TUCOM on-campus student housing and life

Hello all-I'll be attending TUCOM August 2002, and was wondering if I could get some input from current students about what it's like living on Mare Island; I really didn't feel like I got enough out of the tour on interview day. Is the on-campus housing comparable or better to that available off-island? Are there good workout facilities available on campus (weight room, treadmills, basketball court, swimming pool, etc.)? Is it a big hassle to have to leave the island for whatever reason? Anyway, I was just hoping to get a better feel for a student's life in that area...Thanks! 🙂

Congrats Mickai,
this is kind of a tough question to answer. I live on campus in the studios. Now, what kind of person you are is what really determines where you want to live. I'm going to describe why I live on-campus and feel free to e-mail me with anymore questions. I like living on-campus because one I feel secure and it's quiet (so I do all my studying in my studio). I chose to live in the studios instead of the houses on-campus because the rent is not that much more plus I have my own place to myself, but be warned the studios are not tin cans but they are not big either (it works for me). The only thing I will say about off-campus is you are looking at a higher cost but newer appliances and such. Workout facilities is another tough question because we just bought some free weights which are great for the average lifter but if you are into the whole 24 hour super fitness program the weight room is not going to work. Basketball courts are awesome at Touro. Swimming pool as of right now you will have to go off-campus and I'm not sure where it is located (I know the dean is in the process of getting the pool up in the officers lounge back up and running). I have no problems with leaving the island (except the bridge being lifted for a boat to go by). Overall, I can say that I heard so many negatives about living on an island before I got here but I love living on the island and I'm going to live on the island next year if I can (but it's not for everybody).

Thank you, that's very helpful info.; I appreciate your input. I heard there are 1 bedrooms as well, do you have any idea how those are? Thanks! 🙂

The studios are the one bedroom places. I will give you some more details. I would guess the size of the living space is about 18ft. x 11ft. and then there is a kitchen and bathroom. Also, you get a two car garage to store any extra items.

Regarding the living on the island, is there high-speed internet access available? I am terribly internet dependent and couldn't imagine living without T1+/DSL, etc. Thank you.

PS. Does anyone have pictures of the other buildings at TUCOM, besides the library and the main medical building? I interviewed there but I didn't get to see as much of the campus as I would have liked.

No DSL/T1 for the on-campus housing, but it's in the school computer labs.

The requests have been made but Pac. Bell seems to not want to hook us up.
