I guess a handful of us SDN'ers got the good news today. I am starting this thread to see if anyone would like discuss the pro's and con's of this school after interviewing there. Personally I've only interviewed there and NSU so far. NSU was beautiful but after considering the class size (240 NSU vs. 140 TUCOM-NV) and talking with the students I think NV may be a slightly better fit for me. There a very cooperative, scrappy vibe at Touro NV that I liked and the town was very beautiful after a little getting used to.

Post your thoughts and comments! There are probably lots of things to consider both pro's and con's that I don't even know about. Hopefully this will help us all in our decisions whether to attend or not. 😍

I am one of the good news recipients from Touro.

The school indeed was great, and I am absolutely considering attending for Class of 2011.

There is tremendous opportunity there for graduating doctors, and the need for quality healthcare providers is huge.

Touro also has some really great clinical affiliations and therefore most of the hospitals are absolutley welcoming to new DO physicians. The school is also continually adding more and more rotation sites. Actually I think they pretty much have most of Nevada on board already (at least all of the major ones)

I got the good news too...i have been reflecting on the pros and cons extensively since the interview. the newfacility is great, especially the labs, but i'm havinga hard with thefact that thereweren't really any windows in the building. This is mostly a problem bc no one seems to leave the building all day.

I love the location for the access outdoor activites, but i was negatively impressed by the lack of anything but strip malls and chains.

My interviewertold me they may be openinga clinic in a year or so...that would be a plus, but who knows when it will really happen.

It seems like you get a lot of hands on experience duringthe clinical rotations.

thats all i got for now.

Since I live a block away from Touro i think i need to add something. The school from the outside looks like crap, its a wherehouse convert to a med school. I call it medschool in a box, but once you get inside it is actually pretty nice. Living by the school can be very expensive, I pay 940 for 2 bed bath, but you can find things alot cheaper in crappier areas of coarse. Nevada is in dire need for docs plus there are an increasing amount of residencies opening here, for one they opened a DO derm, internal, and family, plus the new Emergency med residency at the allopath school has a DO director. Anyways I got an interview there next month. If you have any questions about LV or touro send a question.

I got the acceptance e-mail today after interviewing on Wednesday! WAHOO! I really liked the place. I thought the students were awesome.

Congrats Terp! i'm very happy for you, you totally deserve it!

ps. what happened with the gevitz book!

^^ these were some of the concerns I have as well. It did appear on my interview day that the students were holed up in the building all day, HOWEVER it was an exam day the day I went. From staying in the town a few days I know that it is only a 5 min. drive to the nearest Barnes and Noble (B&N as I like to call it) for an alternative place to study or many restaurants for lunch and I have a feeling that most people do leave the campus during the middle of the day when not testing. In addition, the students seems all comfy in their casual clothing which I thought was kinda cool when compared to the students I saw at NSU who did have a dress code.

I also am not a big fan of strip malls as there are lots of those in Maryland as well, and if I did live in Henderson I would probably only go to The Vegas Strip for special occasions or so, but everything does seem very NEW which is pleasant and hopefully the town will move in a less cookie cutter direction soon.

(On a side note I hear that it is very difficult for cities to develop rapidly economically in today's world without building town shopping centers aka strip malls, as the success of all the stores within are already established and they bring a sense of familiarity to new residents. Even though they not the most visually pleasing establishments and have virtually no character to them. The best "unique" cities were those designed centuries ago where the whole city was carefully planned, (ex. San Fran, NYC, Annapolis MD, Wash. DC, etc.) and that is something you just don't see today in a new "fast growing" area. There are exceptions of course but I don't know any. This is just how the USA works I suppose. You are welcome for this meaningless lesson in development. 😉 )

The Cookie Cutter method is here to stay in Las Vegas/Henderson. Unless you live in a custom home neighborhood.
