I'm working on my secondary, getting ready to send it in soon. Hopefully there is still a decent number of spots open.

How close is TUCOM to Vegas? Where do most students usually live?
 
I was put on hold pre-interview. Is there a chance I will still get an interview at this school?

It's In Vegas, from the strip it's about a 10-15 minute drive. I assume that most students live in Henderson nearby the school.

It is technically NOT in Vegas...Henderson is a city/suburb of Vegas. It takes no more than 15 minutes to get to the strip from the school. Most students live in Henderson.

Hi Arizona, I think I heard back within a week or two. It seems like mail is sometimes a problem for the school but the staff have been very helpful and quick to correct any issues. Good luck!

Any idea how far they let you schedule interviews out? I just received II today and unfortunately won't be available to attend until the end of february/early march 🙁

I just took the first one available they offered me. Wouldn't hurt to call a few more times and see if there are any other earlier openings. They allow one schedule change.

I am interviewing here on Jan 11th and I can't really find any good information on the school. Does anyone have any links or information on why they want to go here? Their website seems very generic and since it is a newer program there isn't much on them.

To be completely honest I applied to several schools around my area that I had friends, family and where I went to college. I was planning at looking at more detailed information once I found out where I got interviews to.

Hi,

I got high-waitlisted at TUN-COM.
I talked to a couple of people that I know that attend, one is a fourth year, the other is a second year. I can't remember everything but I remember them saying that the anatomy labs are dissection (with a decent ratio) rather than prosection. I guess each has its benefits, but I feel like it's beneficial to do it yourself. There are alot of schools I believe that do the prosection method, so you could use that as something that makes TUNCOM stand out a bit.

They have some clinic I think they run as well, but this is typical of most schools. I hear that their open-door policy with the staff is pretty free-flowing. They are mostly lecture based.. not sure if they have a bit of pbl mixed in or not. Anyone that has more info on that feel free to correct me.

They have some yearly basketball rivalry game with TUCOM.

Yeah thats all I know... lol.

Some of the questions they asked me:
Why Osteopathic Medicine?
Why Touro?
How did you find out about Osteopathic Medicine?
What do you think of OMM? Do you think it works?
Then they asked me some other stuff but I'm not sure if you're supposed to..
1.) Where else have you interviewed?
2.) Oh you interviewed at LECOM-B. What do you think of PBL?
3.) Do you feel you learn better in a PBL style environment or a Traditional Lecture based curriculum?

I chose to answer those questions, although my adviser said it was wrong to ask questions regarding another school. (Maybe the PBL question is valid though)

Hey there, I'll try to add on to some things that Art3Mis didn't mention. 🙂 It's true that most of our classes are lecture-based, but in 1st year you will also have PBL in the 2nd semester. Biochem has lots of small-group cases that you make concept maps for. Basic Science Foundations (BSF) has small-group days as well called TBL (team-based learning).
In 2nd year, we have PCS (primary care skills) 1st semester, and the lab portions of that are usually small group cases with a faculty physician, where we talk through the history, ROS, physical exam, plan, differential, etc. as a group. We dress up and wear our white coats for this. (This is very similar to PBL first year, except now we have a little better idea of what's going on). PCS also includes a suture lab and a couple of different simulated patient encounters that get recorded and we can watch our own exams to see how we did. 2nd semester we have OSCE, where we have even more simulated patient exams and they told us it's going to be focused a lot on training us for COMLEX level 2. Our practicals will be in that format, with 14 (I think) mins to do the history & physical and 9 mins to write a SOAP note.
Something unique we do is Project Prepare (http://www.projectprepare.org/about/clients/), which we actually do next week. Educators come teach us in small groups (of 4ish) how to do pelvic, rectal, breast exams, etc. on themselves. Our professor for OSCE said yesterday that out of all the reviews students have done since they started using the program, they have only gotten one 4/5, the rest were 5/5.

We also do have the patient clinic, but the only time you will be getting involved there is if you sign up for Peds OMM clinic (which is weekly this year) or if you rotate with one of the physicians during 3rd or 4th years. But we have lots of other opportunities to get some clinical exposure if you pay attention and join clubs, especially ACOFP, which has a lot of volunteer opportunities (our chapter is currently #1 in the nation!).

Mediasite is kind of unique about us. All of our lectures get recorded, so you can watch them again online. It's really helpful if a professor talks fast, so you can pause while taking notes that you missed. We also began taking our exams on a computerized system this year called Examsoft.

We are a Jewish medical school, but most of our students are not Jewish (me included). The main things that will make us noticeably different from this are that we get Jewish holidays off and all food provided by clubs, school funding, etc. must be Kosher (you can bring whatever you want for lunch, however).

Those are just some big things that I can think of off the top of my head.

Can anybody tell me more about the interview here? How is it?
and the main question...is it one of those schools that interview a lot of people? and everyone has no more than a 25% chance of acceptance?
I guess I am not too great at interviewing...
any tips for this one?

Hey, I was accepted here so maybe I can help you out. I know everyone says this about interviews but it's true when I say it was laid back. The day starts out at 8 oclock with everyone meeting Taylor and he gives you the jist of the school, where the program is going etc...etc...Then the Dean will come in and give you his bit about the mission, where the program is going etc...etc...The dean will usually give you about 20 minutes of Q&A before all the students are broken up into 2 groups for interview blocks. The way this works is by sending 6 students on a tour of the facilities while 6 students are interviewed, one at a time for 20-30 minutes by two professors. Some may say that 20 minutes is not sufficient to sell yourself, but know that your interview will be open and the professors interviewing you have done their homework on your app (the consensus with the students who interviewed the same day I did was that students seemed to be matched to professors based on their personal statements and interests in the AACOMAS main app) so they will have some understanding of where you are coming from. For example I was asked about my time racing motorcycles (by a professor I was pretty sure rode as well) as well as my time spent working in the ER, a Nursing home, and how my study routine changed to bump my MCAT up by 9 points the second time I took it. Just answer truthfully, don't freeze up, and be as personable as possible. That's really all there is to it.

After the tour/interview the bursar will come in and tell you how you need to sell a kidney and or testicle/ovary to cover your loans and expenses and then you get a nice pizza lunch with a panel of current students to answer any questions you may have.

As for the number of interviews to slots we were told they interview 500 students, usually give out 250 acceptances and 135 students matriculate for the academic year. So the good news is that you have about a 50/50 shot of getting in if granted an interview (I assume so please don't take it as fact).

Has anyone been placed on hold pre-interview and received an interview invite? Not sure if this is the kiss of death or if I still have a shot.

This what I wrote down in my notes from my interview 10 days ago. High waitlist is a good spot to be in (as in most schools). Can't wait to hear back! Taylor said us 1/11'ers should have to wait about 3 weeks for a decision.

Letter arrived today via snail mail: high waitlist. (interviewed 1/11)

Anyone care to comment on my chances? I know they're high, I just want to get a feel for how high, and when high waitlisters should hear good news by. Is there a ranking?

At the interview today, admissions counselor said that last year they got through the entire high wait-list, but none of the medium to low wait list. Your position is ranked but they will not disclose your position unfortunately. He said it is a good thing to be on the high wait-list but anywhere below that you should start looking for other options (Post Bac, Masters, Etc.) so I think you'll be doing alright but you'll find out in the month of May or later, thats the bad part 😡
 
Just got a letter of acceptance in the mail! Interviewed on 1/11
 
Looking at last year's thread, it looks like the movement for the waitlist begins around mid-May.

Anyone know when the final payment deadline is? That's usually a good predictor of when things really start to move.

Same as you for me. Actually a blessing in disguise because I don't have to put down the $ yet but from what I heard its basically an acceptance.
 
ok important question...my interview is in like a day...
i cant find my secondary for touro NV for some reason...
did we not have an essay? was it just like a basic form because then i probably wouldnt have saved it.

also...if there is no essay in the secondary,...
exactly how do i prepare for this open file interview...
i will read my personal statement...and know my volunteer work and research...
obv i cant memorize my transcript but i'll have an idea ofcourse
wat else can i study apart from PS and volunteer exp?

You probably didn't remember it because there was no essay, just basically an overview of your AACOMAS except they had you do it by hand and send it in. Really there's hardly time for them to go into too much depth, the interview is 20 minutes. Just know why DO, Why Touro, and about the activities in your app.

So I interviewed here on Jan. 30th and today I got a masters in medical health science brochure. Did anyone else get this? or is this an indication that I'm not going to be accepted.

It takes 3 weeks to get an answer, so I really doubt it has anything to do with an acceptance or waitlist decision just 1 week out.
 
Got accepted! I was in the morning group on 1/11 any others in the morning group on that day?

I was accepted and I didn't get one of these.... maybe it doesn't mean anything though, just hang in there 🙂
