I applied to 15 schools including tufts..
So far, I've got interview invitaitons from UMDNJ, USC, and Case.
But Tufts if one of my top choices..
I know that 1 semester of biochemistry is required for Tufts.. which I am taking it now.. but I am doing pretty bad in the class..
So.. what would happen if I drop the class?
Will I be able to enter the school without taking biochem?
Or, if I have to drop the class, there is no biochem 1 offered in spring semester.. then what should i do?

thanks!

There is not much you can do !!!
It is simple interductory BCEM course !! Are you telling me that you can not handle it !! Study more or Drop the course and Say GoodBye to Tuft.

Dear PreD
first of all, Biochemistry class is not simple course. It is the highest level of chemistry class, you know that. You shouldn't say like that to people who asks for advise from us. This is why admission committee does interview to filter out immature person like you.

It's not supposed to be a "simple" course - at least in my experience.

To the OP: Look around for other universities that offer it next semester/quarter before you drop (or investigate if your school offers it next semester). Otherwise...Just sit tight and try to pass it. Good luck!

LOOOL,
I am immature because I gave him an honest answer and told him what I honesty think about an " Interductory BCEM " !!

BCEM is not a highest level Chemistry course offered in school!!! It is usually offered by the department of biology and there are usually 2nd year, 3rd and 4th year BCEM that one can get.

Plus, He knows what he has to do for Tuft.
He needs a BCEM so he can man up, study more, talk to the professor, seek help and tutoring from friends, read additional text book or ... I am sure he knows all that.

What is your advice to him? Do you mind sharing with us?

IMO, I think Biochem is lot easier than OChem. So I think PreD has his point to some extent.

I guess it depends on university. In my case, we took the biochem 4400 level with graduate student which is 8800 level. Only 5% of students got A which included me. Anyway, its only beginning of the semester, and you can't withdraw the class anymore. so do your best. In my case, I screwed up the first test (got C), but I have made an A (got final 99 for 40%). It is hard, but is not impossible. Good Luck !

if i were you, if i was doing worse than a c+, i'd drop it and take it over the summer before entering tufts. taking it next semester is, of course, the best solution, but i am suggesting summer in case your school doesnt offer the course both fall/spring.

i suggest you anonymously call tufts. ask them you are a current applicant (and nothing else) and ask if its ok to take a required course over the summer.

keep in mind, tufts recommends B or better for a grade.

biochem is not easy, good luck!

That must comes as a big surprise to all chemistry majors.

i took organic-based biochem from the chem department and it was the hardest class i ever took...

PreD learn how to spell before you try and trash other people. I am not sure Biochem is an "interductory" course, but it may be an "introductory" course, and the School is "Tufts" not "Tuft".

LOL, slow down Pal !!
Trash him? When Did I trash him ?
Did I trash because I told him that introductory BCEM is not such a hard course !!
Or he has to man up, study harder and seek help to get a good mark in this course to get to his top choice school !!

What is your advice ?
Drop the course, get a W and then try to explain that to "Tufts" staff in the interview ??!!
Instead of coming here and jumping on me and make fun of spelling, you should come up with a better suggestion and help for this guy.

For God Sake, the semester is young ( 1 to 1.5 month). How behind can he be ?

oh my..kpark..
obviously you have not heard about physical organic chemistry

Okay, here is something that NO ONE SUGGESTED YET, cause I guess everyone's busy bashing each other lol

Why don't you drop the course now... and retake it in the winter term? Many dental schools who accept you without completing a pre-req (in this case biochem) will stipulate on the acceptance letter that you will not gain enrollment into their summer year-1 curriculum UNLESS you've fulfilled the pre-request.

As an example, psycology is requires for Univ of Michigan, I have not taken it yet, on my interview, they told me, if we decide to accept you on Dec 1 (or whenever), you have to take this class ANYTIME you feel before July.... so In my case, I'll take it in winter... end of story

You don't know that its a "simple introductory course"... some schools offer 400 level biochem courses that are usually given to the graduate students, those classes are tough as heck.... They are not impossible, but they require a lot of effort.

Ever heard of "P-Chem"?

I did three semesters of 400-level Biochemistry courses in Chemistry department, it was hell. P-chem was doable for me, but I hated the quantum mechanics.

IMO, I think Biochem is lot easier than OChem. So I think PreD has his point to some extent.

There are SO many different factors.. the university, the teacher, the student. Although I personally found biochem to be one of my easier prereq's, just because biochem was easier for you doesn't mean it's easier for everyone else. I think where you take the class plays a really big factor too.

PreD, I don't think everyone is getting on your case so much for what you said but rather the fact that you are so demeaning in your post. OP is reaching out for support... what pleasure do you get from putting down others? Sorry, I don't mean this as a personal attack, but it just makes me sick when I see people using these forums to discourage others or take out their anger on others just because they are anonymous. How are you trying to go into the health field to provide care for others when you can't show courtesy to a stranger?

OP, maybe you got off to a rough start, but you can still drop the course and take it in spring! If you find the material itself particularly hard, maybe you can study up some on your own this semester and be extra prepared when you take the class for real next semester. However, if dropping the course at this point would give you a "W", it might not be a good idea to drop. Do as above posters have said and try talking to the teacher, studying with friends, get a tutor-- do everything possible to make do with what you have so far and get a good grade. Good luck!

How is he going to explain a W in his transcripts in the interview !!

I was thinking... maybe he can open his mouth and start talking? But then again, I guess sign language would work too :meanie:
