I will do what I have to...I am lucky to have an acceptance anywhere. I am leaving next Saturday July 16th from California to head to Erie for the start of school on July 23rd (one week later exactly). HOWEVER, I have EVERY intention of turning around if I get a phone call or email before July 23rd. Even if it means loosing some money on a apartment deposit, gas, or whatever. The tricky part is figuring out housing and when I have to put a deposit down. Erie starts with registration on a Saturday, so I will have to get that call before Friday the 22nd, or I am out. I hope I hear something sooner rather then later. I hope we all hear somethign sooner rather then later.

I check this post constantly in hopes that at least one of us will have heard... it feels unreal that only 2 have gotten in. I would have expected more SDNers to have heard by now. But, whatcha gonna do?! wait....wait...wait!

There have been a few people from Erie that have posted there acceptances from a waitlist this past week, so perhaps with waitlists at other schools moving along more and more people will partake in the shfuffle that grants us a spot....

I have good news! I just withdrew my acceptance to Touro-CA, so I hope one of you gets my spot. Good Luck!

Hi guys, just thought I'd let you know that one of my friends got in today and he knows another girl who got in a few days ago. Both High Alternates. So things are moving. Nothing else until Monday now though. Hope we all hear soon!

YAY! I think this coming week will be a good week... we only have 3 weeks left, so if its gonna move now would be the time right?

Wow, I'm not sure whether I'm happy there's movement or scared that there's movement and it wasn't me! Probably both! I have a good feeling about this week!

Thanks for letting us know Bilbojo! I too feel good about this next week. I hope you get called this week for sure, microscopegal. I can wait longer if needed, although it would be great to hear sooner than later! I really feel as though all 4 of us that have been posting will get in this year.

It seems that all people (at least that we've heard about) that have been taken off the high wait list are associated with Touro. It makes sense to take your own people first. I'm feeling pretty confident that after they take all their own, we will get in.

I just wish I knew how many people are on the high waitlist. I don't even care about my position that much, but it would be great to know if there are 20 or 80 people in our same position. I'm guessing it's closer to 20, but who knows!

Thanks LabLuvr... I am thinking 20 or less as well. I mean, really, how many people in a class of 135ish would change their plans last minute? Its as annoying for them to do the mad dash as it is for us (unless the schools starts in late aug/sept). NE ways..I think we will hear very soon. And I hope all 4 of us get in! And I hope we get to meet each other! LOL 😉

Yeah, I'm guessing the high alternates number at about 20. Say the rumor was true and they fill half the class from the waitlist (really not sure about that) then they would feasibly want at least that many people on the waitlist (also not sure about that). Maybe divide that by three if they happen to all be the same size teirs (which I'm also not sure about) and that comes to about 22.5 people per teir. The take home message, I'm really not sure. =)

All I know is that I want all of us posting acceptances here this coming week! We will all definitely have to meet once we get in! Here's crossing my fingers and hoping!:xf:

6 it is! I'm rooting for all the high waitlisters! Let's hope all our phones ring today. I know I'm ready. Orientation starts 3 weeks from today! If Touro would give me even a week to enjoy being accepted to med school I'd be willing to throw them a parade.

So after hearing about high waitlisters from last year having to reapply (and not receiving an offer for Early Acceptance), I'm realizing that I should probably start preparing to do just that (fdiogfndiofn!!!)...this is my first time applying, so I'm not really sure how it works the second time around...for those of you who have reapplied, did you have to start from scratch? (i.e. get all new LOR, rewrite your PS, etc)...?? I'm still reeling from the news that high waitlisters from last year had to go through this again, so any advice would be greatly appreciated...

It also makes me wonder, why were people from last year's high waitlist not offered Early Acceptance? As I understood it, if you were placed on the high WL, you are completely qualified to attend Touro, but there just aren't enough spots to offer. So then why wouldn't everyone on the high WL be offered Early Acceptance (if not a spot in the upcoming class)? They start with 135 wide open spots, so it can't be due to a lack of space. So why would we be placed on a high WL and not offered a spot in next year's class?! Very flustered 😕

I'm not trying to be rude, but I am a bit skeptical about high wait listers not being accepted during early accept. (Now that I say this, it will probably happen to me!) I have only heard of 1 person posting this and they didn't really explain much about the situation. If I remember correctly, they said they were placed on the high wait list last year and again this year. That seems strange to me, but again I'm just being skeptical and don't mean any offense to the person who posted it if it is indeed true.

I was placed on the High Wait List at Touro Nevada last year and didn't get pulled. This year I am on the High Wait List at Touro California. Touro Nevada never mentioned anything about an early accept program when I was going through this last year so I'm not sure how that works or how it compares to TUCA. When I reapplied I didn't change much besides adding my Master's Degree Program, some shadowing, and a few letters or rec.

Ah, that makes more sense now. I was thinking you were on the TUCOM high waitlist two years in a row. I feel somewhat better now! I'm hoping you make it in this year bilbojo! I hope we all do!

5 min. to 5pm, I'm thinking the likelihood of a phone call is pretty slim for today. I will resume staring at my phone tomorrow.

Hello all! I have been reading this blog since last year...I too have been placed on the highwaitlist as I was in the last group to interview in May. I received an email about an hour ago from Admissions asking if I would like to placed on the Orietation Stand-by list which allows you the opportunity to be accepted at Orientation which lasts for three days. If I do not get invited to show for orientation, it is stated in the email that
"It is important to understand that candidates who agree to be placed on the Orientation Stand-by list are guaranteed to either be accepted into the TUCOM-CA Class of 2015 (provided an opening occurs) or are guaranteed Early Accept to the TUCOM-CA Class of 2016."

So either way I can now breathe knowing I will be getting in this year or next! Just thought to let you all know this alternate stand-by waitlist does exist...

That last post truly gives me much hope for getting in this year.

Sounds like the orientation stand by list is the 3 students we've been hearing about who either get in or get an early accept. I hope more than 3 students get the chance for an early accept though.

I think its odd they are offering alternate spots so early on. Orientation is 3 weeks away...why would they pick alternates now, when assumedly they would still have time to pick people off the waitlist in general? This whole thing is starting to weird me out....

Hey there EWeezy... ok so this was my THIRD application cycle. Each time I reapplied I rewrote my ps, but I used the same LOR or added LOR depending on what was going on. You don't really have to start from scratch with all of your ECs, letters, and such, but I think the PS should be new. BUT.... if you LIKE your PS then don't change it. I didn't like my first one, or my second one...the third one felt right. Each year my reasons for wanting to be a doctor deepend so I kinda felt that needed explaining. But enough of that! I hope we all get in so we can move on from this...

Just curious though did you get a lot of interviews? IF not, maybe change might be a good thing. My first year I got none, second year I had one, and this year I had two... not as big of an improvement as I had hoped for, but I have one acceptance in hand and that is all it really takes to move forward. Going to Touro would be the icing on the cupcake

Well the letter did say that once I respond with a yes, there will be follow-up emails with instructions and my spot on the list. It could be more than three as it said "approximately 3 candidates" are invited to attend orientation on a stand-by basis.....Living in CA might have a big impact on why I was chosen as I can attend the orientation there with no traveling issues.

Interesting. I have the same question as microscopegal. Why so early? Are they anticipating that not very many more candidates will be pulled and so they are choosing the orientation alternates? Or are they just planning ahead? Congrats to you Born 2 Doctor but that is confusing and a bit nerve racking for me. Eek.

Thanks Bilbojo! I've been freaked out for over a year! I was complete in September and did not get an interview until the last interview day. Sometimes it works outs in the least expected way.

As to why Touro is pulling alternates? In the email it said "You are receiving this email because I believe that it is unlikely at this point that you will be unconditonally accepted from the waitlist for the Class of 2015 and I would like to place you on the Orientation Stand-by list."

Wierd me out...couldn't have said it better myself. The process didn't make a whole lot of sense before but now it really doesn't. Offering stand by positions to students before they are done offering full acceptances?? Now I'm lost.

I'm freaked out. I envy you guys who are sitting on an acceptance!

Hmm. So are we thinking that they pulled the next three off the list, offered them an orientation stand by spot, and will now continue pulling regularly in the "unlikely" event that another spot opens up?

Wow. I'm really freaking out now. The last update email seemed encouraging and now hearing that they have already pulled alternates, it makes me nervous.

Maybe (yet another one) they wanted to contact the alternates, sooner rather than later to ensure they had people coming. My guess is (again who knows) that they will continue to pull people until class starts. I'm going to tell myself that because it makes me feel better at this point.

Ok, here is another thing I'm thinking, maybe to make myself feel better again. I am very happy for you, Born 2 Doctor, and am not trying to sound rude by any means, just speculating. I'm wondering if the alternates that were "pulled" today were towards to bottom of the high waitlist. The email didn't say they are unlikely to accept more people, but speaking on an individual level.

Again, Born 2 Doctor, I don't have anything from Touro and am not saying you are on the bottom of the list. I'm just thinking aloud. Also, thank you so much for posting this information. It's great to hear what is happening there since I'm not hearing anything!
