TUCOM CA Discussion Thread 2010-2011

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hi, I am also high wait listed at TU CA. I talked to one of the admissions committee today and he said that acceptances have been sent to high wait list students already (starting last week). There are currently both regular applicants and accelerated mph students from the Touro MPH program on the wait list.

Sent out as in through the mail? Or emailed/called?

I am on the medium wait list and, given that I dont live in CA, am resigned to the fact that it's probably not gonna happen this year.

Does anyone know the chances for early acceptance for next year's class? The FAQ we got in the mail said something like they accept a "significant" number of people off the wait list for early acceptance, which obviously sounds promising.

From what I have been told they send them via mail, unless you specifically ask to be contacted via email/phone. But they will do whatever they need to do in order to get a hold of the applicant.

To add on to what you said. In order to receive the email notification of acceptance you must have sent an email to Dr. Haight saying that:"please send me my acceptance decision through email" either in the subject line, or in the email itself. It's a procedural thing that Dr. Haight has to follow due to issues in the past. If you did not send this email, you can go ahead and send it to Dr. Haight now. Otherwise, your acceptance/rejection will come through the mail.

p.s. if you sign up for the email notification, you'll get it through email first, then you'll get it in the mail the day after or 2 or 3 days after that (depending how far you live in the wilderness, maybe even a month after, if you live in the tundra).

Hey guys- I'm also waiting to hear from TUCOM. I'm on the high waitlist as well. I thought we were supposed to email Dr. Haight if we wanted to be notified of our status via email after the ADCOM met (during interview season). Is this correct? Should we expect an letter in the mail, email or phone call if we have been accepted off of the waitlist?

Btw, I know TUNCOM as a similiar process as TUCOM regarding the wait-list but do other DO schools keep "high waitlist" students waiting "up to the first day of classes" ?

Okay...its Thursday afternoon, a week after they supposedly sent out acceptances... where are all these people with the golden tickets? I mean snail mail is slow, but not this slow (three days tops to get cross country and overnight for people in Cali). If they went out of the office Friday night/Saturday morning, they certainly should have arrived by now. And if they did email (which supposedly they are) then where are all the accepted by emailers? Hurry up! It would be really nice if they just called people and said, "do you want a spot yes or no, and what is your visa/mastercard #).

Ugh. Waiting suck. Sometimes ignorance is bliss.

I'm right there with you... I was told the notifications will be coming via email, so maybe tomorrow?? I agree, the waiting is almost crazy-making at this point. How many days do you think they are giving us to accept the offers? Maybe that is causing the delay if they offered a few seats and are waiting on their response...

I would love to be getting fin aid lined up and planning my move to Vallejo.

ditto.

Good luck High-listers! Let's hope we all hear something today!! Friday seems to be their day for contacting applicants. I was contacted for my interview and about their decision both on Fridays. Fingers crossed!

How many sig figs on that? That will give me a much more accurate representation of your faith. =)

By the way, I did mean to say good luck to ALL waitlisters! But I am biased to my list...

$20 bucks says no one hears a thing from them today 🙄

Hmmm. Sounds about right. Does touro observe the sabbath? If so how early do they close up shop? Maybe not too late for today??

Yes they observe the Sabbath. I'm all but certain they are closed for the day by now.

Started pulling people from the waitlist last week huh....getting harder and harder to believe that.

completely agree. Although why lie?

I don't think they lied. They did pulled people off the waitlist. I went to school (Touro) yesterday and a person in my lab who was in the A-mph got pulled. He doesn't go on SDN (never even heard of SDN, as do 80% of people who apply to medschool).

*edit: ok, maybe 80% is too much, it's an exageration.

Sorry if this is on the wrong thread... but I'm still looking for an apartment-mate. I'm on the MSMHS program and would like to share an apartment with a M1 or another MSMHS, but please pm me if you are still looking for housing and we can talk from there 🙂

Thanks and good luck all!

It's a shame I no longer enjoy weekends and wish they would pass quicker so that it would be Monday and TUCOM would resume the waitlist process!

So when you say a-mph, do you mean he was in the program while he applied? OR do you mean, he applied for DO and MPH, and just started the MPH at Touro this past week or so? (I am sure this doesn't really matter, I was just curious). I would expect Touro to take care of their own, and if he is already a Touro student it makes sense he would be pulled earlier.

I just want to know already! I hate this! I was waitlisted last year and didnt make it in (to a diff school) and the whole process was just terrible. I shouldn't complain since I have been accepted somewhere, but I hate this not knowing what side of the country I am moving to next...

I dont know how anyone could not have heard of SDN... I mean if you are taking mcats or applying for medical school and know anyone that is in the same boat you have to have heard of it. Perhaps I am being a little naive, but I have been following SDN forever...and everyone I know does as well. Maybe they don't all post, but following for sure. I could see non-premeds and some non-trads not knowing of its existence, but I would think there is a pretty good slice of people who know of it.

I agree. I interviewed at 8 schools this year and at every school I interviewed, nearly every fellow applicant there talked about SDN. It is true that not everyone posts on SDN, but I am certain that most serious applicants visit this site.

In other news...Im fed up with Touro and am going to AZCOM:meanie:

Advance MPH. Touro offers the MPH program by itself. It also gives the option to complete the MPH program in 1 year. This is the advance MPH program. It has nothing to do with the MSMHS program. People in the A-MPH program is guaranteed an interview for the COM program or the COP program if they maintain above a 3.0 GPA. They are not guaranteed an acceptance, but so is every other master program. Have faith,

Sorry to lose you 1979! congrats on your acceptance and good luck at AZCOM. Do us haggard waitlisters a favor and withdraw your app asap, will ya? Maybe we will see you come residency!

I am in the AMPH program at TU and as long as you receive above a 3.0 in your MPH classes you are guaranteed an interview. The MSMHS program seems to be more successful at moving people into the COM program though because they actually take classes with the medical school students and they get to know the COM faculty. The MPH degree is more beneficial when you graduate though... hopefully.

Can anyone tell me if we do get pulled off the wait list how much we will owe before our financial aid arrives? I think I remember it being $2000, but am not sure if it will be more since we are so close to the start of school. Thanks.

I believe its $2000 for the deposit.

What is everybody going to do about the moving/ housing situation? ie What is we hear from TUCOM like a week or two before school starts? Is anyone starting to look at potential apartments/houses now?

I was just starting to think about looking at places...if accepted, I'd like to live with another Touro student (since I wouldn't want to subject someone with normal work hours to a med student's schedule)...would anyone be interested in San Francisco? I was thinking checking out the Presidio since it's right by the bridge and parking isn't an issue. But would be open to other areas in SF as well. If anyone's looking to move to SF let me know!

I don't want to burst anyone's California Dreams or anything, but if you ARE thinking of living in SF or Berekely or anywhere else more then 40 minutes from school I would HIGHLY suggest signing a month to month or 3 month or 6 month lease, just in case you decide during the year that the commute isn't worth it. I live in Sacramento (which is an hour and a half to SF on a good day) and have lived in NorCal for most of my life, and although it may not seem far to go to SF from Vallejo Bay area traffic is no joke. Not to mention when you are knee deep in tests and everything else there is really no need to add a commute to the stress. Also, bridge tolls suck.... Parking in the city can be INSANE and $$$. And street traffic is BAD during the week in addition to bridge traffic.

Unless you are the type who doesn't go to lecture anyways, I would reconsider for something closer. OR, think about living in SF second year when you feel more comfortable OR third year if you get an SF rotation spot.

Good luck to you! I am sorry this process has been the way it has, and I hope that AZCOM works out for you! It was nice meeting you on here and I wish you the best! :luck:

Yes- I totally agree with you. I would not want to deal with hassle of commuting from SF to Vallejo on a daily basis. Bay area traffic is crazy and unpredictable. Also- its very expensive to live in SF plus would be spending alot of money on gas & toll. The SF cost of living isn't exactly student friendly either.

I'll second that. Bay traffic is bad from SF to Vallejo unless you time it perfect. Bay bridge, McAurthor maze, University Ave... It's basically non-stop and you get a bridge toll BOTH ways! I had romantic ideas of living in SF but practicality has over-ridden that... But then, I'll bet its totally possible. Especially if you value living in the city.

By the way, I'm just paying notice to the Monday that just passed without so much as a peep from TUCOM admissions... Maybe the previous post about them forcing us into stress induced breakdowns IS their way of thinning the waitlist! We already lost theone1979...

Hey guys. I wanted to let all the wait list people in on some financial aid information I have. I spoke with the financial aid office a while back and they told me to complete everything for financial aid except for the PLUS loan because they do a credit check for the PLUS loan. (You don't want to do credit checks very often). They told me if I get accepted it will then be very easy for them to complete things...no matter how close to the start of school. If I don't get accepted then they will shred all my personal information. Basically, she told me to complete everything on the list (within the link below) EXCEPT for #12 because that's the PLUS loan. I hope that helps.

Awesome, a cure for idle hands. Thanks!!

Does anyone know how many students are on the high wait list? Or how many seats they expect to offer? It looks like the wait list was broken up into 2 tiers last year. From the facebook page, it doesn't seem like the class to close to full yet....

Does anyone know? Yes, the administration at Touro knows, but apparently they do not want to share this (or any specific information) with those on the waitlist.

I really am at a complete loss regarding the waitlist movement (or lack thereof). In that "update", they stated that they started pulling people from the waitlist 2 weeks ago. However, aside from a single second hand report that someone was offered a seat, there doesn't seem to be any movement at all.

If you look at the threads for any other schools, if the school has begun waitlist movement, there is tons of activity on the thread with students reporting that they were notified and offered seats. It just seems odd that despite the fact that Touro says they began pulling people 2 weeks ago...it is dead quiet here.

It is odd that none of us have heard anything yet....I mean it's already the 21st of June and school starts in just over a month. I'm tempted to call the admissions office but I don't want to be pushy. Yeah- its dead quiet considering they've started pulling students 😕

I totally agree. It's baffling. I would think that by this point a school would have plowed through their high alternates and would be starting to pull medium and low alternates. For the school that claims that waitlists are "barbaric" they seems to have the most barbaric process that I've seen thus far. Most of them have already all but sewn up their classes for the year. I would think we would have heard even just one person on SDN posting about being offered a seat. Maybe they swear you to secrecy when you are accepted!😱

Yeah- everyone in my fam was shocked when I told them the ADCOM said we can expect to hear from up until the first day of class. I don't think they swear student into secrecy since students last year posted when once they rec'd acceptance notification.

Is anyone else constantly checking their email/mail/phone hoping its something from TUCOM 👍

Constantly... I have all relevant forms of technology on the task.

I just spent a few minutes perusing the 2008-2009 TUCOM forum and it is almost identical to this year. Barely anyone posted regarding acceptance, and the majority of those pulled from the waitlist were in mid-July. The quoted emails that applicants received were identical to the ones we got. I can't help but think the process is the same every year. There were a few high waitlisters who were never offered spots.

I'm thrilled to attend TUCOM, but I'm basically going to write this one off until July. If I hear before then, well...bonus. I am pretty frustrated. If we were worthy enough to be put on a high alternate list, you'd think we'd be worth enough to be accepted with enough time actually enjoy our summer or perhaps start the MPH program they were touting so hard during the interview.

hey guys...im an avid reader of this forum because i too was on the torturous high waitlist for the upcoming class. i never posted here because i didnt like adding to all the tension. i can attest to the fact that there has been movement of the waitlist because today i got a phone call during lunch from touro ca offering me a spot. i can tell you that i interviewed with the 3rd to the last group and notified of my waitlist status on may 20. i sent in 2 additional letter of recommendations a week later and just yesterday sent in a "letter of continued interest" stating that really i want to go to the school and why. though it may have been a coincidence, i honestly think it helped. i wish you all the best of luck in pursuing your dream. don't give up, stay positive, and everything will be ok.

Call me paranoid....but this post is suspicious to me, and that is all I will say.

If I'm mistaken, congrats on your acceptance!

what?! I am so offended lol. I understand your skepticism, but really everything i said is true. these forums aren't all evil, i promise. what can i say to make you believe me haha.

Well...it seems I have a letter of continued interest to write tonight... just curious would any of you consider telling the adcom that you have been accepted elsewhere, or would you keep that to yourself?

I wrote a letter of intent in April, but perhaps they want more recent letters? thoughts??
