Tufts Class of 2011

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
um, so when are we gonna start our very own gdamn facebook group?

We got our group... Tufts University School of Medicine Class of 2011. Original, I know... it's global and I left it open for now so join away. Also, suggestions for the group picture and anyone who wants to be an admin or officer, let me know.

Hey all,

I was accepted to Tufts a while back and wanted to say hi. I'm still waiting to hear from a couple of other schools (I'm waitlisted at some other places), so who knows where I'll end up. I'm filling out Tufts financial aid forms today though 🙂.

Welcome!

And on a seperate issue, anyone been in touch with Tufts lately or any first years have an idea when we might get more information about next year? Also, it seems like (at least from SDN) that a lot of people are on active consideration... when are they done with interview season and start putting together our class?

Hi all, just wanted to give a little hello as I might be attending the school this fall. We'll have to see what happens after March but the chances look really good right now ;-)

That song by Augustana, "Boston," is totally on my mind right now.

welcome lirrrfriend and danttt!

on another note, does anyone know if the prematriculation summer program at tufts is worth the time? i posted on the tufts 2011 facebook wall but it's not popular enought yet.. any advice would be appreciated as i'm considering this option if i can't get quality research this summer.

So, apparently, I'm under "active consideration" right now at TUSM. Anyone know my likelihood of getting into Tufts from this position? Anyone recently accepted from active consideration status? I'm dying here. Tufts is my #1 choice by leaps and bounds and I am powerless.... 🙁

Thanks

Any idea when financial aid packages will be mailed out?

During my october interview at Tufts..i wrote down that it was pass/fail and that there is no ranking. However, I wasn't sure if I misheard someone and wrote the "no ranking" part down or if indeed it is true. I was just curious if anyone knows.

To the above post...i havent received any financial aid awards yet..i would assume some of the first yr students at tufts could tell us when they heard from the school regarding financial aid.

i cant r

i think it's honors/pass/fail and i think they do rank. this is what i heard from a couple 2nd year students. i heard that some classes are just pass/fail, but i forget which ones.

Thanks for replying....I don't know why the heck I wrote down that there is no ranking and that its just pass/fail the first two yrs and High pass and low pass 3rd and 4th yr.

Howdy, first year student here (who is joining your class-- go 2011!) passing down the word of several fourth years. You're right in that most of the pre-clinical classes are H/P/F; some of the courses like pbl and masturbation 101 are just P/F (THANK GOD, although you'd think I'd have one of the two down by now. I'll leave you to figure out which one. I bet this post makes you glad that I'm going to be in YOUR class next year, doesn't it? That's right, you should consider all your options before picking any school.). There is no traditional ranking of students per se, there is "grouping," which is NOT based very heavily at all on your first and second year performance.

What do I mean by grouping, which is kind of a term I made up by myself? Well, in your fourth year when you are applying to residencies, you're going to have the dean write you a letter where you are going to be classified to give program directors an idea of where you stand against the rest of your class. You made be described as "outstanding, excellent, great, good, etc." depending on where you stand. Where you stand is based mostly on your board scores and your performance during your third year-- which depends a lot on your clinical knowledge and how well you interact with patients, how well you play with others, how motivated you are, how you deal with authority, etc.

So while I'll never have a letter written about you stating that "silas2642 was 171/172 in her class-- what a *******; really makes you re-think the concept of whether or not P should equal MD, eh Mr. Program Director?," I may receive a less than enthusiastic letter written about me that states that I am "recommended" because after all they accepted me and can't NOT recommend me unless they know I'm some sort of danger to society (which I'm not).

So I hope that that answers any questions that you may have.

To answer the previous poster's question, the white coat ceremony is in early September, and it's pretty nice. You'll be getting something about it in the mail with the date pretty soon along with everything else.

Also, for all of you eager beavers thinking about buying TEXTBOOKS-- DON'T. Textbooks are expensive and a waste of time, and there are very few that you need. If you're going to buy something useful, buy Lippincott's Biochemistry (although the biochemistry syllabus is really really good so you won't need this) for the diagrams and to use for reference, but you don't need it.

Thanks for the info, Silas! Not to sound like a gunner, but I'm going to start studying for Masturbation 101 now.

Hey,

I was just accepted....and by just, i mean i only got the phone call, not even the email/mail letter. But I am DEFINATELY going to be at Tufts next year and can't wait.

Where's everyone thinking about living?
When are we going to find out when we need to be there?!?!

I feel lost...but I'm still way up on cloud nine

can't wait to meet everyone--- if anyone is in vail, colorado, ill be here til school starts

Congrats, skibummed! Now you need to join the "Tufts University School of Medicine Class of 2011" group on facebook. As for housing, I'm on the hunt myself...headed to Boston in a few weeks to look around. Hopefully it will work out to live closer to campus rather than further...maybe south end, back bay areas...don't know much about Boston though so I'm working on figuring it all out! Plus, I'm in the MD/MBA program so I have the challenge of needing to find housing for over the summer--definitely pumped too though! Congrats again!

thanks for the infoo....do u know if there are shelf exams during rotations in 3rd yr for tufts...i was talking to a cardiologist and he was telling me how his school (rush) had shelf exams and that he thought it was useful in keeping him on his toes during rotations...i didnt even hear about shelf exams from any of the places i interviewed at

as for the shelf exam questions, you take them at the end of your rotations.

for those of you that are worried about housing or where to live, you'll be alright. tufts employs a "housing coordinator" during the summer whose job is to help all incoming first years find a place to live. they'll send you more than enough information with descriptions of all the different areas to live, price ranges, and numbers for all the utility companies.

back bay and south end are in walking distance, and the green line stop (boylston) is about a 8-10 min walk from school. the orange line stops right at nemc, so that is the most convenient.

hey i was wondering if any current tufts students could comment on the student community - with all the students living scattered throughout boston and stuff

where do you guys hang out usually? is there like a common area in tufts medical school? do people just kind of live their separate lives?

My class (2010) is a pretty social class. I mean there are of course people that do their own thing, but most people are outgoing.

During school most people have lunch and hang out in the cafe in the library, but they also spend time on the third floor (some of you may have had your interviewing session there because the 8th floor was taken) where there is a ping pong table, pool table, and hopefully a tv again.

After exams about half the class (maybe more if the exam was in anatomy, heh) can be found at Jacob Wirth's (Good German food & right near school), The Tam (local dive bar, and my favorite post-exam locale), or other places on Boylston.

Each class elects 2 social chairs that set up events throughout the year. This ranges from a pub crawl, to ice-skating on the common, to dinners in the north end, ski trips, or just picking out a bar where everyone can meet up.

Plus, a classmate of mine set up a forum for our class. So far people have organized ski trips, surfing trips, movie & pizza nights, times to visit museums, local concerts, and even a Chinatown Historical/Cultural Walking Tour with the Chinese Historical Society of Boston.

You get the idea. The point is that it's a very social class, and I can say the second years are the same way.

babaghannough: I did the prematriculation summer program( PSP). it has its pros and cons, but overall i'd recommend it. you basically spend about 2 weeks on classes you'll take during first year (biochem, immuno, physio, nutrition, histo, pbl, physical diagnosis, mol bio, and anatomy). For the most part they are taught by grad students, except for nutrition, pd, and anatomy. For anatomy you get to spend time in the lab and meet the character that is Professor El-Bermani. The teachers are really good, and it'll also prepare you for exemption exams if you want to try to place out of a class. You can place out of biochem, mol bio, and histo. I placed out of mol bio and it made the first part of the semester nice.

The total program is 6 weeks long, you get to know the people in the Office of Student Affairs (which is a good thing considering they write your deans letters when you apply for residencies), you'll become familiar with the campus and chinatown, and it'll make orientation a little less of a bore because you'll have already done your paperwork.

I'd mos def do PSP over summer research. I mean why would you do more research? You are in medical school; I'm sure your CV is good. Do research if you'll get published, but if not then I don't see why you'd subject yourself to that, unless you really really like research. It won't do anything to help you out with residency unless you continue it through your first year, into the summer before your second year, and perhaps after. Chill out, go to Europe, take a road trip, go to the beach, hang out with friends. Just relax and enjoy yourself, you'll have enough to do from August -- May. Just my 2 cents.

badgerinchina: you'll get information about orientation and stuff you need to send (e.g. immunization forms) over the summer. You'll spend the first week of orientation getting all the information you need, and then some.

Silas is right about textbooks. You won't need any until 2nd semester. They won't be worth your money if you buy them because the syllabi are usually good, and if you need to look something up they have all the textbooks on reserve in the library.

I GOT IN! I GOT IN! I GOT IN!

Sorry about the caps, but I literally just got the message just now when I checked my voice mail.

Although, I'm wait-listed at Pitt, and I think it would be a hard choice if I also get in there.

I'm curious if anyone else from my interview group got in as well - 3/15 (the last interview day) - is there anyone out there?

Erica

does anyone know what happens to people on active consideration? upon final decisions, are they placed on a waitlist?

Over in Pre-Allo, an applicant on active consideration posted that they just got the acceptance call, so hang in there and good luck.

Yes, after the final committee meeting (end of March- I think it may have already happened) all AC people will be moved over to the waitlist.

When I interviewed on March 15th, they told us that the final committee meeting was going to be the 22nd, for what it's worth.

Is anyone planning on doing the pre-matriculation program? For any current students reading this, did you do it? Do you think it's helpful/necessary??

Also, has anyone gotten information on when classes start, and when we can sign up for this program?

On the webpage for "Information for Incoming Students" it says "The TUSM Class of 2011 will register and enroll on August 22, 2007." The site also has our 2007/2008 academic calendar up now and some info on housing.

Also, the academic calendar has our White Coat ceremony scheduled for Saturday, September 8th.

Thanks so much! I've been searching everywhere for that info! (uhmm...maybe they SHOULDNT have admitted me)

Nah, their website is just crappy. There is no information on there whatsoever beyond the very basics, tons of dead links, incorrect links, etc...
Here's to hoping that they do a better job with TUSK.

Hey everyone, I remember using SDN a bunch last year, especially to meet up with some future TUSMs before we started this year. I will be done with my first year here at TUSM in a month and I don't mind answering any questions you guys have. I saw one question regarding grading, we have honors, pass, fail, usually top 18% get honors and only 1 or 2 students fail each class, so for the majority its just pass. I have not yet witnessed any competition, probably since they tell us all the time that honors do not matter until you get to your rotations (alot of recent alumni have confirmed this with me as well).

So ask away.

Also, I have to talk to my roommates, but I'll be looking for 2 new roommates this summer, I have an awesome, very affordable apt in Coolidge Corner, Brookline area. I would love to have a first year join me since it is currently hard for my roommates to understand why I am at the library everynight late this semester with anatomy and never home. Plus, I have a collection of already about a hundred medical books and no one ever uses them. If you are possibly interested let me know for more info even though nothing is definite yet.

Just PM me and it will be forwarded to my email since I don't check SDN often anymore.

I know that the housing coordinator will be starting in May. I'm just curious if anyone knows when people generally start thinking about finding a place to live and how much of this housing hunting we can do from home and/or in Boston (on weekends only) without having to come during the week.

Also at my interview, I remember someone mentioning something about coming to Tufts some time before orientation for a chance to meet up with other students looking for roommates. Am I making this up? Does anyone know when this is? Also, are there other dates or time periods that we should make sure to keep free during the summer? Sorry for all of these picky questions...I'm just trying to figure out what to do with my job during the summer. Thanks 🙂

Hey I went to a reception for admitted students in the Boston Area last weekend and I spent awhile talking to one of the people from Student Affairs about housing. It sounds like they are in the business of hiring the coordinator at the moment. Student Affairs also maintains a list of housing that current medical students will be moving out of as well. Apparently lots of landlords like having medical students as tenants because they tend to be quiet and fairly mature, so they just assume rent to the incoming classes in the future. So with that said, she told me if I wanted access to all of that information I should just call Student Affairs and they would be more than happy to help. I don't know about finding roommates though since that's not really an issue for me, but I bet they would help with that too. She was super nice!

Thanks for your help!

FYI...I received my financial aid award yesterday. I'm in NY and sent my package overnight so it arrived the day of the deadline. Boy are there a lot of loans (expected of course...but seeing the expected tution/fees/etc. on official looking paper with my name on it is kind of scary!)

Yes, after the final committee meeting (end of March- I think it may have already happened) all AC people will be moved over to the waitlist.

Are the applicants on AC supposed to receive any official notification that they have been waitlisted?

Actually to reply to my own message now that I'm thinking about it...the budget (which includes tuition and fees, room and board, books and supplies, transportation, health insurance, and personal) is $67,496. Of course, a lot of these numbers are estimated. Do people plan on having the total available money (from both loans and your own resources) to meet this $67,496 budget, or are you planning on having a slightly less expensive budget? Has anyone spoken to any current students about this?

i took the bare minimum to cover the tuition and my parents help with the room and board, but I do know if you think you might need more, your only chance to get extra money you might need is upfront so keep that in mind. You will be given a check for the excess loan money over the cost of tuition like a week into the year.

Has anyone else not received their financial aid packets yet who sent their stuff in on time (i.e. the March 16th deadline)?

Yeah I haven't received anything from them yet (and yes my application was submitted before the deadline). I emailed them yesterday and they told me I should be hearing from them shortly.

Same here. They keep sending me mailings that they are missing this, missing that. But Debbie did tell me that they will send out notice of my financial aid package next week. Good luck to y'all, I am really excited about coming to Tufts! BTW, anyone looking for roommates? I'm trying to investigate neighborhoods of Boston that would be nice to live in for the next 4 years.

were all admitted students in the boston area invited to this thing? I didn't hear about this at all.

If anyone living in the NYC area who plans on matriculating into Tufts this fall wants to get together and hit a bar or restaurant or anything, I'd love to meet some of the kids I'll be seeing a lot of really soon. With so many schools around Manhattan there has to be others besides me. 8138172092 or [email protected]

I would assume they were invited - I just got an e-mail from Tom Slavin about it. Maybe your mailing address is listed as somewhere out of state?
